Title: Interesting Statistics Regarding our Upcoming crap 8/9 Seed
Post by: Pete on March 09, 2014, 11:47:11 AM
The 8 seed has won 47% of the time against the 9 seed.

In all, 5 8/9 seeds have made the Final Four since 1985.

Regarding 8 Seeds:
The lowest seed to win the tournament is a 8 seed, which was Villanova in 1985 as an 8.  In 2011, UConn went to the Final Four as an 8 seed.  In 2000 TWO 8 seeds made the Final Four, in North Carolina and Wisconsin.

Found an article dated as of 2009 that said that since 1980, 1 seeds are 28-7 against 8 seeds.  Since 2000 1 seeds are 28-7.

Regarding 9 Seeds:
There has never been a 9 seed in the Final Four since 1985, until last year with Wichita State who went to the Final Game.  The previous best a 9 has done since 1985 is Boston Coll. in 1994, who lost in the Elite 8.

That same article dated as of 2009 said that since 1980, 1 seeds are 42-3 against 9 seeds and said that since 2000 the 1 seeds are 16-1  against the 9 (so there would be one more win since Wichita State won last year).

UConn was a 3 seed in 2011. Butler was an 8.

I want the 8/9 if they put us in the Midwest, if they don't :flush:

Yup.  Not to insult WSU but they are going to be the easiest second round opponent of anyone with a 7-10 seed.

I don't think that at all, that scenario has the highest fun quotient

Yeah I don't know how anyone would know that other than they are pretending they know that to be edgy on a message board. For all I know they would beat us by 40 but oh well it's just sports and fun.

In the past 10 years,  4 times an 8 or 9 beat a 1 seed (2 in 2004, 2011, 2013)

In the past 10 years, 10 times a 7 or 10 has beat a 2 seed.

In past 10 years, a 2 seed has lost in 1st round 3 times.... so two more times  the 7/10 went on to Sweet 16.  And last year a 15 seed went to sweet 16 for 1st time

So 4 times a 1 seed has failed to make Sweet 16 ...... and 13 times a 2 seed failed to reach the Sweet 16

It's still about having the right matchup, but the odds will say that being a 7 or 10 is better to reach the sweet 16.

It would be one of the better weekends in the history of this board, and if you don't lose a couple of IRL Shocker friends over that matchup then you're probably not doing it right.

Fun definitely.  I didn't say we would beat WSU, just that I would like our odds better than any other teams ranked in the top ten.

Interesting but WSU did not make the final game last year.

We would only be a 4-5 point dog against wsu, like bu was against us this weekend.
