Title: ITT we beat a dead horse

Will and Shane both quoted in this article as planning on transferring. Since the season ended the day we played KU in the Bram, I thought we'd crank up the offseason oscar vs. Frank discussion. Who you got, oscar's squad last year or Frank minus Will and Shane?

I still believe NuWill can do great things.

I think he will have some other great games in his career, but the 3 in OT vs KU will probably be my lasting memory of him.

"Good afternoon ma'am, I'd like to talk to you about our point guard and savior Will Spradling." Keep the faith NUWF3.

Will never got better and has been let off the hook because he is a try hard white guy.  But he scored 15 points against ku, so eff everything else.

“The first thing you better do,” Weber remembers hearing over and over, “is try to keep Will Spradling.”

Glad to hear oscar had his priorities in order.

25 shots just to play? 25 injections? 25 needles? Amazing.

Well, I'm sure a lot of tucks had his ear, so that's not really very surprising.

Tough kid.  Don't forget about getting the broken nose and then standing in there the next game taking a charge.

I have always liked Will more than a lot of peeps on this site.  He isn't the savior and none of us who like him claim that... but I am glad he stayed and glad that NuWill still has some good OldWill traits in him

Yeah, I think Bill Self (maybe other Big XII coaches were the 'over and over' part) usually gives good advice, but in this case I can think of about four other players who were priority: Rodriguez, McGruder, Gipson, and Henriquez.

It was the first thing after the other first thing.

Quote
Weber was considering taking the job, but wanted to make sure Rodney McGruder was returning for his senior season before he did. McGruder grew up in Washington DC, and Frazier (a former point guard for Weber at Illinois) grew up in nearby Baltimore. So Weber called Frazier, who was playing professional basketball in Germany at the time, to ask if he could get McGruder on the phone and find out if he was committed to K-State after the departure of Frank Martin. All while not saying anything about Weber’s interest in becoming the next coach.

Not the easiest of tasks, considering Weber’s request came at 3 in the morning (German time) and Frazier had never met McGruder. But Frazier delivered.

“My phone rang and it was Coach Weber,” Frazier said. “He said, ‘Chester, you have to call Rodney.’ All right what’s going on? ‘Well, I might get the Kansas State job and I need you to see what’s going on. He’s their best player.’”

Frazier took a moment to wake up and then called a friend associated with DC Assault, McGruder’s former AAU basketball team. He obtained McGruder’s cell phone number and had him on the phone about 30 minutes later.

McGruder was more than happy to talk.

“It wasn’t really weird,” McGruder said. “One of my good friends is friends with Chester. He said Chester was going to give me a call. I had seen him play before when he was at Illinois. I was cool with it. I was sitting on my couch watching TV. He was just asking me about my situation. I said, ‘Yeah, I’ll stick around. I love K-State.’”

Weber met with the Kansas State players prior to the news conference.

The first player he met with was Rodney McGruder. Weber wanted to make sure that the junior guard was on board. He went to a reception with boosters Saturday night. By Sunday morning he was at a church in Manhattan for mass and then went out with a real estate agent.

yup, but since they were only rumors and none of the guys were really going to leave then oops

So he made a point to keep McGruder before he took the job and Will after he took the job. He also talked about keeping Angel last year.

I think he probably just gave Mellinger a quote that fit the narrative of his story though.

the shear volume of stories written on will is just bizarre. like, mellinger was just sitting there in his apartment or whatever and then a lightbulb went off and he said "sam, you know what the world needs? it's a fifth will spradling puff piece. go make it happen."

nino isn't a senior, puff pieces are made for seniors.  or maybe you're implying it's because will is white?

i'm not implying anything other than the fact that this story has already been written seven different times by five different people including last year when will was just a junior, god forbid.

why do you think he gets a weekly article written about him?  i'm interested to hear your thoughts.

no idea. writers are lazy and will is local?

because there isn't that much in that piece that i don't feel like i've already read nine different times. maybe it's because i follow more than the average kc star subscriber though and i'm not their target audience. to me, shane would've been a more interesting piece. he's kind of an enigma. he has been here as long as will. he is currently battling an injury in a senior season filled with ups and downs and where some people expected more of him. write something about him. does he consider himself a leader? how has manhattan been to him? how is his senior season going? as expected? different? just give me something that mark jannsen hasn't already written two times about will and how he was hurt and how he was going to transfer and blah, blah, blah.

1) A Shane/Omari "Big Apple to Little Apple" story would be much more interesting to a lot of fans.

2) I'm not surprised a Kansas City paper/writer is choosing to write an article about a Kansas City kid, especially considering the typical newspaper buyer/subscriber.

Also, I couldn't make it past the second paragraph. Just awful writing about a boring subject. Bad combo.

Brad was on with BITB Friday afternoon as well, prolly on the podcast page - I did not realize Brad was 25-2 this year

Also, I am sure these Will puff pieces write themselves after the author speaks with father Sprads.  I was a little disappointed there was no mention of sleeves, seemed there was a natural spot for it with the flak jacket part.
