I feel he gave us a real lift when oscar put him on K. Anderson defensively in the second half. I think that's when the cats began to gain a little control of the game.

Granted, we got some good Jevon and some bad Jevon, but overall I thnk he was key to getting the cats back in control of the game.

I'd feel better about Jevon if he improved his FT percentage by about 300%.

Those who complain about Thomas show their low bball iq.  Yes, we get it: he can't shoot very well right now.  He does other things, though, that nobody else on the team can, like lead fast break, penetrate defense, and make dribblers very uncomfortable.  He has off the charts potential.  oscar will get his shot improved.  Lay off the kid.

If he can be just an average scorer, he can be an elite college level pg. I think he will. The only real knock on him is scoring and experience. One of those well get fixed naturally.

Why doesn't oscar just give him a red light? He's such a contributor he would be an asset even if his mindset was to never, ever look at the rim (similar to his approach to layups). Like a hyperactive, more adorable Balbay 2.0.

His quickness is nearly worthless without being able to finish at the basket.  I have never seen a good pg in my life who was anywhere near this bad offensively.

WOW. JT could literally take it to the hole every single time if he wanted to. No one can stay in front of him one on one. I suspect he's spent more time learning the offense than shooting in practice. Free throws will be improved. Have patience, brothers. Jevon will be a great one.

He took 1 shot in 16 min last night. And I'm pretty sure the shot clock was < :05 so he had to take it.

I know he's had his struggles, but there were a few times he drove in the lane and forced a pass because he absolutely did not want to shoot. I'd rather him shoot when he's wide open inside of 3' than force a difficult pass.

The funniest part of last night was after JT completely missed the front end of two free throws and the crowd was silent.  Then he hit the second one and the crowd and bench erupted like it was a game winning shot.  I think JT is aware that he needs to improve and has his team supporting his progress.

Aside from Marcus' breakaway dunk this was probably the loudest moment of the game. Standing O from several west siders.

Honestly, its almost reached the point where its so bad it has to be an anomoly. I mean, he can't be a 31% FT shooter. Or 26% on 2s. Its ridiculous.

The only real problem I had last night was when he penetrated along the right side of the lane and got ripped from behind, that's a high school level mistake that he just can't make. He gets caught in situations like that once in a while.

There is no doubt that his speed/quickness can and does impact games, its just all that he brings right now.

When you get a moment. . .I'd be curious how his statistics compare nationally and historically.  I remember hearing that JT had a lot of games in high school where he was scoring upwards of 20 points.  I'm confident his shooting will improve.  I'm just curious if he comes out firing next year, will it be a historic improvement?  Put that on a t-shirt.

I had a moment and he is currently K-State's worst shooter in the last 11 years (among those who played enough to make it to kenpom's stats).

Still, I don't think he's shot nearly enough to rule out this season's shooting as an anomaly. Remember Jamar's free throw shooting early in his career?

What's concerning is our coaches and/or Jevon probably DON'T think it's an anomaly as evidenced by Jevon forcing passes the last couple of games when he should have taken the wide open layup himself. He should be encouraged to shoot, at least at the rim, or he shouldn't be playing at all.

His TO Rate's better than both Jevon and Nigel (while admittedly dribbling across half court less), and he kind of plays as a "combo". I'm far more concerned with getting another offensive threat on the floor than Foster splitting time @PG. Are you like worried about his ability to dribble while calling out a play or something?

He is a "combo guard" who should never play more than 5 mpg at PG because his strength is playing off of the ball.

Well that's dumb and limiting. He's A LOT like Pullen, and I think he could be used in a really similar way. I'd say he has a lot of strengths, one of which is pick and roll: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1938110-meet-kansas-states-marcus-foster-ncaa-basketballs-most-underrated-freshman

I mean it would be great if Jevon wasn't the worst shooter in KSU history, but for now I'd rather give Marcus 15 minutes at PG, 15 at SG than have the worst shooter in KSU history on the floor.

Foster as PG is interesting, I wonder if oscar is considering it. oscar does seem like a "true PG" type of guy.

Agree with sys. The only way Foster even stands a shot at the NBA is if he plays PG. He'd have to practice all offseason to even make that a remote possibility. But you still have Nigel and Jevon coming in, so only half his time would be spent there.

I've heard oscar isn't planning on playing Foster and Edwards at the same time, though. He likes the idea of always having one of them in the game at SG, so the other team can't take a break at any point during the game. So I doubt we see Foster at PG.

Well, do we have his highschool stats?

The idea of JT is nice.  But, seeing as how close most of our Conference road games have been, we simply can't afford to have him on the floor in the last 5-10 mins of the game.  Yes, he penetrates, initiates contact, draws fouls.  He's a good passer.  But, F me, "blowing by" the defender doesn't mean crap when he's not converting 3/4 of his layups and he's missing 7/10 freethrows.

Maybe it's an anomoly, but I can't remember the last time I saw a player hit backboard wide left on a FT.  I mean, that's f'n unconscionable.  The little cat halftime performers shoot better than that and most of them are 8 years old.

I think Foster and Edwards will be on the court together and could be on the court together a lot.   Its not that hard to have them both start, and have rotation plan where 1 is always on the court.

I could see Foster playing a little bit at PG next year.  Especially if Jevon/Nigel show next year, that them combining for 40 minutes isn't the best thing for the team .   Tay was the backup PG last year when Angel rested.... and Tay was not a PG.

Edwards probably isn't all that good.

I would think that Edwards will be about like this year omari.

No

Edwards got those numbers using double the possessions.

edwards has shot enough threes that it's pretty easy to conclude he's not a good shooter.  with johnson, and especially thomas, the data are less numerous, and thus less convincing.

Well, I'm guessing the number you have is more than 45 and less than 164, but I was hoping you'd be more specific so I can reasonably make conclusions about other players and compare.

I like a lot of the pieces of Jevon's game, but he drives me crazy at the same time. With all the hype he had coming in, you think we would have heard about his woeful FT shooting.

southie shot 44% last year and this year is back under 30%.  i'll believe edwards has changed when i see it (over an extended period of time).

for the level of certainty you are hinting at, i'd say well over 164.  but you can be a lot more certain of 164 than of 46, and a lot more certain of 46 than of 11.

edwards had a decent ft% though.  it's probable that he's a better than 27% shooter if he takes a reasonable number of shots for his skill level.

Sure, but how much more certain of 164 can you be than 46? I mean, Southwell shot 39% on 146 attempts before this season. I think there's still a lot of volatility even at 164 attempts (and Shane supports this anecdotally).

And I was just going to post about his FT%! :D

Surprised no one has made a Gottlieb comparison yet, at least in regards to FT%. Doug was 45% for his career. He also only averaged only 5.2 ppg game, but his assist numbers were off the charts good.

yeah, i agree.  you just have to use the data that are available and try to discount your certainty appropriately.  you could calculate how much more certain you should be of 164 attempts than 46 if you wanted to (no link, use google).

I totally understand the argument he doesn't know the offense too well yet, and was mainly playing off energy, because of his lack of practice. But what I don't get is what on earth was he doing by himself? You would imagine probably practicing his shots and free throws. Can we get some insidery info from the student manager as to what his shooting percentage was when he was rebounding for him?

Foster is a shooting guard, plain and simple.  Thomas is going to start next year at point, and everybody here is going to love him. Nigel will be a damn good back-up.   Edwards will get 22 minutes a game next year:  7 at the two and 15 at the three.

Big 12 solo champs next year.

Kane scores a great deal of points by being physically imposing over the other point guards in the conference, he pulls other guards into the post and plays well with his back to the basket. Edwards won't have the luxury of mismatching the guys guarding him.

I brought Doug up in the other JT thread and I think it could be a very spot on comparision.  Gottlieb was pretty bad as Soph and actually got worse as his career went on.

His senior year they went 27-7 (12-4) got a 3 seed and lost in the elite 8 to a Florida team that was national runner up with a PG that wouldn't shoot and was comically bad at the foul line.  It worked because they an NBA wing in Mason and conscienceless gunner in Adkins.  I see us with a somewhat similar make up the next 2 years with Foster and Edwards.

This is really cool. The blog post where Cannon introduced 3 Point Score (http://kenpom.com/blog/index.php/weblog/entry/introducing_3_point_score) as an alternative to just using 3PT% was particularly interesting and made some sense.

I plugged in this year's K-State players to his formula and it looks like this:
Name   3PT Score
Marcus Foster   1.041
Will Spradling   1.025
Shane Southwell   1.006
Westicles   1.005
Jack Karapetyan   1.000
Nino Williams   1.000
Thomas Gipson   1.000
D.J. Johnson   0.999
Nigel Johnson   0.996
Omari Lawrence   0.996
Jevon Thomas   0.995
Vulture   0.985
Shawn Meyer   0.972
Ryan Schultz   0.924

Drew Cannon wrote those while he was at Duke in school and he had an internship with Dave Telep at age 15. After he graduated, he was hired by Stevens at Butler and then went with him to the Celtics.

1)That doesn't explain how he improved his 3pt shooting by nearly 10%.
2)So Kane couldn't have used his size and strength the last 2 seasons when he was playing far worse competiton

Kane's game has improved a lot by playing in Hoiberg's system.  There is no denying that.   I don't know if Edwards will be a lot better under oscar's system... but to say he won't for sure is just being unpractical.

yes - those are the only two variables being assessed, so it's impossible for it to consider anything else.  i don't see a ton of value in the statistic either.  aside from just providing a single metric that combines volume and accuracy, i think most of what value it has is that the value is centered on 1 - so you can easily conceptualize the value of a player's contribution in shooting threes as positive or negative to an average team's success.
