Kansas State University Team Captures National Collegiate Beef Quiz Bowl Championship
A team of Kansas State University students went undefeated in three rounds of competition to win the National Collegiate Beef Quiz Bowl Championship Feb. 6 in Nashville, Tenn. The competition was held in conjunction with the National Cattlemen's Beef Association annual convention.
The competition, which consisted of 25 beef industry-related questions, is designed to provide opportunity for students to attend the convention to interact with beef industry personnel and to build future beef industry leaders, said Karol Fike, K-State faculty member and team advisor.
The K-State team beat Penn State in the championship round. Other teams included Oklahoma State University and Montana State University.
To qualify for the national competition, K-State beat 15 other teams in the Midwestern Section of the American Society of Animal Science Academic Quadrathlon competition last March. They then went on to earn Reserve National Champion Academic Quadrathlon honors at the competition in conjunction with the national ASAS meetings in Indianapolis last July.
The students who comprised the K-State team at the national contest, their major and hometowns, included: Chase Miller, senior in animal sciences and industry, Harrisonburg, Va.; Kiah Gourley, senior in animal sciences and industry, Philomath, Ore.; Analena Simmons, 2013 graduate in feed science and management and minor in animal sciences and industry, Barnard, Kan.; Angela Vesco, 2013 graduate in animal sciences and industry, Winnemucca, Nev.; and Tyler Schultz, senior in animal sciences and industry, Haviland, Kan.
For the 10th straight year, the K-State team was sponsored by Fourth and Pomeroy Associates, Inc. of Clay Center, Kan. Joe Ebert, Fourth and Pomeroy's vice president and general manager is a 1971 K-State graduate in animal sciences and industry, and Jim Brown, company president is a 1959 graduate in feed science and management.
