Title: Would Gus Johnson and Bill Walton be a good pairing?
Post by: sonofdaxjones on January 31, 2014, 11:54:29 AM
For the record, I think Bill Walton is great, and frankly I think you have to be a hyper-pretentious humorless dickhead if you can at least appreciate the guy.   He's a very smart guy, he was one of the greatest college basketball players ever, he would have been one of the greatest pro players ever had his feet not crapped out on him.   He's his own dude, none of the "it's really great to be here but your coach isn't as good as Coach K and this isn't Cameron Indoor" disingenuous hyperbole like you get from Vitale.

Just to recap:  One of the greatest basketball players ever, multiple national titles, multiple NBA titles, Dead Head, world traveler, own dude, very smart, opinionated.

Does he pair well with our guy Gus?

Yes or No?

Probably my two favorite college basketball announcers, but I don't think there is enough airtime for them to both be at their best. One would have to give way to the other. It's a 2+2=3 type of thing.

Gus - "Thomas up the floor, dishes to Foster for the 3.  He hits! Ha-ha, the lead is up to 12. Timeout.
Bill - "Beautiful transition right there.  Thomas used his speed to draw the 2 defenders, then the nice kick out to Foster for the  open 3.
Gus - "The Wildcats have started the 2nd half with a purpose. A pair of 3s from Southwell and Foster, and they got this crowd fired up."
Bill ' " I think the freezing weather outside has stirred up all these students.   They jumped around the entire timeout, shaking their fists in the air in a wild frenzy."

I watched an Arizona-Colorado game called by Bill Walton and someone else and the other dude kept ragging on Bill like crazy. Like it was extremely rude and Bill Walton just kept rambling on. I think Bill was drunk and his partner was like wtf man?

Walton is awesome on the color mic.  Nice mix of Cosell, Paul Maguire, and Dennis Miller.

In retrospect Gus and Bill probably wouldn't be a good fit.  Bill needs a more pedestrian/dry humor setup guy.

Bill Walton is basically the worst of jerry Seinfeld and Harry carey, with a touch of drunk dementia uncle. All he does is bitch and moan about frivolous crap, start stories and forget to finish them and berate that poor guy broadcasting with him every time he makes a commemt.  He's bizarro John Madden. How dare you try and drag wonderful, exuberant, exciting Gus Johnson into that dark world.

Tougher question:  Would Nigel Johnson and Bill Walker be a good pairing?
