There is so much amazingly bad in this thing, but winning still feels good. I'll always take ugly wins; reminiscent of that home game vs Xavier and another late season Big 12 tilt vs Missouri as ugly wins that come to mind.
Gipson was the man and Foster hit a big shot when needed. Shane also with the hot potato put back. And Will was unspectacular... but steady, which we needed tonight.
-
I was surprised at the rebounding. That was pleasant.
-
ftrating like jycats.
-
That was fun. A strange sensation. Go cats.
-
25% 3pt
42% 2pt
56% FT --- missed 12 of last 20 FTs :(
12 asst/15 TO
Hard to win games doing that but somehow we got an ugly win.... but a win never the less
Gip (6-7fg 6 reb) Westicles (double double) and us hitting ORs were few bright spots

Was just thinking this. A lot of teams are going to be doing this. Frank's 'cocks are going to be breaking records.
Thus far this season there are 45 (I could be off by 1 or 2 here) teams better than the national leader from last season.
-
The game was super fun to be at tho guys! :excited:
-
It's hard not to think about what would have happened if a couple more of those Marshall 3s go in, but the heck with it tonight. I like our young kids. The crowd sounded good. We won. Just gonna enjoy it.

He's such a rambler.

"At halftime we’re up two and I said, ‘Guys, it’s a heck of a half and all you have to do is a tie score or win by two and we’re winning this game’. It’s ironic that’s what it came down to at the end.” - oscar Weber
I don't think oscar knows what ironic means :dunno:

Young kids have looked a lot better than I expected. Hopefully Jevon is as good as I hope he will be. Throw in the two transfers and some sort of decent incoming class and we may actually be decent next year.

I think it's worse than that. "Tie score" or "win by two"? HOW ABOUT WE WIN BY ONE? Wouldn't one point be enough for the win, Brucie?

I'm just excited that oscar lets the players just coast on a decent first half. No point in stepping on their throats or blowing the game open, just take it easy, win by a couple pts, and enjoy some post game chicken nuggets.

First time seeing the chicken nuggets filter in action. :D

Didn't watch any of the game. But woof.
-
I was all TSC'ing last night, but that was the worst basketball game I've seen since Greg McDermott was at Iowa State. Might even be the all-time worst. My eyes bled.
-
I really enjoy the thread title!
I really dislike the stats!

ftrating like jycats.
no, it was nothing like that.. this was worse than watching 5 on 5 at the rec..
-
Grinders are grinders. The teams last night were NIT level probably, but I've seen plenty of other similar games. People generally overreact to these types of games. JMHO.

we just aren't very good at very basic basketball traits.. like dribbling, passing and catching the ball.

agreed. every team plays games like this over the course of the season. We may play more than most teams, but meh about style of play.

I agree, the TOs (especially Foster's) are concerning, but I really believe experience will bring improvement with that.

Best win we've had so far this season. Not that Ole Miss is good, but they are probably the second best team we've played. Good to see Gip take charges. Hopefully it will encourage him to flop a lot and go for charges. It's a crap style of basketball but with no size inside, might be his best chance.

It seemed a lot like Bread's slow it down and fluke into a win strategy. I mean, oscar was constantly telling our guards to wait when in bounding the ball rather than attacking before the press was fully set up and Wyatt said on the post game that OM shot 16% from three with Henderson going like 2 for 13 himself. So we slowed it down and they couldn't hit a shot. We constantly had the ball with 7 or 8 seconds left on the shot clock before it even looked like we knew what we were going to try to do with it.
Bread 1- KenPom 0, I guess.
Our offense seemed confused. No one moved. Same with our press break. Someone would pick up their dribble, the D would double down on eating someone's face off, and the rest of the team would hang out where they were and watch to see what was going to happen. Was frustrating.
Also, I have said this before, but if Michael off of The Office was a basketball coach, he would be oscar.

PG play for us last night was abysmal, Will was the point guard and didn't want the ball. There is no way Jevon doesn't take the point guard position by the end of the year. Better point guard play will also help Foster, he will get better opportunities and won't have to press so much leading to turnovers.

Will Foster ever be able to drive against decent competition?
-
Will Foster ever be able to drive against decent competition?
Maybe if he learns to shield the ball. Every one of his drives was blocked out to the effing moon.
-

It's hard to drive against zones.
-
Concerns are the same; shooting, turnovers, rebounding. Rebounding was good last night. Defense was really solid too.

Playing offense against a zone seems to be a pretty big weakness for this team

Gotta make shots. Gotta penetrate. We kinda suck at both so far.

We don't have anybody on the team that can drive and kick against a zone efficiently yet. But Jevon tho

:pix_martin: 0+0=win, 0+2=win by four
We were SOOO spoiled when we had a math teacher for our head coach.
*ps - given the thread title, I came here expecting to see at least one Miss from Ole Miss :dunno:

To me hitting shots/FTs is the key.
Its correct to say we aren't a great penetrating team, but its better than it appeared and I thought the offense did a good job creating opportunities for decent shots. We did a great job working the ball and getting entries to Gip. We also got plenty of open looks for jump shots, but we only hit 1-6 from 3 in the 3nd and 4-16 for the game.
As for penetration, Westicles and Foster were very good in the 2nd half of getting inside the defense, they just usually didn't finish and drew fouls shooting 14 FTs between them. The problem was they only hit 6 of those 14 attempts. TOs went from 29% in the first half to 20% in the 2nd, so we did get better as the game went along.

Wasn't "just have to win by one" a common RP thing?

the game flow chart is interesting. i remember thinking it was the most boring game i could remember that was so close (like neither team even had a single medium-sized lead!) against another major conference team. pretty odd.
