TITLETOWN - A Decade Long Celebration Of The Greatest Achievement In College Athletics History => Kansas State Basketball is hard => Topic started by: wabash909 on November 22, 2013, 12:38:44 AM

Having been a huge K-State basketball fan my entire life, I have always believed and been optimistic, even during some pretty lean years. My point is that when the team is struggling, the need for fan support in the arena is even more important. When our athletes that wear our team colors with pride come out of the tunnel, the last thing we need to do is show them a lack of confidence and support, because there are going to be some games when it gets close, when they need a boost and when our crowd can and does make a difference.
This is one poor shooting team, that is small in size and has a rough schedule ahead. No one is denying that, infact, Coach Weber had been saying that all summer.
It's unfortunate that many fans have become so caught up with immediate gratification, and have seemed to have forgotten that we just won our first conference title since 1977.
A lot of people want to blame Frank for leaving the cupboard bare and oscar for not bringing in some great players right away, but whose fault is it that you, the fairweather fan, have turned your back on purple pride?
It's not John Currie's fault, it's not Tom Asbury or Dana Altman or Jim Wooldridge's fault either, nope, just you.
The freshman on this team have promise, the upper classmen are disappointing. (but are playing just like expected so far, unfortunately) Gipson was supposed to be able to possibly be a stop-gap for us this year and then got injured and is not 100%. Sometimes the moons just don't line up.
I have season tickets, had them now for 25 years. I am not going to miss any games. I will be cheering for the Cats just like always. I will have moments of happiness, surprise, disappointment and puzzlement. I choose this team to support. If I wanted to have a guaranteed winner, and rarely be disappointed as a basketball fan, I would cheer for the other guys down the road. I don't care to ever do that. If you are too caught up in immediate gratification to ride out this up and down year with pride, then scoot your way further down the Kaw, because we don't really need your types here.
How great would it be if this team, which is not supposed to be very good, got better and surprised some people...That's what makes cheering for college athletics fun. Maybe they will or maybe they won't, either way, I am all in. Go Cats.

I will say it again, now is not the time for Squawk types here and those that are too caught up in immediate gratification to ride out this up and down year with pride.

Panjandrum, it's unfortunate that many fans have become so caught up with immediate gratification. What was said needed to be said and I'll take it as a compliment.

I don't think the issue is that everyone has to have immediate gratification. Those that support K-State, particularly basketball, have done so as the underdog. The most vocal critics, the ones refusing to go to games, support the program by not going to games. Packing the house for a subpar team will support the "one more year" philosophy. If these were instant gratification, fairweather fans then they wouldn't care. They would just silently stop going. They do care and they know that their most effective way to send a message is with their money.
That said, if I was still in the area, I would go to games. I can't quit K-State basketball. But I certainly don't blame the people who won't financially support losing decisions.
-
You know what I hate? Pissing contests about who's a real KSU fan.
And by the way, skipping a wedding, quite possibly the most excruciatingly boring cultural tradition we have, for a Cats football game tells me nothing about your KSU fandom. Unless it was your own.
-
For me its also not just about supporting K-State though. Its also about not accepting loosing. Ill give Weber this season to prove himself and earn another season, but if we go below .500 at home this year he has to go.
If we keep making excuses for poor results and accept them there is no way we will ever be relevant except for a random season here or there. Same is true if we fire coaches a season after winning a conference title, so the sword is double edged here.
-
This reminds me of a long thread on a certain message board that covers the school in which I recently received my degree which called out fans for not selling out a particular venue despite the team being incredibly effing awful.
-
This star crossed k-state fan bullshit is going to ruin our program again. You know what happened when we sacked up and went for it, we got Hugs and a crap load of recurits. Overnight we were back on the map. This just wait and be happy bullshit is the reason why we have crap programs, its the reason why we've had crap facilities, its the reason why we've had crap fundraising. We need to shake things up. We can't rest of the supposed moral high ground of small timey k-state fan attitudes. eff people who don't want to win and win right now.
-
I'm just beginning to accept the fact that as KState fans we just don't deserve good things.

We've got Reboulet to thank for that one. I think he may have some others... :impatient:

If it helps, I left the game after the pick 6 and had plenty of time to go the wedding, so I'm self-revoking my real fan status for leaving the game early.

Apathy and a lack of fan enthusiasm got us 15 years of Woolly and Tan Tom. Your strategy is doomed dimwit. Not doing something gets nothing accomplished

What would FSD do?
-
I go because I like hoops. Don't live in MHK, drive an hour to games and have a small kid. Skipping would be easy. Just because I go doesn't mean I like oscar, it means I like K-State hoops. I like Nino, Gip, Shane, DJamer; I think the new guys have explosiveness...I suffered through some crummy Woolyball, when there was no hope. The new recruits at least give me that.
Go Cats :ksu:

People showing they will spend money on a good product the past few years. The AD is smart enough to look at that and know if they put a good product out, people will go. Not going is doing a lot more than continuing to pay for a product, no matter how shitty.

Normally, I'd agree. But this AD has made it clear that they'll use attendance figures (real or otherwise) to justify what they've done. There could be 12K fOOD'rs sitting on their hands and/or booing the crap out of oscar, and the next morning's email will be about another notch in a sellout streak belt.
I'm not going to assist their talking point.
-
Their talking point doesn't really matter. Soon you won't find our games anywhere on any decent channel and when you do tune into KState.tv, you will see a quiet bram full of echos and completely devoid of atmosphere. The only ppl fooled at that point are the football only ppl that never really cared.
-
I certainly don't blame people for going as I would if I was there. The key thing is to find some other way to voice displeasure to the AD.
-

We had plenty of good players with Wooly, we didn't have good teams. We're about to see the same.

I am glad you pointed that out - "I am just glad it's better than Wooly" is not only unacceptable, it is not even true
-
I still contend Wooldridge deserved another year. Great coach, good man, just had one too many snake bites, unfortunately.
-
no
-
I don't really get how wanting to have continued success is immediate gratification. It's not like we are expecting to go from a below .500 team to the Final Four. We have gone to the NCAA tourney five out of the last six years. For most Cat bball fans, that is six years of success, so obviously we must have been doing something right. At this point in the season it looks like we are not even an NIT team. I think it is completely acceptable as a "real" fan to assume the program is going to make an effort to step forward every year. It is just disappointing to see that we are not, and it's OK to get pissed off because of it.
-
The very argument of instant gratification is put on it's head thanks to confy champy last yr.
How do you reconcile your stance as a dumbass tuck if you argue the former but actually understand the latter occured?
-
Getting our face beat in with a sledgehammer by KU twice and then getting knocked out of the NCAAs by Northeastern Czechoslovakia and then Angel leaving all kinda put some tarnish on that confy. Maybe a ray of hope would help rally the troops.

Like winning games against crap teams you are favored against? That would be a good start. I wouldn't mind it.
