So obviously I have always been a shitty poster, but haven't been able to follow basketball nearly as close this year compared to previous years. Why hasn't Thomas played in the first 2 games? He has slimmed down and I had heard that he had gained some speed and a bit of explosion. Is he injured, or is oscar just keeping him out for some reason?

he wasn't practicing last Monday or the Thursday before the first exhibition game, so you're 100% wrong.

Very overrated by a large portion of our fanbase.

Played like he was stoned today

We have zero inside game. Guys don't even look down there. Bruces system seems to be all about bigs rebounding and shutting the eff up. Surprised we got that bolden kid and would be surprise that any future true big would want to play in this system. Exactly why JO was left to rot last year.

I don't know what game you watched but they tried to look down there plenty and pretty much didn't like what they saw.
The previous game they looked inside to Johnson a ton.
-
With our current roster I think we should look inside very rarely, to be honest.

The caution toward Gipson is warranted and I understand it, but a few things about Gip this year. There were questions about how much (if any) Gip would benefit from losing weight and becoming leaner and I think its clear that this is paying off. The next step will be showing in a big game, especially against a team with really good bigs. Some things to think about.
Gip has improved on his scoring. Last year he finished scoring at a rate of 26.6 PTs per 100 for the season and 29.6 in Big 12 play, which was actually the best on the team (slightly better than Rod's 29.1). His shooting% is much improved, up from 52% to 59% and FT% is up from 62% to 75%, though FT rate is slightly down to 46.5% from 50.2%.
He was also a very good rebounder last year and still is. This year he's at 6.1 oboards per 100 and 9.8 dboards. His oboards are slightly down (last year 7.9 for the season, 6.1 in Big 12), but dboards is a little better (last year 9.0 for the season, 8.4 in Big 12). Blocks is about the same; 1.5 this year, 1.2 last year.
However, the biggest change is minutes played and fouling. This year his fouls are down to 5.9 per 100 (from 8.0 season, 10.1 Big 12 only) and he has only 2 games with 4 fouls or more (last year he had 9). As a result of fewer fouls and better condition, he's now at 63% of the available minutes played, has 5 games with over 30 minutes, and 7 with at least 26. Last year he had 1 game of 30 minutes for the season and only 8 of at least 26. As a result he only played 47% of the available minutes for the season last year.
Gip's conditioning along with smarter play has simply kept him on the floor more and because he already had proven to be an efficient scorer/rebounder when on the floor, he's becoming an impact big for K-State. We'll see if he can maintain that and stay on the floor against a very good group of KU bigs, but I think its likely he won't be as disappointing as many of you presume he'll be.

^ All logical.
But our performances in AFH defy all logic. What happens to our teams in that vortex is entirely psychological. We're not talented enough to win there the vast majority of years. granted. Not many teams are. But the manner in which our ass beatings are dispensed is totally unexplainable by statistics and numbers. I would just like to see a good game. competitive. close. doubt it will happen.

Sorry MiR, I could have sworn it was you calling us all idiots in chat earlier this year for thinking that Thomas Gipson was an above average college forward. My apologies.

Very true.
I don't expect us to win there and I don't expect the game to particularly close, but not a complete blow out either.

I've spent the last three years battling the "he can't even dunk" morons. I also didn't think he needed to lose weight to be effective, however in retrospect I was wrong about that because I didn't anticipate that he would be the only big man on this roster and now I think he is going to collapse from overuse.
In the last decade the only bigs I've been critical of is Diaz and that old dude from Hutch CC who was fat, bald, and had two bad knees.
-
Here's the story. Crowd is at fever pitch (strange b/c we're not even rivals). refs are warm and loose. KU is confident, smiling, prepared to spill blood for its fans. KSU is nervous, anxious. Freshmen are in awe, glance toward seniors, see blank stares and empty eyes; the seniors have been here before, just want to get it over with. oscar draws some crap on the white board, his terrible voice drowned out by the crowd. Players bite fingernails, ignore oscar, shift attention from the U2 intro video to the crowd.
Thunderstruck blares.
Opening tip controlled by KU, Wiggins hits a 3, crowd litterally begins tearing AFH apart. Will turns it over. Wiggins hits another 3. KSU is already dead. KSU offense is stagnant. No movement, no ball rotation, players standing, all 5 are scared. Illegal screen. Then we start standing and watching on defense - the fouls begin. KU builds double digit lead by the 17:50 mark.
Down 15, cut it to 9 by half. everybody knows this game is already over. Fans got their 20 minutes of blood lust. 2nd half will be fine. We'll play decent. Hit some meaningless shots. KU won't have the same energy. We'll lose by 10-15.
-

Also I'm on my 4th whiskey by the time Gipson picks up his 3rd foul at the 16 minute mark of the first half.

You forgot the part where our two decent post players will be on the bench by the under 8 TV timeout with foul trouble. At least two of the fouls being questionable to say the least.
In the second half the foul disparity will even out, but it will be too late. Seems to happen every year.
-
I feel like there could be a Grantland article written out of our annual AFH faceplants along the lines of "Squinky" from that Oklahoma State writer.
-
I'm still on that train. Good big men are still going to kill him. Wait until Saturday.
It seems like he has been more willing and effective with the face up 8 footer this year and that gives me a small piece of hope for Saturday.
-
Down by 10-15 in the first 5-7 min.
Rally to get really close by half.
Bad side of 10-2 run to start second half.
Claw back to with in 5-7 for majority of second half.
5 min left KU goes on 15-3 run.
We lose easily.
Pretty similar story, over and over again.
