Title: is oscar hurting k-state 2025?
Post by: j rake on November 15, 2013, 08:49:50 PM
i could care less about the ksu hoops program. i didn't attend k-state for the sports. i went because of its great academic reputation and because a degree could help me achieve anything i wanted in life. like most proud k-state alums, i've been following kirk schulz's visionary k-state 2025 plan with great interest. a degree from a top 50 public research institution such as k-state would enhance my profile and take me to a level i never thought possible. (you too, probably).

but the negative publicity surrounding oscar weber seems like it could hurt our chances of gaining membership into this exclusive club. i've heard all the arguments for getting rid of him, but all these arguments focus on things like X's and O's, recruiting, and championships.

can we PLEASE make an academic hire? i have a short list if necessary.

Here's the thing about oscar:

You get all the awkwardness of an academic achiever, but none of the performance.

rake is right.  oscar weber is a terrible ambassador for a Top 20 campus (per respected news outlets).

my top choice is coach kevin nickelberry. he has academic integrity, is media savvy, and is also a family man. for those that care about sports, he's also a top 25 recruiter. he's done some very nice things at howard university and listens to NPR for fun.

j rake, can you tell us what you REALLY think of oscar?

it's hard for me to be objective because i feel so strongly about the academics. it's been clear since Day 1 that he's a terrible fit given that he's previously coached at non top 50 public research institutions.

Understood.

But, if you had to drop that level down to say 100 or so, what would be your "take" on this?

bone.

Bone: One .500 league record season, over .500 overall at WSU, NIT Semis, CBI Finals in 4 years.
Robinson: CBI Champs, CBI Semis, CBI first round in 5 years.

Tough to decide.

wsu had a hall of famer before bone, and shoulda kept his kid.  robinson is the president's brother in law.  it's an easy decision.

no, but get this: that day i told you i was going to TEP, i ended up winning a raffle that entitled me to three hours all-you-can-drink, me and my friends (if i had any  :frown:), in our own private area. pretty sweet.

i was also automatically entered into a drawing for a 70-inch TV!  :Woot:

If ISU can raise almost $900 million for the school under Chizik and McDermott, anything can happen.

yes, but from an academic standpoint, ISU is superior to KSU by almost every measure.

I've enjoyed Good Times in the Little Apple. I like you people.

I do not recommend any phrasing similar to "top 50 public research institutions" in a country with 50 states. There are much more flattering ways of expressing yourselves.

there are 629 public universities in the US. i'm not sure all of them define themselves as a "research institution," but any school that isn't conducting research can't be taken seriously anyway as they are not contributing to the greater societal good. if kansas state became a top 50 school, it would rank them in the top 7 percent of all US institutions.

i would venture a guess that you are not in the top 7 percent in the US in any single thing you do. you are probably not a top 7 percent cook; you are probably not a top 7 percent employee; you are probably not a top 7 percent citizen. you are just an ordinary regular person who is adequate or average at everything you do.

i feel horrible for any k-stater who has a child that's 5 years old or younger.

My College is ranked #8 in the country... With 125 other schools offering the same degree I guess that puts me in the top 6.4%?  :dunno:

I hope this means I get to choose the new coach! :crossfingers:
