Title: Drain guys
Post by: Lefty on November 15, 2013, 10:54:05 AM
Sewer smell in upstairs shower drain. My google research has led me towards checking the drain trap, but i have no idea what the hell a drain trap is. Do upstairs showers have drain traps? Help if you can.

The smell actually hurts my lungs like amonia gas

you need to get a section of plastic tubing 1/2" to 3/4" inside diameter. put one end of the tubing down the pipe until it stops, which should be at the trap.

Put the other end of tube into your mouth and suck as hard as possible until the drain is clear.

Really? There's no drainage problem. Just a smell. I don't think it's clogged in the slightest. The internets said it has to do with the sink trap. I'm trying to figure out where the hell an upstairs sink trap is located.

All drains have traps.  However, if you are smelling something that smells like Ammonia, someone dumped something like ammonia in your drain.  If it was sewer gas, it would smell like something dead.

  Call a plumber.

every drain in your house will have one.

if its something you rarely use, the water in the trap could dry up and let sewer gas into your house.

if you puked a bunch of pringles/doritos in there without running the water it could still just be sitting there stinking up your house.

if its a shower you use alot there is probably a three foot long stinking wookie of womans hair which you should pull out

This is the correct answer.  The water acts as a barrier for sewer gasses coming back up the line.  As noted, if the drain isn't used, you can have a horrid smell develop.  Add some water to the trap and you'll probably be fine.

Do you have a drain (bathroom sink, shower, or toilet) that never gets used? The water in the trap can evaporate and allow the sewer smell to come through. Make certain you flush every toilet and run water through every drain in your house.

is this shower rarely used?   A shower used regularly should never dry out.

Does any of the other water or drains in the home smell like ammonia, or just the shower drain?
Title: Re: Drain guys
Post by: Mikeyis4dcats on November 15, 2013, 12:00:30 PM
also, if you have any floor drains or showers and sinks that get used rarely, put a couple of ounces of mineral oil in the drain.   It will sit on top opf the water and reduce the evaporation.   Don't use cooking oil, it goes rancid.

The smell is so bad it seems like just the often used shower drain, but i'll have to investigate further. There's a shower, bath and sink all in the upstairs bath. All used often.

So what i'm gathering, is it's probably not the trap. It's probably just a huge mass of female shedding of hair.

the drain pipe for the washer drain often doesnt have a trap. your fix here is to seal around the washer hose that sits into the pipe. I wrapped an old sock around the washer drain thing then crammed it in the pipe. worked like a charm.

Get a metal coat hanger, take off the drain cover and get to work.  Hold your breath or wear a mask, because it's going to smell awful.

Had this exact same issue once on a shower that was not used frequently.  All you need to do is pour some water down the drain.  You need to fill the trap back up with water so it keeps the sewer smell from coming out.
