We heard Frank talk this week about midmajors and how they get overlooked guys who are talented and then stay for 3 or 4 years and how that's how they're having success. He compared that to our success this year due to Denis and Frank.
What does this portend for our recruiting strategy going forward? What would the ideal strategy be?
KU got its national championship when its "one-and-done" players had to stick around longer than they initially thought.
As Frank is building his system, what happens if he brings in a Mike type player now? Will that disrupt his approach? Is he better off with a ceiling of Wally type players, with talent and size but who are more easily benched that first year as they are made to buy-in to the system, and building the core of the program around guys like Jake--guys who might otherwise be stars at mid-majors but who we are able to get as a major-conference school?
It seems that "buy-in" will be critical to Frank's system going forward. Don't want an implosion like OU.

I don't see an OU implosion with frank. players know what they're getting into with him.
-
I'm not too worried about next year. The year after though..Well, we really need to land some good guards.

Right. Which makes me wonder if we'll be in on any "one-and-dones" going forward.
-
LMAO, like Frank could land one and dones if he tried.

Exactly. If a guy is going 1 n done, he doesn't want to be yelled at for a year. He wants to be Calipari'd (paid and coddled)

I think we're going to see an attempt for find more Pullens and mix in Wally/McGruder types. It looks to me like Frank is doing his best to turn McGruder into the next Pullen, granted they are different players. I think we'll continue to see a focus on a) long, athletic guards mixed with b) long athletic posts with c) a bruiser/big body mixed.

Pullen is playing above the potential he showed as a recruit. Pullen type recruits are not difficult to find. Most majors and mid majors have them. Still, outside of Pullen and Clemente, we seem to have a hard time with landing servicable guards.

Didn't we have like, this exact conversation a week ago (right down to scoffing michcat remarks on ability to land elite NBA-talent)?
Also, hope Frank goes the Self route and keeps his face out there by sitting in as an analyst. Would be amazing.
