The buzz over this pic got some buds and I talking about skill position players who are white, and how (overwhelmingly white) fanbases go absolutely bonkers for them. Nebraska's love for Rex Burkhead was mentioned.
We also spent a lot of time laughing about words or phrases that announcers use to describe white RBs, QBs, and WRs that are almost never attached to black players who play the same position. So, ITT, let's brainstorm all those names and phrases.
I'll start:
-Crafty
-Scrappy
-Field general
-Extremely coachable
-Coach's kid
Go 'Cats.
Also, let's keep it out of the Dome. If HerrSonntag, Bookie Pimp, and K-S-U-Wildcats could please stay out of this thread, that would be great.
-
Phenom :dunno:
-
sneaky athletic.
-
Tuff kid fought his way out of the subburbs just to get here. "And aren't we greatfull for it, Herb; this kid is a bruiser."
-
my favorite is: throwback
-
that's a pretty amazing photo
-
"This young man has seen his fill of trouble, but he's turned into a fine fullback for this team. Wouldn't you say Mayday"
-
Great motor
-
Based on that pic I'm going with stud muffin
-
yeah when did channing tatum star in a Rudy re-make?
-
yeah when did channing tatum star in a Rudy re-make?
That guy is better looking than channing tatum.
-
"Always in the right spot"
-
"not the fastest but..."
-
He does the little things
-
Has a high FBIQ. Makes his teammates better. Gym rat. A coach on the field.
-
a yes sir, no sir kind of kid
cerebral
gritty
-
Not into flash and bling.
-
good route runner
trusty hands
deceptively quick
-
A player that doesn't have the "party" fun side of college as a top priority.
-
makes the most of his limited natural ability
-
he makes the most out of his athletic ability
-
owl :shakesfist:
-
yeah when did channing tatum star in a Rudy re-make?
That guy is better looking than channing tatum.
Seriously. He's playing ball without a helmet and has a sly, model-esque "almost" smile on his face. You would swear that if this pic was taken 1/2 a second later, he'd be winking at some cheerleader on the sidelines.
-
owl :shakesfist:
-
works hardest
greatest work ethic

And pointing his finger like a mock gun while flashing his pearly whites.
-
You can tell This kid has a real grasp on the playbook
-
Just for fun, google "Jake waters" and "speed" or "fast." All the code words are there: sneaky, deceptive, etc.
Once again, the coach prefers the more athletic player who gets by on his physical gifts rather than the scrappy play of the sneaky fast gym rat who's like another coach on the field and does things the right way #hustle #sacrifice #studentofthegame #runsfortouchdownsnoonecantstophim
After he came back in after taking a shot to the ribs on a play he elevated on to try and block a pass I was surprised. I figured he had broken a few ribs. Great motor which makes him a disruptive player.
Don't forget moxie and deceptive speed.
-
blue collar player
old school
-
I've got a few words for you. How about motor? And deceptive (in reference to speed) and gym rat field general moxie work ethic? Also, small town and Kansas and overlooked earned his chance plays hurt savvy. That's my favorite player every year.
-
great hustle
-
that's a pretty amazing photo
Yeah, that guy looks like someone shopped his senior pic on to his FB body. Not just calm AF, but slightly smiling. No sign of straining. Crazy.
-
Is it gay that I'm now gay after viewing that picture?

Let the gayness flow and we'll all have a gay ole time.
-
Well. I guess I'll go try to be cooler after seeing that pic.
-
gunslinger
overachiever
-
Brings his lunch pail to work.
First one in, last one out.
A coach's dream.
Heady.
Reminds you of [insert another white player].
-
Reminds you of Tyler Hansbrough.
-
Wes Welker
-
Wes Welker
That's funny, because Jordy Nelson is the spitting image of a taller, stronger Wes Welker.
-
:peek:
"crucial blocker"
-
Wes Welker

Squawks need to stick to basketball. That may be the worst player comp of all time. :opcat:
-
There's no quit in this young man!
-
Wes Welker
I scanned through the entire first page and was almost beside myself that no one had yet mentioned "He's a real Wes Welker type." Honestly can't believe it got to page two.
As for the original photo: dude's a total stud boss. Look at his hunky beefcake expression even as his helmet has been ripped off and he's trying to evade tacklers. Probably luked but don't care. No idea if he's any good at football and don't really give two shits but he is a t0tal dreamboat.

-
This is a young man who does things the right way.
-
...knows how to read a zone defense...
-
..has a lot of the intangibles that just don't show up on the box score.
-
Good player but a better person.
-
Wes Welker

I feel like some of us are just naming sports cliches now.
-
Pretty :opcat: in here guys.

-
Dnr thread but locker room leader
-
Glue guy
-
efficient
-
Field general.
Obviously another sports cliche, but outside of Russell Wilson - who the media has deemed "safely black" (and also kind of sucks) -
I defy you to find another black QB referred to as a "field general" or "like having a second coach on the field."
McNabb and Steve McNair were often talked about like that

they've gotta say something, and "black, but not fast" doesn't play well on tv broadcasts.
from today, "broad shoulders and short-necked" was a phrase i hadn't heard before.
-
"Over-achiever"
-
Does Dan Patrick read this board?
He was basically stealing every thought from this thread on his show this afternoon.
-
possession receiver
No.
Justin Blackmon and Dez Bryant are possession receivers.
Does not apply
-
HEY! i want to call out, what does it mean to keep something out of the dome and why amd i the godamn poster child of doing so!?!?!?!
unless this is doing so.....
-
Never referred to as:
Dynamic
Athletic
Gifted
Talented
-
"Hubert... He's not the fastest kid, but he works hard, has determination, and has a motor that doesn't quit."
-
I don't understand why announcers won't give Mueller credit for having actual talent. He's not just a kid with "a motor". rough ridin' ridiculous and stupid.
-
Oh, you mean "Snyder's favorite player"?
-
Oh, you mean "Snyder's favorite player"?
Yeah, one of the top three players on the team. The guy responsible for making the d-line an actual strength. That guy.
