Title: How many years before West Virginia is ready to compete in Big 12?
Post by: Dugout DickStone on October 22, 2013, 03:04:23 PM
Obviously, they have Big East athletes, BE coaching, BE fans and got just crushed like a bug in the meat grinder that is the Big 12.  My question is, how long will it take that program to get up to a Big 12 level?  I am thinking it will take an entire recruiting cycle to get the inferior Big East athletes out and get Big 12 caliber athletes in.  Maybe a big longer as the recruiting needs to be built up to a Big 12 level over time.

They are going to have a hard time recruiting Big 12 caliber athletes as long as they are the only east coast team in our conference. We really should have added Louisville instead of TCU. WVU and Louisville both would have been stomped last season, but they would both be pretty good in the near future.

When we eventually go to more than ten teams and there are a couple more bottom feeders to pad your record with. The recruiting thing is a good point but they have both the south and the pittsburgh/philly/eastern cities to recruit as well so that could be taken with a grain of salt.

Athletes aside, I just don't think they have the wit and innovation necessary to compete from a coaching perspective.  I doubt they ever will.

Hopefully we'll kick them out of the Big 12 and replace them with Louisville long before we ever have to find out.

100 years minimum.

This. Teams have had an easier time transitioning from FCS to FBS than WV will going from BE to B12.

when global warming turns the eastern part of their state into beach they should be able to overcome their backwoods'ness enough to get athletes.

Strange little side-note, I met Jonathan Silverman while working as the doorman at a bar in New Orleans. He's actually an amazinly nice guy.

Knowing where Virginia is, why isn't it called Northwest Virginia?  Somebody get these guys a compass.

Oliver Luck had been exposed as a know nothing fraud.  Can't pick football coaches, or basketball coaches.

The answer to the OP question is "Never, as long as Oliver is around."

Andrew's dad sounds like a perfect candidate for the new college football playoff selection committee.

The real question is "if" they ever can truly compete. Maybe in womens rowing or soccer or something....seems like they are good at something like that.

I feel like someone should have warned these yokels what they were getting into.

he offered them a good right arm
to help them save the family farm
for ergo he was damn near good as rain

then came the time for them to choose
an offer they could not refuse
with easy-outs and capital gain

no one has a suspicious feelin
you really couldn't call it stealin'
he did it with a style most would admire
but he had picked 'em off like a bird on a wire

he had open fire on a bird on a wire
a nudge a wink and they'd be gettin higher
he whipped out his fountain pen
while the tears were gettin' drier
and then he picked 'em off like a bird on a wire

there ain't a kid with a BB gun
or an alley cat with room to run
who could bring 'em down like they was out for hire
yeah, he could pick 'em off like a bird on a wire
