Title: Some perspective
Post by: Havs on March 27, 2010, 06:11:35 PM
I understand this hurts for Wildcat Nation right now, but this might put losing in the ELITE 8 into perspective on where your program has come...

There is a lot of respect up here in Cyclone Country for what Frank Martin and this team has accomplished. Little was expected from an unproven AAU coach who inherited a job after his boss bolted after one year in Manhattan. Being successful in the midwest, let alone in the shadow of KU, may be one of the hardest things to do in sports, and K-State did that this year. Take pride in your Elite Wildcats, and congratulations on a great season.

No.  You can't get this kind of opportunity and not take advantage of it.  You're 5 minutes away from a Final Four.

The thing that sucks about getting old is you realize how rarely you get good opportunities to do something really special.  And when you don't take advantage of them, it's really, really, really depressing.

When you suck ass at basketball for the better part of 20 years you aren't going to get many shots.  But is you are at least a top 25 program you will get more opportunities, it isn't that hard to comprehend.

If I asked you whether KSU hoops was either one of two scenarios

A: On the way up with a solid foundation and Multiple talented players returning, as well as coming in the future.  Not to mention a hungry young coach who in just his third year reached the regional finals.

B:  A one hit wonder full of irreplacable NBA type talent.  Without a real identity or a sustainable system.

I'm optimistic for the future, especially the next year or two.  Hopefully recruiting goes well over the next year or two.  There is perhaps one coach in America I'd rather have right now.

You're right.  The last 20 years does warp our perspective.  I hope in the next 5 years I can look back at tonight as a taste of things to come, rather than a missed opportunity.

Just curious...do you have a real team in mind for example "B," or was it just an alternative?

no real team but I was kind of thinking about our Beaz&Bill squad or UK this year.

Seriously, I think we are going to be good for a long time.  I think we can basically be Okie St. 2.0.  They were good for a long time then sucked for 25 years.  Then Eddie Sutton came in and did a fine job.

Oklahoma State  (Big 8 Conference/Big 12 Conference) (1990–2006)
1990–1991*    Oklahoma State    24–8    9–4    1st    NCAA Sweet Sixteen
1991–1992    Oklahoma State    28–8    8–6    2nd    NCAA Sweet Sixteen
1992–1993    Oklahoma State    20–9    8–6    2nd    NCAA Second Round
1993–1994    Oklahoma State    24–10    10–4    2nd    NCAA Second Round
1994–1995    Oklahoma State    27–10    10–4    1st    NCAA Final Four
1995–1996    Oklahoma State    17–10    7–7            4th

I'd take that in a heartbeat...maybe with 2 more E8 appearances.  But 2 FF in 15 years?  Absolutely.
