Title: Tip the cable guy? (Immediate answer needed)
Post by: j rake on September 30, 2013, 04:48:20 PM
Cable guy is here. Moving into new place. He has to set up cable and Internet and has a bunch of tools on the ground. Looks like a 20-minute job.

Do I tip him? If so, how much. Also, I live in Vegas, which has its own set of tipping rules/expectations, which is why I'm a little uncertain. Thanks!

I never have. Maybe you should, though? I really don't know how well they are paid.

I have a $10 and a ton of $20s in my wallet, so it looks like a $10 minimum tip if I'm directed to go that route.

They are paid "decent" (more than traditional service people) according to the morons at Yahoo! Answers.

Nuts Kicked deserves a tip for replying more than the cable guy does for doing his job.

Did you ask him to run cable in a pain in the ass way, like through walls or whatever?  If not, don't tip.

It depends. If you feel the cable guy (or gal, as it may be) has given you good service in a timely fashion, addressing your concerns, and generally leaving you satisfied, by all means, give them a tip.

Cable installers aren't necessarily always well-paid, when I started installing for my local cable company, I was paid $9.00/hr. Pay rates vary from company to company, with higher wages usually only coming after working for the company for several years. And BTW, that $35 service fee mentioned earlier doesn't go to the tech, it goes into the company's coffers.

The short answer is, tip the cable guy like you would any other service employee. If you are happy with the results, slip him a few bucks. If not, don't. You would be suprised at how often subscribers demand that the tech perform extra work (installing extra outlets, hooking up the surround sound and showing the customer how to use it because they don't know how, etc.), which cuts into the tech's timetable, and then just shoo them out the door. For me, it wasn't so much about getting a extra couple bucks as it was knowing that the subscriber appreciated the hard work I was doing, which would end up making my whole day better.

*edit* If those two guys are installing multiple outlets, a good rule of thumb is to give 'em each enough to buy themselves lunch. Or order lunch for them.

Go tip him before he is done, tell him that is for accidentally including all of the premium channels for free

By tip, do you mean bribe to get free channels?

Pretty sure this isn't even possible at the cable installer level anymore = no tip.

Jeff rake, I will be in Vegas Saturday but probably not in time to place money on the early NU game. If they are still 10 point favs place a medium bet on IL to cover for me. Tia. Also take money line IL yourself as a reward for placing my bet (you don't get reimbursed for your ML bet)

That would be like tipping the parking meter attendant after he writes you a ticket.

Did he deserve it? If so, tip him. I would not have tipped him less than $10 if he deserved it.
