"Jerry O'Neal, Continental Siding"
No "Hello, my name is," or "I am with" or "I work for" just their rough ridin' name and then a business name. I do NOT like that kind of thing. Seems like a slime ball kind of thing to do.
I always want to say "No I'm not, I'm Pete" when they say that crap to me.
This might deserve a separate thread, but I also hate the clerk dude who acts like the inventory is actually HIS. "I don't have any of those in stock, let me see what I do have." "I have some of these, and I have some of those..." Hey pal, you get paid hourly....you don't own crap.
-
"Jerry O'Neal, Continental Siding"...
While handing you a business card stuck between his index and middle fingers.
Slime ball move.

You cool with the "we" pronoun?

How do you introduce yourself?
Hello, I'm Pete.

You know what I don't like along these lines? People who answer their phone using only their name.

Oh I know! That is terrible.
I always want to say "WRONG! GUESS AGAIN!"

i dont understand why people associate who they are with what they do for money.
-
how about folks that drop the "actually, it is Doctor so and so" in non professional situations

I've never met anyone doing that. I would probably end the relationship.

Dude that's a commercial. Not a big deal.
Relax man.
But yeah in real life , eff that crap.

After "who you chose to surround yourself with" how you earn your way through this world is possibly one of any persons most defining characteristics.

It shouldn't be.

I introduce mrs. dave as dr. dave all the time in all situations and she gets really mad.

This is a pretty boss move. She pretends to get really mad, but inside, she really likes it.

any dr that introduces themselves as dr _____ is a humongous dork and should be laughed at. the only time this would be ok was if their first name was actually doctor. like their parents named them doctor and he's been called doctor his entire life. like, "doctor, it's time to come inside and eat dinner and don't forget, before bed you have some third grade homework you have to do."
-
also, i know a couple that received a wedding invitation and it was addressed to mr and mrs _______. the guy is a doctor and the wife made a really hilarious remark to the effect that the couple getting married would not be getting as nice of a present from them because of this mixup and that they would be getting a "mr type of present" and not a "dr type of present". oh my god i said to myself. what a clown.

my roommate from the dorms way back in the day, ended up going to chiropractic school after KSU and just graduated... he changed his facebook name (actually made a new account, since unsurprisingly they must not let you change your name) to DrPaul XXXXXX and sent me a new friend request... his original account is still on my friends list so I don't feel bad for not accepting the request but srsly... that has to rank up there as one of the douschiest moves I've ever seen on FB? And for a not even a real doctorate degree

Cool story Doc Daris. Thoughts on Dwight Gooden?

my advice would be accept the request and them ask him why he changed his name from paul to dr paul and how much paperwork it took to fill etc in order to make it legal.

Unless they showed up to perform a surgery or something, nobody gives a crap.

i'd say he's good since it's a nickname that was made up by other people. same with dr J.

that's why it's so funny when people do it though. it must matter to them or they think it matters in some way as to make them introduce themselves by something other than their first name. i mean, nobody every says hi i'm mr _______ or mrs _______. you just introduce yourself by using your name. hi, i'm rick or hi i'm rick daris. also, who the eff would introduce themselves followed up by who they work for in a non work setting? that's even weirder.

I never know whether to say my full name or just my first name

in the hospitality industry we have people that correct the Dr all the time. They will get really upset if you don't so I make all my staff go with it. You usually get one screw up though before you're being a dick. When I get a chance, I drop a Mr or Mrs on them and my staff is all  , then I say "you always get one, and I used it so you better call them dr"
-

I have an old roommate that does the same thing. He always brags about being a doctor. My response is "Oh you're a doctor, can you write prescriptions? No, then you're not a doctor." He get's all mad which just makes me laugh even harder.
-
I never know whether to say my full name or just my first name
i think if i was single w/ no kids, i'd probably just go first name. with kids though and being married i add the last name in because chances are the person i'm meeting probably knows one of them.
-
i hang out w/ a lot of doctors in social situations and have never had one correct me or try to big time me like that.
-

same. the only time it ever happened to me was a stats prof. at K-State. wasn't even a faculty member. just teaching some night stats class via the extension office.

i'm around a decent amount of doctors as well and the only time i can think of was my aforementioned "i guess they don't want a dr present" story. also, that was several years ago but the story still gets brought up and laughed at because of how deadly serious the person who said it was.

I'm cool with medical Docs introducing themselves as "Doc Smith" or whatever. I mean, it is nice to know there is a doctor in the house if anything goes wrong. If you are like a Doc of history or some crap, then ya, woof guy, no thanks. Worst part is it is those Docs of stuff like history who are most adamant about being called Doc. I get it though, you spend your whole life studying the Monks and Cluny or some crap and you don't really get much clout out of it. That title is like a medal that says, "this means something." Even though it really just means "I know a lot about history, geography or something.

equally stupid regardless of type imo. lol at any dipshit medical doctor asking for me to call them Dr. unless we are in their office and they are currently doctoring me.
-
i introduce myself with just my first name because my last name is hard to say. if im just meeting them, they dont need to know my last name.
also, you shouldnt call someone dr unless theyre working or they ask to be called that.
sorry about this problem in your life, pete. hope it works out!
-
the next time i'm with someone that pete doesn't know i'm going to tell them to introduce themselves this way just to see what reaction pete has.

I know a KSU history prof (specialized in medieval saints) who didn't go around calling himself "doctor" but did have a smartass daughter. They were on a flight together once when a passsenger got sick and an announcement was made asking if there was a doctor on the plane. Smartass daughter says: "Go tell them about the saints, dad."

Hi. My name is Rob but you can call me El Gaupo. :D

I don't like people who introduce themselves as "Mr." either.

we decided a few posts ago that this isn't a real problem in anyone's real life. just internet bbs'n among the bbs bros.

I know like three people who's nicknames are Doc. They all live and work within like 20 min of each other.
-
The only time I've ever had a doctor do something like this was while visiting my dr after my freshman year. He asked what I wanted to do and I told him I wanted to go into physical therapy. He ranted for like 5 minutes about how "I guess they'll let anyone be called a doctor these days".
-
you can all refer to me as BSBA or BBA y-l_a from now on. thank you
or dr. bbs
-
they call me Doctor Crunch at the gym.

Your doctor sounds like an insecure loser.
-
I forget people's names like a second after I"m introduced. Maybe less. Maybe it's not even forgetting because I never took it in to begin with. So I guess anything funky that would make me remember their name would be good.
Maybe give your name and @. Hi, I'm Trim, @TrimGoEMAW. @ me if you're gonna talk bad about me.

I insist on being called the maestro. I didn't spend 10 years at the Sorbonne to be called mister

your doctor is a dumbass. pt school is pretty tough. hard job too.

i hate (really hate, not an exaggeration) the use of dr. with a first name. i'm fine with it with a surname, and for most of my life have almost always addressed anyone older than me by dr./mr. surname unless instructed not to.
the dr. first thing name is a juxtaposition, as well as insulting. first names are familiar, honorifics are formal and indicators of status. you can't use both at the same time unless you're a complete bad person.

That settles it, you are in the top 5 posters dobber wants to meet. I don't know who the other four are, so the rest of you can all just relax. Looking forward to meeting you Dr. sys!

it really is pretty stupid that a lot of healthcare jobs/degrees are moving to a doctoring level profession, but in the case of physical therapists and some other comparables, i understand it. they want true autonomy and direct access to patients without the patient needing a physician referral and they weren't going to get there with the designator being a masters.
also have never thought about it but i agree with sys. dr and then first name is just the worst. like, hey you should call me doctor but to liven it up and show you how fun i am, you can also call me by my first name. just horrible.

my brother bought me a plane ticket one time as Dr. Mikeyis4dcats. When we checked in the lady at the counter was all "Welcome Dr. Mikeyis4dcats" and very nice and stuff, and we got bumped to 1st. So there's that.
I was totally confused....and he was laughing his ass off.

One time I selected "Dr" as the title when I was booking my flight, it showed up on my ticket as "Dr. Ben Ji". Security guy asks my name and I say "Ben Ji" and he is all like, "Is that it?" and I was all like..."Um, yeah?" Then he asked if I was a Dr and that if I put that on my ticket I have to say my name as "Dr. Ben Ji".
Whatever, I got on the flight.
