Title: Stan Weber Recap (810 Radio border patrol)
Post by: steve dave on September 27, 2013, 01:35:29 PM
-Comments from Snyder and players about team unity....concerned?  Anytime a team like K-State (used to winning) is 2-2, there will be frustration and anger.  Is it unusual....no.  This goes on all the time.  Even when winning.  It's normal with a football team because of so many players/so many personalities.  I'm concerned about the team, but not because of chemistry.

-Two QB's.....still think it will work?  Stan:  I still don't know of any true 2 QB system that has truly worked.  (dismissed leak/tebow and some of the others because they were used in well defined instances).

-So far this season, the ball just hasn't bounced the right way.  NDSU was right there for the winning.....TX game goes K-State way if we get that early turnover on kick return......so this system may in fact be just fine.  If we are 4-0 or 3-1, people would be talking about how Snyder has once again done something innovative in the game (like the Wildcat).

-What would Stan do?  Play Waters 90% of time and use Sam's in only QB run game....near goal line, 3rd and 3 and shorter, run out the clock, etc.  I wouldn't make it any more complicated than that.  Waters can throw too well and passing game too effective not to play him.  But, that's just me and there are numerous options Bill can use with them.

No, they probably just agree that whatever grill LHC Bill Snyder decides to put in his back yard must be the best grill.

What do people see in the passing game that make them think it has been successful? The interceptions?  The sacks? The lack of touchdowns?  The losing games to mediocre teams?

steve dave said he was busy in a meeting this morning so i filled in and took some notes on Stan's appearance on TBP this morning. enjoy!

-Surprised Baylor's easy win?  Yes, a little.....but, Baylor is good and there's no bigger difference between a team at home vs. on the road than Baylor.  Most impressive thing is that Baylor had major injuries they had to overcome.

-TT now vs. couple weeks ago?  Competition level.  I don't think they've dropped off greatly, just schedule ramped up.  Look at Dana at WVU......playing in Big 12 can humble a new coach quickly.

-Does think Kingsbury is a good coach....can fight through adversity.

(slight interruption.....)

-Playing at TT......little more mean spirited maybe, but more about opposing teams probably don't respect TT like they do some of the other Texas teams.

-Thinks it's good K-State going in as underdog.....for above reason of respect.

-Basketball.  What are you thinking?  Like athleticism, but youth will cause ups and downs.  But, oscar is very skills oriented.  He can coach kids up and it'll show in his "refined" basketball system.  Big weakness....not a lot of height.  Surprisingly, he thinks offense will look smoother tonight than it did at this time last year.

-Prediction (for BB):  Are they a tourney team?  Yes.  Might be bubble, though.  Place in Big 12?  5th.

-FB Prediction?  K-State 37, TT 34.

Here is a list of teams that the "ranked team" has defeated and their Massey ranking:

SMU (108)
SFA (249)
TCU (68)
Texas State (122)
kansas (121)
Iowa State (95)
West Virginia (60)

Tceh was "ranked"  because they'd played one of the worst schedules in the country.  Even after playing #'s 25 (OU) and 15 (oSu), their SOS is still at 58.

We are currently #31 with the 16th toughest schedule to date.  If ever there's been two teams going in opposite directions with schedules doing the same, this might be the best example.

TOs will be a big deal in this game, and for once this actually favors the Cats.

Tech has lost at least 3 TOS in 6 of their 9 games. Granted, the Cats aren't great and still have lost at least 1 in every game. Tech's ability to gain them has gone down the last few, while K-State has forced at least 1 in the last 4 games and forced 6 in the last 2 games.

I think the Cats get to +2 in TOs, get a big return in special teams, and win 38-30.

filling in for steve dave again...

-Besides 2003, what's standout OU/KSU game?  Stan:  has to be last year.  Showed CFB that Snyder was definitely back.

-Others:  Going to OU and winning with Chad May.  Beating them five in a row in 90's.

-Nate:  Also, Stanton appeared as ST players last year, right?  Yes.....due to injury, he was in on every kickoff and most punt team.  Has been on ST units every since.  Was very proud moment for me.  I wasn't expected him to play last year at OU, so I suddenly became very nervous.  Thanks LHC Bill Snyder for making my 6.0', 175 pound son a Big 12 caliber player....don't know how he does it.

-Discussion turns to walk on's.....how does he do it?  Bill looks for something a little different with players.  Bill wants superior athletes, but more so, looks at what's on inside.  Bill knows how much physical change will occur from 18-22.  If you find a kid with tons of energy and heart, he can develop the player.  Bill believes you can be great, whoever you are....and he preaches it to you and treats the walk-on from little river, ks the same as a 5*.  Bill gives every kid equal chance.  Has the least amount of "hazing" as any locker room you'll ever see.  He demands the "studs" treat the walk-ons equally as well.

-Turns to OU and suspensions.  How does losing Williams change things:  Does change things because he's so explosive and fast.  The QB they'll play tomorrow has the same qualities, though.  They can make huge plays...not through air, but on ground.  You have to remember, Williams was not their starter.  Also, Stan thinks KSU would of been better off with Bell starting.

-A lot of it is which OU team shows up.  Stan thinks KSU will be what they are....consistent.  If the explosive OU team shows up, it'll be tough.  If the sleepwalking OU team shows up, K-State will be fine.

-OU runs the fast pace offense, this is where they'll miss Zimmerman the most.  Coaches don't have time to make the adjustments.  Will miss Ty's leadership a lot in this regard.  Second thing they'll miss is Ty's physicality.  Backup played well last week, just not as physical.

-Prediction:  KSU will win 30-27.

Early morning after Thanksgiving....doubt many posters are up, I decided to take the reigns for border patrol this week. We have some input from Stan and Kirby:

STAN

-Chiefs have 1/3 chance to beat Denver.

-OU game.  How about Lockett?  Said very early in year that he had chance to be greatest KSU receiver ever....and obviously still believes it.  He did all this against OU.....not some gimmie.  He's incredible, fast, cannot be guarded.  OU has a pro at corner....couldn't contain him.

-How much Lockett tomorrow?  Depends.  K-State isn't one dimensional.  If K-State can run it tomorrow, that'll be the emphasis.  Will pound it and throw occasionally against KU.  Really, K-State indifferent with what they want to do.

-Yards per play....K-State better than last year, and 2nd best in Big 12.

-Worried about let down?  No, don't have to worry.  K-State is focused.  If you want to be nervous, you could say since it's Thanksgiving week, K-State is out of its normal routine........and K-State is built on be consistent.  Also, Ty not playing.  Also, OU is physical....so how dinged up are they?  But, KSU will be focused.

-Only 22 Kansas kids on KU......60 some for KSU.  So, it's Kansas kids against the university of kansas.

-Prediction?  I start with nervousness and end with excitement.  Look at last year, KU had 264 yards in FIRST half.  Simms is a great running back.  Hard to say it's going to be a blowout.  But, you turn to excitement.  K-State separated last year and became blowout.  Tomorrow, thinks K-State will eventually separate.  Will be hard for KU to get to 20.  Prediction 40-17 K-State.

-News about Gunhart......opinion, is this Tim's or Charlie's choice?  Definitely think it was Grunhart's decision.  It's a grind.  He has 4 kids in HS next year.  Tim did it the right way......he did early to give Wies time to formulate a plan.  In terms of recruiting, well liked in KC area......but can plug some other staff into KC area.  Transition for recruiting will be smooth.

-Kid from Grandview (OL) very close to TG.  Said he was still focused on KU.....but may keep his options open.  The other OL (center) was looking forward to working with the former center TG.  Tim told both kids that they need to honor their commitment to KU.

-Reports that Rice OC might be coming on board?  That would be a great hire.  Unbelievable job at Rice.  I'm friends with ??? (sounded like John Riggs).......so I can't say a whole lot.  But, would be a GREAT hire.....runs dual threat system that works in college.

-After shutout at ISU, what's focus of team?  After loss, Charlie let them have it.  From what I've heard, they responded a little sluggish.  But, went supper hard Wednesday and has gotten better, but took a while to put the ISU loss behind them.

-Is running game enough to stay competitive with KSU?  That will have to be the plan.  Have to try and get Cozart and Simms going after watching KSU rush D against OU.  But, KSU has good coaches and they'll make adjustments.

-Guarding Lockett?  Probably give some safety help.....but KU does a lot of isolated man coverage.

-Score?  KU will hang in there, but KSU will pull away and win 31-21.

let's just hope ksu rushes it well the first 5 times it tries to run.  otherwise, the coaches will give up on it and turn to bomb city.

True, but KU doesn't have the players to commit 7-8 to the box like OU did.

That doesn't mean they won't do it.  You'd think that by now those coaches would be humbled, but I doubt it.

Grunhardt stepping down is hilarious...I remember being really worried about him killing us in recruiting in the greater KC area, but we got a haul this year with the Blue Springs guys.

KU doesn't have the the offensive or defensive lines to clown suit Snyder.... and KU's WR's are a liability. Laughably awful.

Anyone worrying about this game is total pud.

If their wr's  are a joke, we better blitz and stack like crazy.  Our run d needs  a confidence boost after the last two games.
