What jobs are perceived to be awesome, but suck, for whatever reason? Too high of expectations, no recruiting base, etc. Put your list here and then we'll have a discussion to see who's list is the best one.
Mine:
1. Nebraska
2. Virginia Tech (when it opens it will seem like a great job, but not really)
3. Tennessee
4. Florida St
5. Texas A&M
-
1. Alabama
2. Oregon
3. LSU
4. Texas
5. Florida
-
In no order:
Boise State
Nebraska
Tennessee
Notre Dame
Auburn
-
1. Iowa
2. Nebraska
3. Auburn
4. Oregon
5. Notre Dame
-
1. Miami
2. Nebraska
3. Clemson
4. Georgia Tech
5. Iowa
-
Texas
Notre Dame
Nebraska
Arkansas
Georgia
-
I agree with most of the schools listed on here, but any most overrated list without Mizzou is incomplete.
-
Almost went with Mizzou, but went with Georgia because they underachieve so incredibly.
-
Nebraska job doesn't seem so overrated to me.
You can be a huge bad person that it just mostly OK at your job, and tell the fans the eff off, and the fans and the administration both show you more support than they did before you told them to eff off.
Sounds like a good gig.
-

I think Georgia is a GREAT job; they've just underachieved in filling it, though Richt seemed like a good hire at the time and he's had his share of success. Saban would do at UGA exactly what he is doing at Bama.
-
At Georgia underachieving is relative to the conference they're in.
No one has underachieved on the level that MU has, not even close.

Illinois and Minnesota
eh, a little unfair. Mizzou's football stadium is considerably bigger than Illinois' and is the only program in the state. Illinois has 3 FBS programs in the state (two of which combined for 20+ wins last year). Also, Illinois went to a BCS bowl in 2007.

Missouri should have went to a BCS bowl in 2007.

Notre Dame
Air Force
Army
Navy
BYU
-
any Big 10 job outside of tOSU
Notre Dame
UTenn
Washington
Oregon (on this board)

Notre Dame
Air Force
Army
Navy
BYU
I think all mine are based on expectations and/or bullshit you would have to put up with.

Mizzou blows, we all see that, but is there a perception by some that its a good gig? I don't think its an overrated job, because I don't think anyone actually believes its that good to begin with

It may not be overrated outside of the state, but they seem to think pretty highly of themselves if they are paying Gary Pinkel $2.7M per year. That's like paying $5K to put a stereo system in a '99 Ford Taurus...

That's like pouring Dom Pérignon on a pile of dog crap.
-
Everybody that put Illinois is a confirmed rough ridin' dumbass. Everyone thinks it's a crap job. They woefully underachieve, but that just serves to further lower the job rating.

its been a rough day, T. :'bye cruel world:
-
yeah also what bread said. no one is rating the Illinois job high to begin with. that's why tim beckman is the current head coach.
-
Kansas, even through everyone knows it's crap, it's really much shittier than that.
Notre Dame. mostly a graveyard these days.
Washington, sucked for two decades
Nebraska, see above
Any academic school in a BCS conference (Vandy, Stanford, NW, Duke). Sometimes they're plucky, but mostly they're sucky.
-
1. Oregon
2. Nebraska
3. Michigan
4. Clemson
5. The rest of the ACC schools.
-
The most overrated job in America is Nebraska, and it's not even close. Fight among yourselves about 2-whatever, but Nebraska stands alone at the top.
-
Tennessee comes to mind just because they've been pretty mediocre since they won it all
-

I put it number 1.

My list freaking rules.

It's a really good, well thought out list, Cartier. You should be really proud of your list.
-

Agreed. I would probably put Oregon at number 2 based on how many people tried to put then in their top 5 in that other thread.
Also, if you pick Notre Dame, you're a complete dumbass.
-
And just about any "sleeping giant" job is overrated. Minnesota and mizzou get this a lot. Has Illinois ever gotten this label?
-

I don't know that Illinois belongs on the list, although I put them on mine, but it seems that Illinois has this bigtime aura that is completely undeserved. Maybe it was just Zook and Self/Weber that have influenced my view, but it seems like everybody acts like they should be good at sports when they clearly aren't/shouldn't. There are three basketball programs in the area that completely trump Illinois, and basically every team in football, but somehow they stay relevant. I just don't get it.

They get it in basketball any time they start to get good. I've never heard it in football and it makes sense. Illinois has great in-state basketball recruits. Illinois high school football is crap. There's no reason Illinois should be good at football. They should however be decent all things considered, but they typically are not at all.

It's the only bcs state school in the fifth most populous state is why.

Yeah I don't think I can be outdone here.

USC? Expand your thoughts on that one
I've been to two games at USC. One when they played K-State and one against ASU. USC's campus/stadium is located in a shithole of an area. We parked our car next to a washing machine sitting an an alley. I did not feel comfortable walking half a mile in the daylight to the stadium. The fans are the worst, they only show up if they're winning championships otherwise the stadium is half empty. You also have to deal with the recent sanctions against USC. No more rough ridin' up there or bending the rules. Finally consider, you're living in LA, which in itself is a great city (much like Dallas) but your 3 million dollar salary goes about half as far as it would in any SEC, Big 12, and most ACC and Big 10 cities.
Overrated.

They probably give the coach his (or her!) own parking spot, if he has to drive there at all.

You think Notre Dame shouldn't be on this list? They don't have a local recruiting base, they have a significant portion of the fan base that wants to do it the right way and they really have nothing to play once they have 2 losses. On top of that, it is located in very rednecky part of the country.

But when USC and Miami are good they have as high a ceiling as any job. I mean, Will Ferrel on the sideline in the Coliseum and Uncle Luke in Landshark or whatever it is.

There is actually a very large population for them to draw from . Their biggest problem (by far) is their dogshit city.

Also, not sure if you knew this, but they have their own exclusive contract to broadcast all of their games on over-the-air national television. ALL OF THEM. So you have a few people that think they should win the right way, but it is easily outweighed by the massive exposure they receive.

Rivals in the SEC, other powerhouse programs in a conference that should be very tough, but has just been down for about 10 years now, recruiting against an SEC school in your state, . . .
It's a great job. Nebraska is a great job. This is a thread for jobs that just aren't quite as great as people think.

Well, Clemson consistently doesn't live up to expectations, so the the players must not be that good and therefore the recruiting base isn't that good. Also, you are more likely to sprain an ankle running down that hill than winning a national title with that school.
