Title: Join the Fizz Buzz craze
Post by: CHONGS on September 09, 2013, 01:04:25 PM
Hey everybody!  I have a grand new game to play.

You get everybody around a table and someone is elected the first person to start (called the "Falconer").  The Falconer starts by calling out the first natural number (old school definition here) "ONE" (1).  He or she then point to another person around  the table and this pointed at person yells out the next natural number "TWO" (2).  They in turn point at another who you would think should shout out "THREE", but oh no they don't!  This crap is "Fizz Buzz", so instead of "THREE" they yell "FIZZ".  In fact, every time a number that is a multiple of 3 is up, "FIZZ" should be called. If they fail to call "FIZZ" they become the "Fizzlebottom" and must sit out until the next round where they will become Falconer.  So, they next person then says "FOUR" (4).  But here is where it gets crazy...the next thing yelled out should not be "FIVE" (5), but "BUZZ".  All numbers that are multiples of five are called "BUZZ".  The player who fails to call "BUZZ" is now the "Buzzknocker" and must wait until another "Fizzlebottom" is created before they can rejoin the game as the next person after the Falconer.  But wait happens at "FIFTEEN" (15) which is a multiple of 3 and 5?!  Well my friend, in this case you exclaim "FIZZ BUZZ".  This will be true for all numbers which are multiples of 3 and 5.  He who doesn't call "Fizz Buzz" at the appropriate time is declared the "Mayor" and must wait until  fizz Fizzlebottoms have been created, and which point they must yell "You have been fizzed" and then they join the table BEFORE the Falconer.  The game proceeds until they is one one player remaining, who is declared the "Winner" and then they will be the person to the left of the new Falconer in the next game.

Here is a sample round (to clarify):

one, two, fizz, four, buzz, fizz, seven, eight, fizz, buzz, eleven, fizz, thirteen, fourteen, fizz buzz, sixteen, seventeen, fizz, nineteen, buzz,...

This game is great for all ages and groups.  For the social crowd, a penalty of a drink is often appropriate for a Fizzlebottom and fetching of drinks is the traditional role for a Buzzknocker.  I have recently been playing this game for the past few nights (dry for most of them) and I find myself with no desire to watch television or play video games.  The rush of Fizz Buzz is tremendous and it hones a dull mind into a razor's edge.

I encourage you all to spread Fizz Buzz and try it yourselves!

I remember on night after a long session of Fizz Buzz, I was discussing early twentieth century drama with some fellow professors and I accidentally called in nineteen-fizzbuzz rather than ninteen-fifteen.  You would have thought the house was going to collapse on us with the uproarious laughter.  Professor Charles was fit for the madhouse he could not stop giggling.

While I certainly cannot condone gambling, this also brings to mind the variants I have heard of from the far east which involve a similar game in Mandarin where the loser must supply the Winner with the appropriate sum of millet.

I usually play a similar version with prime numbers (fizz) and numbers that have only 4 factors(buzz).  If only one of the four factors is a prime number, then you go fizzbuzz as clearly there wouldn't be any overlap regularly.  This sounds pretty fun too though if you want a simpler version to play with simple people or small children.

The version I grew up playing uses perfect numbers (fizz), and Mersenne primes (buzz). It's simple and good for kids because there aren't too many of either.

Thinking about switching to a version using Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. Would probably be a major improvement, need to test though.

My nephew said he did this in his Pre-K class and had a pretty good time with it.  He was calling it "Fibonacki" though :D it was adorable

Back to the drawing board I guess. Trying to come up with an "adult" version that is complicated enough, but also has enough numbers in, say, 5000.
