Title: Optimism Thread
Post by: 'taterblast on September 02, 2013, 11:54:33 AM
everyone needs to calm the eff down. on friday we did what we basically do every year, only this time we played a team capable of capitalizing on how much we suck in the first game.

we're fine. :gocho:

There's not a serious lack of talent, just a lack of talent.

I support this notion. Plus Dickey usually has a non-con game where the O-Line doesn't show up, he chews their ass out for a week, then we dominate the next game :Purple Koolaid:

I'll join your optimism thread!

the line will probably get better.  the offense will probably start to click and score points.  if the defense can just figure out how to limit other teams to field goals, we can win 7 games.

it's not likely that friday was the best this team can/will play.

Bloggers are at least noting that North Dakota is the #1 FCS team.

Quote
• North Dakota State (FCS no. 1) 24, Kansas State 21. The Bison, ranked no. 1 in the FCS preseason coaches' poll, didn't merely get lucky against the defending Big 12 champs. No, there was a terrible, logical order to the final sequence of events Friday night in the Little Apple. The Wildcats, up 21-17, punted with just more than nine minutes to play in the fourth quarter. As one does, right? Nah: The Bison proceeded to stage a nearly nine-minute scoring drive that chewed up the entire field and culminated in a one-yard touchdown run from quarterback Brock Jensen to put NDSU ahead 24-21. K-State quarterback Jake Waters's first ensuing pass from scrimmage was intercepted by Grant Olson with 28 ticks remaining.

Look. We've all had our fun at the expense of Kansas State's athletic department before — miss u, Ron Prince buyout carnival — but WHOSE IDEA WAS IT to keep a date with the FCS team that's won the FCS national title the past two seasons? Somebody got paid to make this happen, and bloggers never get to make fun of other people's livelihoods, so don't mind us as we marinate in this one for a little bit.

yeah probably the worst thing about the game is that it was avoidable.  after they beat iowa state next year, it'll probably be a while before anyone schedules ndsu.

A few things I'm noticing as I'm listening to Snyder speak with media...

- He sounds more optimistic than I expected. He said Monday's practice was the best one his team has had since camp opened, especially for the offensive line, which has taken ownership of its poor performance against NDSU.

- He said he's starting to see the emotions he wanted to after "being embarrassed" Friday night.

- When asked about more playing time for QB Daniel Sams, he said, "Yes, we have something in place."

I was wearing a gray K-State shirt.  He gave me a "dude, help" look.  Could've been a "my wife and kids" look, idk.  The purple hug was ready but the opportunity was lost.

I saw a guy at Walmart in a K-State shirt. I was in my K-State polo. The guy had a big frown on his face, and when we made eye contact, we both nodded our head. I immediately punched the potato chips behind me and ripped about 100 chips out of the bag. Then I started ripping open all of the bags. Then the other guy grabbed the whole rack and just tipped it over onto the ground. We were just so pissed that K-State lost, guys. There was no controlling us. If the players even feel an ounce of that emotion, and you can bet your ass they do, look out. I wouldn't want to be ULL right now.

64. KANSAS STATE (0–1). I'm still a little bit wary of the people who actually predicted an upset by North Dakota State over the defending Big 12 champs, but in K-State's defense I am willing to believe that the shocker of the weekend says a lot more about the Bison than it does about their latest victims. For one, there have been others: Kansas in 2010, Minnesota in 2011, Colorado State in 2012, all practice runs for the big kill. For another, North Dakota State is just pretty damn good. Just a few years removed from "provisional" status, the Bison have won back-to-back FCS titles on the back of a dominant defense, one that's held eight playoff opponents over the last two years to 8.8 points per game. (The highest-scoring FCS team in the nation in both of those seasons, Sam Houston State, managed six points in the 2011 championship game and 13 in last year's rematch.) The upset in Manhattan looked a lot like a vintage K–State ambush, especially the winning drive, an 18-play, 80-yard march that snuffed out the final nine minutes of the game. If you can imagine a more fitting name than "Brock Jensen" for the quarterback who somehow out-tortoised LHC Bill Snyder, I'd like to hear it.

Anyway, this is the part where everyone writes off Kansas State as marginally talented frauds getting a long-overdue dose of reality until we look up in a couple months and realize the Wildcats have won like eight in a row.

Has anyone here ever messed up at work?

Have you had a day when you didn't do your best and knew it?  That is what happened last Friday to our football team.  When it happens to you do you think, "I'm worthless and will never be any good"?  Or do you think, "Next time I will get back to doing good work and improve my performance"?  Each of us probably thinks that our performance will be better the next time after we mess up. Do you think our football team will not be concentrating on correcting their mistakes and may actually improve?

Someone posted below that we need to know what we are good are at doing.  Well I think what Snyder is good at doing is:

1)  Analyzing a game to find our weakness on execution and game planning
2)  Focusing his players on executing fundamentals flawlessly
3)  Altering the part of the game plan that needs altering to improve

All is not lost.  I have faith that every facet of the game will improve as the team prepares for the next game.  Because that is where Snyder excels.....getting a little better everyday.

I started drinking Thursday night to prepare for the game here in Ioway.  I found a TV with Fox Sports One and settled in to enjoy the game with my K-State gear on and a pitcher of Blue Moon for each quarter.  It was a nice Pak.

I have had some time to think about the game.  I thought there were mistakes throughout the game that will not be there going forward.  I was concerned by the third down conversions, but I think those will get better.  The Big 12 is down this year, and I think we can really improve with better execution.  I am pumped for the game Saturday.

As poorly as we played in Austin, we were only two plays away from winning. For fun I'll go ahead and tell you the two...

1. Cantele recovers the fumble on the opening kickoff inside Texas' 30.
2. The butt fumble doesn't happen.

You could point to the fake punt or Hubert's dropped pitch too. It really did come down to mental errors on a handful of plays. Fix those and we can can have a respectable season and go bowling.

The problem is that this season stupid mistakes like this have been the rule, rather than the exception. It comes down to leadership, imo. This team has no vocal leader.

Agreed. It's too bad we couldn't have had a bye week before Texas. Having an extra week will give the team time to work on their issues and not just plan for OSU.
