Title: I Got a Question for the Board
Post by: Big Sam on September 01, 2013, 11:49:23 AM
Background: On Friday, at about 2:10, the dude standing behind the Audi decided to go all Tokyo Drift and cross Bluemont Avenue by flooring it through heavy traffic, the collision that ensued slid across the road and caught my vehicle in the mess (I'm not pictured because at first it appeared he might be catching fire, so I backed up slightly).

Question: What are the odds this guy actually had insurance?

Important Facts:

1).  He had no I.D. other than a Visa credit card.
2).  He had no driver's license, but did claim he had a permit (but did not have it with him).
3).  He sort of spoke a few words of English, but any information the cops got out of was impressive, but also a lot of "guesstimating" what he meant to say as far  as I can tell.

PS - The girl driving the jeep seemed okay other than a small cut and being in shock (expected).  Mr. Wen's (sp) passenger seemed okay, but was damn lucky for side curtain airbags.

Sorry.  No, he was driving the Audi.

He apparently had trouble applying geometry and physics while behind the wheel of said vehicle.  The result of the misapplication was the wreck that ensued.

i was stuck in traffic for at least 5 minutes because of this accident. i don't really understand the op, but it sounds like he is worried that an asian exchange student driving an expensive vehicle won't have insurance. i'm sure he has insurance. you can rest easy Big Sam.

my heart goes out to the audi driver. it must be terrifying to be in a foreign country and get involved in a situation that requires four cop cars, a fire truck, and an ambulance.

Yeah, sorry about that bubbles.  I was amazed at the response level (though I must note both injured refused treatment, so I guess they could have sent the ambulance away much quicker than they did).

Personally, the only reason I'm concerned is that he had no ID on him other than a credit card, and no proof of insurance.  Still waiting to find out his status.

I will try to avoid being in the aiming range of any accidents in the near future in Manhattan.  The entertainment value for all involved wasn't too spiffy.

Sam do you not have UMI (uninsured motorist insurance) on your auto policy?

Yes, I do.

I put the truck in the shop tomorrow.  I am going off the assumption he isn't covered (that is how my insurance is approaching it), and hopefully I get lucky and find the driver of the Audi is covered sometime tomorrow.

can't your insurer contact the police?  The police need to find out because it is a crime...

There is a vaguely racist undertone to this thread.

To be fair it is somewhat masked by the dumbass overtone.  Though in the case it's probably impossible to separate the two.

Guizzese, I have perfect pitch and it's more of a dumbass mid-tone.

Well, you know, when the kid didn't have a license (just claimed he had a permit elsewhere but not with him) and had no proof of insurance, I thought maybe things would escalate.  Instead, RCPD told me a report would be available with the number they gave me after the information they had was confirmed via the state either on Tuesday or Wednesday.  My insurance company is trying to sort it out, but as far as I can tell the report still isn't available yet.

So, I wait.
