I don't listen to podcasts, but I, like you, am looking for ones to start listening to. I will probably check a few of the ones in the link I posted. The comments had some good suggestions too. It's a technology/media/comedy based list, tho.

Credit cards, personal finance, =MODS?=, and podcasts: the four things that keep me paying this blog's Premium Membership fee.
I'm a yuge podcast guy. Yuge. (A lot of these are NPR-related, so if you think that's just for hippie libs, you should :MartaviousDNR: and make your way back over to the Joe Montgomery board.)
'clams, since you're in high school, you'll probably find these beneficial for your Government class and your History Day project:
-Backstory (with the American History Guys): explores a current event/holiday/trend through the three centuries of American history. Last week's was the history of body image in the US. (200+ pound sex goddesses! :sdeek: *Paging a certain goE psychiatrist*) During the gun debate, there was a good one on the history of gun ownership in the US, and how modern conservatives are advocating positions that were very similar to those of the Black Panthers.
-Decode DC: former NPR journalist who strikes out on her own to explore DC and its foibles. Pretty good, but doesn't post often.
-It's All Politics: RIP, my favorite podcast. They just called it quits this week.
General Listening:
-This American Life: good if you have a long drive. Bad for doing the dishes.
-Radiolab: already mentioned. Hit or miss, iyamHo.
-Anything from the Grantland Network
-Freakonomics Radio: either a ~20-minute podcast or a 6-minute mini-podcast that posts about once a week. Usually pretty interesting.
-TED Radio Hour: TED talks adapted for the radio. I don't really like them, but if you're super into TED you probably will. (Side note: TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. Did not know that.)
Niche-but-interesting:
-99% Invisible. Rusty can get this on the radio at home, but it's something for any ConstructiCats or anyone into design. (There's an episode on roundabouts.) *Paging j-von?*
-Planet Money: An episode on Libertarian Summer Camp? YES PLEASE. Other finance-related stuff, too. *Paging Steve Dave, sys, KatKid, KSC, etc*
-You Bet Your Garden: quirky garden podcast. *Paging that gE'r whose brother keeps giving him flowers.* (Ben ji?)
-Cast of Thrones: I don't like it, but if you like GoT (*Paging Mrs. Gooch and at least one Lynch bro*), this will be your jam.
-Solid Verbal: I haven't found a really good college podcast. This is the best one I can find. Suggestos?
-The HBR Channel: mainly for businicatz.
WonderMeal's :MartaviousDNR: Power Rankings:
1. It's All Politics (RIP)
2. 99% Invisible
3. Planet Money
4. This American Life
5. You Bet Your Garden

The History of Rome by Mike Duncan is pretty awesome. Can't wait for his Revolutions podcast to start in September.

I guess a caveat that once you get to about episode 15 when he upgrades his audio those early ones sound very meh sound quality wise. He really hits a stride by the Second Punic War (in the mid 20's of episodes) everything after that is pretty great. Immensely enjoyed it. Takes while to get through it all, there's over 170 'sodes.

i like those too. i'm at about 75 now. great fallback podcast for when current events podcasts aren't coming fast enough.
oh, for sports (sorta), the tony kornheiser show is podcast crack.
-
i thought podcasts were just tapings of regular everyday radio shows, had no idea they were the internet radio's equivalent to It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.
kinda disappointed here, folks

Common Sense - Dan Carlin.
Dude does his best to stay independent. He's a historian too.

cbs really needs to just copy how ESPN makes everything available on one app. Finding Gottlieb's whole show to download is ridiculously difficult compared to when he was at ESPN
