Title: Homeless peeps
Post by: 420seriouscat69 on July 17, 2013, 09:52:43 PM
Have game here in KC. They've got a different strategy then most who play the game.

For example: "Yo brother, you look nice today. You got some big meetings? Where did you go to school? Where do you work? You must be rolling my man. Anyways, if you don't mind, I just ran out of gas and gotta get to work. You don't happen to have a couple dollars do you?"

I've heard that line twice now while being downtown.

Another example: "Bro, what are you wearing? That smells nice! You GQ'ing for a lady tonight? Nice! Anyways, my car just got towed, do you have a few bucks for a cab so I can meet up with my friend to get help?"

Their strategy is solid, but it sounds like a lot of work to hear "NO, sorry!"

No eye contact and continue walking, the key is to let them know that you dont give a crap about them or their story.

I hate talking to strangers in the first place, but homeless people who are super pushy almost make me have an anxiety attack.   My breath gets short, and heart beats fast, and my singular goal is to get away as fast as possible.  It's hard to explain because it's not fear of the person, it's solely about the conversation. I don't care about your story dude, stop talking to me or I might trayvon you.
Title: Re: Homeless peeps
Post by: HerrSonntag on July 17, 2013, 11:45:16 PM
Its hard to have one strategy, because you can get by with 90% on one approach but theres always going to be that one guy who's pushy/talkative enough where you know the only thing that will bug him off is telling him to piss off but you can't.

When i travel abroad, homeless people are 1000% worse, and i know pretending i don't speak any language they do (i speak english and german fluently and a little french) works great, you just have to sell it, if they do catch your eye start saying something pissed off sounding in jibberish and they quit... so yeah, next time a homeless guy starts talking to you, do an impression of a subtitled movie and sounds pissed off, should work

One time my girlfriend and I were in Flagstaff on the way to the Grand Canyon.  We stopped for gas and this homeless dude who reeked of booze walks up to me to ask for money just as I'm putting the pump away.  My girlfriend, who was sitting in the car, decides this would be the perfect time to go buy new sunglasses inside the gas station.  I'm not leaving my car unsupervised with this alcoholic bum so I have to stay out there and deal with this obnoxious rough rider for what felt like half an hour.  I was pretty pissed at her about it.

With the ones on the Plaza I just give them a howdy before they get a chance to say anything and continue on my way.  The ones that recognize me just give a "how's it goin today man?" So I'll give them a little response.

Yeah they kick them off if they are "aggressive" in their panhandling.  Basically you could try and get one riled up or just tell one of the guards he was bothering you and they would kick that guy off for a while.  After a few times they will be banned.

i'm talking about having jan marcason and jim glover draft legislation making it illegal to bum money in our entertainment districts.
i'd imagine that the country club plaza hosts more visitors to our city second only to our airport.  the last thing tourists want to deal with is these jackasses begging for money on every corner.  i don't care if that's how it is elsewhere.

The amount of "bums" or "homeless" people that aren't actually homeless but everyday citizens who can make good, tax-free money by wearing trashy clothes and writing on cardboard is on the rise.

There was a video of a "homeless" man in Texas that could pull at least 60k a year.  A good year over 100k.

Family friend was once approached by a woman who claimed to have 3 kids and needed money for diapers, clothes, etc.  Friend told the woman to stay at this location and she was going to go out and get her some supplies she needed.  Friend came back with said supplies and woman was gone.  If the woman REALLY needed those supplies to support her family, I doubt she would have bailed.

Also I remember walking by a "homeless" man asking for cash in the Georgetown area in DC.  This guy was also playing on his new flip phone (no smart phones at that time except Blackberry's).

I usually take the ignore, don't-look-at approach.  If I feel guilty or in a giving mood, I'll walk in the nearest food place and get a meal to-go for the person.

Have you guys ever watched those shows like Drugs inc?

Anytime you give money to a homeless person they go and buy smack with it and shoot their dope up on playgrounds and leave their needles for small children to get stuck with.

DO YOU WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR LITTLE JIMMY GETTING HEP C?

Yeah most of the Plaza bums have phones and do it as a job more or less.  The old trying to raise a downpayment on a cheeseburger guy used to rake in like 50k a year.  There are a couple on the plaza that are picked up and dropped off by their spouse each day.

Funny story: I lived in a swanky condo on the Plaza for a while a couple years ago and had to park in the garage next to The Capital Grille at night in a reserved spot so my car didn't get A) blocked in, B) vandalized or C) broken into...anyway, I digress. I walked past TCG and normally stopped in for a glass of scotch on my way home and developed a small "hey there, hows it going?" relationship with the GM and valet fellas. Nothing large, but one time there was a bum camped out by the stairwell and saw that I had a Chiefs shirt on and when I promptly told him to screw off (amongst other words) and get a job like the rest of us, he yelled Chiefs suck very loud and started making a huge commotion and taunting me because I was a Chiefs fan. He followed me onto the sidewalk so the people eating and coming into/out of TCG could see him and you'll never know who was walking out to get into his car...Jon Baldwin and Tamba Hali

I stood there talking with the valet's and guys that came outside (probably hoping for a fight) while this is all going down. They exchanged words with the bum about how he should be thankful that he can even be a bum in KC and if he doesn't like the Chiefs that plenty of other cities have room for bandwagon fans yada yada yada...pretty sure the bum crap himself when they walked over to him and never heckled me or anyone around TCG again.

I got hit up by a kid needing money to air up his bike tire near campus in Topeka once. Later I passed again and I saw that I had been scammed. When one of his friends asked me the same question, I told him to get some from his friend! HEY OH!

Also, I usually just give out gift cards that I have in wallet or tell them they can have whatever money is in my wallet. Usually a buck or two. Just depends upon how I'm feeling that day.

here in vegas, when walking alone on the Strip, i always have iPod headphones handy. i don't plug them into an iPod necessarily, but will usually just put the cord in my pocket. helps me to avoid conversation with the homeless.

oddly enough, if i DO have an iPod, i almost always give to the homeless. the music sets the mood, and i feel really terrible for them; at least until i watch Dateline NBC and find out that it's all a big scam...
