"For now, we acknowledge that there were no problems caused by the 777-200 plane or (its) engines," Yoon Young-doo, the president and CEO of the airline, told a media conference on Sunday at the company headquarters.
Initial reports said two people were killed and more than 70 injured when the Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 crashed on landing at San Francisco International Airport.
If confirmed, it would be the first fatal accident involving a Boeing 777, a family of twin-engined long-haul aircraft which has been in service for the past 18 years.
With more than five million flights, according to Boeing, it remains one of the industry's solid workhorses.

That 777-200LR is one long flying bitch. I've ridden them from Johannesburg to Atlanta non-stop. Currently listed as the fourth longest non-stop flight, and the longest for a plane with one two engines. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-stop_flight

I love the super calm Chinese lady who just stared down a gaggle of US reporters and described nonchalantly exiting through the hole in the back of the plane after unbuckling her 4-year old AND getting her carry-on from the bin. Stud/boss travel move.
-
I'm guessing the pilot pulled up short on his approach and tried to get altitude at the last second tipping the tail into the dirt.
-
Kind of remarkable that only two people died (so far). One of the teenage girls who died was killed when she was run over by an emergency vehicle that was driving up to the plane. :frown: You miraculously survive a rough ridin' plane crash, then die immediately afterward.

don't want to be too insensitive here, but mack brown thread?

I lost my life in San Francisco, waiting for the plane to land right, but I found it in a smokecloud. The tail was falling off.

been thinking about this a little - they have to fire those pilots right? or find them no-flying jobs. they can't put them back on paying flights. really kind sucks for them (if true).

Yeah, I think they have to. Then nobody else is going to hire someone who was the only person to ever wreck a 777.

Well, they're not dead which is kind of lucky and stuff.

according to random pilot BBSs, korean pilots are apparently bad pilots(racist? probably)

One of the Gladwell books covers this. Outliers maybe?

One rumor is the pilot in training that was actually landing the plane was actually a year or two ahead of the pilot in command at the same flight school. The theory is that the "respect your elders/superiors" that is so pervasive in Asian cultures is why the pilot in command didn't take control of the airplane sooner when the pilot in training screwed up the approach.
Also, I have seen some "Asian pilots can do it by the book but don't adapt to changing situations" talk that is straight out of this cinema classic(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.movieprop.com%2Ftvandmovie%2Freviews%2Fgungho.jpg&hash=20c03cc11d5893d40ef2fac2aff3d10386f76a86)

 holy eff. The balls on that summer intern.

That's actually offensive enough that someone may pursue legal action. If they use Bay-area lawyer Mi Su Yu, that station is mumped.

It sucks more for the intern who is going to get fired over releasing fake names, imo.

Do you have to fly cargo for a year or something before commercial? Seems like a good idea.

I think it's a lot longer than a year.

most pilots spend a lot of years flying small great lakes'y planes before getting promoted to the big time. a 777 is pretty big time. pilots get paid shitty until then so this guy was probably partying pretty hard about it right until he ended his career.

This is only in the U.S.; Europe and the Middle east are notorious for sticking 500hr pilots in the right seat of an A320. I doubt Korea ia much different. The FAA has new 1,500hr minimums coming into effect soon also. (again, only for U.S. pilots, which these are not).
Without stating the obvious US pilots are significantly better trained than their compadres from the rest of the world and it's usually not even close.

My cousin flies 777s for Emirate Airlines. Took him about 10 years of bullshit with Mesa airlines and US Airways before he got it. Plus he has to live in Dubai.

US also has a bunch of people who want to be pilots some day. Not sure if this a big career path or dream in other countries/cultures. When I worked there for a stretch, I know even Great Lakes could be choosey as eff and have stud pilots because there was such a ridiculously large applicant pool.
