So I'm moving into a new place next semester where I'll probably stay for the next two years and I want it to feel less like a dumbass college apartment and more of a tastefully mid-twenties guy's place. I'm thinking about buying some lamps and ditching the bare white walls.
I want to accrue some cool maybe old-timey maps of all the places I've lived (joco map, riley county map, map of kansas, map of champaign, maybe even map of peoria??).
What are some sensible decorations?
-
find a Kohls and buy some cheap "art"
-
go buy old classic vinyl of some albums you like and frame them.
-
Make the art yourself. OR, hire a monkey to do it. For as little as $250 you can get this rough ridin' monkey's original art and hang it on your walls.

You will be the toast of Mideastern IL.

250 bucks for monkey paintings? seems too good to be true.

Don't feel guilty about exploiting a rough ridin' monkey. Just add some other "socially conscious" art to make up for it.

Here, this one's on the house.

You will be surprised how many really good pics you can save that aren't tagged or watermarked.
I saw a pic competiotion on nat geo (or something). all pics were amazing. All pics were large high res. All pics were not protected and able to be dl'ed. Not one had a tag on it. I have two framed in my main bath right now.

are they safe for work?
-
Yes.
-
i assume you'd just print them out at a kinkos and then pay for framing?
-

Even easier
Save file
Send to snapfish or kodak.com
Wait for mail in like two days
Go Michaels or some other craft store. Their frames are always on sale.
Open back of frame
Put pic in
Hang on wall
If you like boarder and stuff, you can buy a cutter for like $40 and the boarder stuff for basically nothing then diy super easy.
-
Also, snapfish is Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) cheap. Like $2 for a 5x7 including shipping.
-
If you like paintings, you can find some dece stuff on ebay. Lots of absolute crap to sift through, but some dece stuff too. Some good knock offs and some good originals too. I put up three large original oils in my office that I like for something like $150 total plus about $45 ea to have stretched.

Years ago, the Manhattan Public Library actually allowed patrons to check out "art work," which consisted of cheaply-framed reproductions of classic pieces (Van Gogh, Monet, etc.) Knew a guy who adorned his apartment with those things. Looked pretty lame. Damned things were shiny.
One night, during a primo binge session with his buds, one of us shook up an unopened beer can, tossed it to him, he opened it and it sprayed all over one of the library works. He took a rag and cleaned it right off. Don't know what the surface was, but no worse for the wear.
Something to consider if binging is frequent in your new place?

You should make your own. Cartography is where it's at.
-
I like the maps idea, dlew. I may use it at my house. we already have one map on the wall, may add more. We also have an antique globe that is fun.
I also sort of display license plates from places I've lived on a bookshelf.
-
Blow up family portraits to at least 6'x8' and display them proudly.

I'm mid-20's and I have nothing on my wall. Should there be something there :ohno:

you should try to find old sanborn insurance maps, typically turn of the century-ish and can be very fascinating if familiar with the town. I know the ku library has a whole series of them available for my town from like 1884 onward
-
available online, I should say. not by a computer ATM

Here are some ideas on how to decorate with maps.

I'm really into old timey advertising posters from defunct airlines and travel agency posters of destinations in the 20s-50s. It's kind of stupid but I nerd out on them.

if you stumble across a vintage poster shop you should stroll in and tell them what you're interested in and they will throw on the white gloves and lay out, like, wall sized old advertisements of stuff like that. it's really fun. also, just google picture searching "vintage travel ad" and cruising through them is fun.
-
so like, urbana or worse? is dlew like a ku student living in tongie? my god.

Mpix is better than Snapfish

Really like the map idea dlew. I have a large framed map of the carribean(sp) in my living room and have thought of getting a couple more to compliment it but I have not looked very hard. If you find a good place online to buy some already framed maps let me know!
Speaking of decorations anyone know a cheap way to frame newspapers? I have about 5-10 old newspapers I found in my GPA's house from historic events(moon landing, allies win edition of stars and stripes etc) that I want to frame and hang on the wall. I went to hobby lobby but the frames were like $40 each.

I do this on Sundays. Sats are for making frames out of reclaimed barn wood.

I've seen super old plat/plot maps for Kansas "townships" before. My in-law's have one that shows the landowners back in the early 1900's. They also have framed some document where their family bought the land from some east coast officer in the Union Army who was gifted the land by President Lincoln. Really effing sweet.

just pay that rough ridin' monkey, dlew.

Yeah, I know. Only need 8 for that chandelier then he can still make 3 hot cocoa in a jar to enjoy while he looks at his chandelier; or maybe some summer brew would be better right now.
