Title: Rugby 7's Thread
Post by: EMAWmeister on June 02, 2013, 03:56:35 PM
Every sunday afternoon on NBC. This thread is for the intensity, passion and excitement that Rugby and Rugby 7's brings.

Life vs Navy for the 'ship right now!

I didn't get to watch it, but I assume the broadcasting presentation was awful and dumbed down like it always is on American coverage of rugby.

i like 7s but i think it'd be better if they played longer - maybe 12 minute halves?

I was drunk one night flipping through channel and watched about 30 minutes of some rubgy 7 game, I think they were aussies. It was facinating because the plays all looked like one big triple option but I never figured out the rules.

People would die of exhaustion. Championship games are 10 minute halves and are basically the hardest thing in the world.

Samoa vs Fiji a few weeks ago might have been the best sevens match ever.  Samoa would DOMINATE when they had the ball. Powerful running, passing with surgical execution, etc.  But Fiji had lightning quick wings who would score every time they touched the ball. Went into overtime at like 35-35 ( :sdeek:) and in overtime, a skydiver landed on the field during the middle of a try run. Just absolute mayhem.

Oh, I won't disagree with you on that. I just think about it from the spectator standpoint. Barely enough time to knock off a pint before the game is over.

My cousin coaches rugby at Michigan and came across this pic of a U of M rugby alum from 1969.  It is a pretty boss pic.

That exchange is awesome. Others will likely back me up on this, but I have seen lots of fists thrown on the pitch, but never at the after party. It is very common to see the punchee and the puncher having a beer together.

i know little about rugby, but i've seen segments about it on tv and it seems pretty cool, just bros beating the crap out of each other then drinking together afteward. heard a quote "soccer is a gentleman's sport played by hooligans, while rugby is a hooligan's sport played by gentlemen."

Pretty sure it's been mentioned, but any college-aged gE's should go to a practice (even if just to watch) and then attend at least the home games. Always a great group of guys to know and to party with.

most of rugby's history has a classist element to it. it was something the rich boys played at college while the riff raff played soccer. the main form of rugby(rugby union, not rugby league) wasn't played professionally until '95, this was done to make cost a barrier to entry.

any oldballs should go to alumni weekend (even if just to watch) and then drink in a way that would seriously offend michigancat. always a great group of guys to know and to party with.

I mean, if not every year, at least once every 5 or so.
