Title: unfounded conspiracy theories about everyday things
Post by: _33 on May 31, 2013, 08:57:02 PM
A theory I have is that cars don't need the oil changed every 3000 miles.  Who came up with that number?  My guess is Big Oil.

electronic devices on airplanes on takeoff and landing. They just want you to pay attention to the seatbelt bs and to get your crap packed up to speed the unloading process.

i've said this many a time, but i don't know how our ancestors didn't all die out of dry lips generations ago.  lip balm is probably my most important possession.  i guess they must have used rendered mammoth fat or something.

This reminds me of my theory that dentists are getting rich by lying to us and telling us all these problems with our teeth and performing expensive "preventative measures" that aren't really preventing anything.  If my feet feel fine and don't hurt at all I don't go to the podiatrist and have foot surgery to make sure they keep not hurting.  Nice try dentists, not falling for it.

If I put a drop of Carmex on my lips I'll be addicted for 6 months.

Actually sat next to a pilot on a SOUTHWEST flight and asked him about this. He said it had to do with back in the day when people would listen to AM/FM radios, apparently some of the channels pilots use are close radio channels and if someone was listening to a radio station on 107.9 and the pilot was trying to talk to the control tower on 108.1 it would interfere with the pilots radio signal sometime. Not really an issue with modern electronics but they still have the rule in effect.

A study proved the lip balm thing, but only for a certain lip balm.  Was either Carmex or Burt's Bees.  Cant remember which.

companies used to have to overbuild products, but now with computer modeling and whatnot companies can engineer their products to fail in a fairly short lifetime (5-10 years as opposed to old crap that would last 30+ years), making you buy more stuff.

your eyes will eventually get bloodshot (like over 20-30 years).  when they don't get enough o2 (through the lens surface), they grow capillaries to supply the cornea with blood.

Also it's way more likely they get stuck to the surface of your eve vs falling out.

Stop lights are actually synced to cause as much stopping/starting as possible and to encourage you to take a run at the yellow.
