Title: OT: tv repairman in NYC?
Post by: Ghost of Stan Parrish on May 20, 2013, 02:40:52 PM
My girlfriend just hooked up her television for the first time in months in her new apartment.  It's a Philips from 2005.  All she gets is audio, with no picture.  The screen is off completely.  I told her she needs to buy a new one, but she'd rather spend the money on shoes.  She wants me to fix it if possible.  Oh, also, she lost the remote years ago, so I'm just working off the buttons on the side of the unit.

Should I take the back off the unit and check the capacitors, or would the tv be completely dead (no audio) if that was issue?  Maybe I just need to find a new girlfriend?  Thanks!

if you're already using an hdmi cable I guess you'll just have to continue to deal w/o tv at your girlfriend's.

I'll take the under on that 5%.

Reasonably serious: considering converting to Judaism for her.

Wait, am I defending her honor if I point out she usually loves to spend money?

what is your tv situation like and do you guys even watch tv much?. maybe if yours is a few years old you could give her yours and tell her you were planning on buying a new one anyway. that's like a nice good guy thing but not over the top. also, if things don't work out then she just has your old tv and not a new one that you paid for. also, take a tv that you know works and plug it into the line to make sure it's not an issue with the cable, etc.

Sadly, no!  Super-impressive insidery info you've got there, SD!

This seems to be the consensus.  Now I have to think about what it means that I hadn't even considered doing this...

TVs are cheap.  Probably cheaper to buy a used one than to fix the one you have.

This is a good point. Are you using, HDMI? If not try that. If so, try a different cable. If that doesn't work, discard the tv and get a new one.

Can you get the on screen display to show up at all?

Nope, the screen is black.  No blue glow or anything.  When I hit the "menu" button nothing pops up.  The screen is just off.

if it has a bulb the bulb may be out. I had a Toshiba DLP that we had to replace the bulb on twice.

GOSP, do you know what a multimeter is?  Know how to use one?  If no, give her your TV and buy yourself a new one.  If yes, use the multimeter to figure out what's wrong.

Thanks, everyone!  I don't know what a multimeter is, nor how to use one.

I'd say the consensus is that the tv is "broken."  I'm not going to bother with it anymore.

But after taking a bit of a liquid lunch, I will offer to buy anyone who contributed in this thread a drink the next time you're out this way (offer is closed as of this post).

Even if you had/knew how to use the multimeter, you would still be buying a new tv. Sounds like your display is gone.  Just had one replaced, under warranty, and was told the part alone for my 47" is $550 plus something like $400 labor.  If it isn't under warranty still, new tv.

you could always just contact the manufacturer. sometimes they're pretty silly and will just give you a new one even if it's out of policy. Worth a shot, I suppose.

Yeah.  Mine was under warranty, but they sent me a new one AND send out a repairman to fix my broken one.  Boom! Two new tv's for the price of one.

Had a Mitsubishi 40" LCD go out after just under 3 years.  Mitsubishi Customer Service paid for the new panel it needed and I paid the labor, around $250.  It did take 6 months to get the parts.

Managed to get in during the first week to the brand new restaurant attached to Torst.  The food was fine; the beer pairings were superb.

I am planning a elite food super trip to NYC at some point.  Will have to hit up GOSP for elite recommendos.  Recent food centered vacation to San Fran was prob my best vacation ever.
