Title: Fred White, RIP
Post by: Ira Hayes on May 15, 2013, 07:00:19 PM
For those of us who grew up on Mike Evans, Rolando Blackman, Ed Nealy, and George Brett, Fred White was the voice of Kansas State University and the Royals.

Dev Nelson was the old bad person who tried to steal our baseball cards for pennies on the dollar.

RIP, Fred. You were fantastic.

Fred and Splitt are the voices I think of when I think of Big 8 basketball.

Dev was a friend to us all when he was in his Dugout.   :curse:

Yes, one Saturday morning Dev gave me a 1982 Independence Bowl program that he had for free!  I was so excited & I still have it.  But Dev certainly didn't pay Beckett prices when buying cards.

He called the Bill Walker dunk in Ames. fatty memorialized it in video.  I'll find it later.

I sat right next to him on his last call during the big 12 tournament. They did a standing ovation for him. It got a bit emotional. Then, out of nowhere, Kathleen Sebelius dug her rough ridin' heels on my shoulder to get on the court to congratulate the squawks on the 'ship. What a bitch!

Is Bill Self really that much of a horn dog to be doing Sebelius?

Remember stumbling into a bar on the outskirts of Manhattan a few hours after the bball team had just lost a home game to Nebraska, an astonishingly rare event in that era, and  find  Joe Cipriano NU's coach smoozing with Fred and Jack Hartman.  Yes farewell Fred good journey.

I probably shouldn't have brought up Dev. I know there were a lot of people that loved him.

But while Dev had a press box named after him and Denny Mathews entered the Hall of Fame, Fred White took a huge shaft straight up his ass. And through it all, he kept a smile on his face.

Fred White deserves similar praise.

If you loved Fred White, please take a look at this. It's the Royals' video tribute to Fred. He was a Wildcat and Royal through and through.
