Title: Picnics
Post by: michigancat on May 03, 2013, 03:26:27 PM
They're such a pain in the ass. Why do people like them so much? I have a perfectly good table, and plates, and sliverware at home, and can eat the food as soon as it's ready at its desired temperature. If I don't feel like eating at home, they have these things called restaurants where you can have people prepare food for you and serve it to you on a table.

for a picnic, you have to make your own food, get a cooler, probably drive to some park (because you have too much crap to carry to walk there), and then "enjoy" a staling sandwich that is either too cold or starting to go cold and probably drink wine out of a plastic cup because that's what you've got to do and deal with bugs and what to do with the trash and getting dirt and grass clippings (lawns, LOL) all over you and the food.

WHY?

I honestly can't say that I've ever done a picnic, mostly because they seem kind of gross.

I usually love eating on a patio with a table and utensils.

Nice work here michigancat.  I loathe picnics.  Why would I enjoy eating food on paper plates/napkins only to have said paper paltes/napkins soar out of my hand from some wind gust.  I spend the whole time in a borderline panic attack maintaining my plate, napkin, red solo cup and fighting off ants/bees.  If I wanted to play Twister I would freaking play Twister.

What do I do if I have to take a leak or drop the kids off at the pool?  Oh I know...go into some woods and unleash hell while scavenging for leaves.

Picnics are the worst.

yeah, and if you're with some tree hugger that refuses to use paper plates then you have to deal with carrying the disgusting food soiled cheap plastic plate and cups.

The idea of a picnic is very romantic, but not sure of the reality as I have never actually been on a picnic. I have eaten while camping which is close the same thing, right? (Probably not considered real camping by the camping experts on this board.)

Eating while camping is different because you generally cook your food at the campsite.

also usually sitting in chairs. the point people are making about sitting on a worn out blanket on uneven ground has merit.

edit: like emawblast said.

its intesting to me because there is a big difference between getting a blanket and sitting on the ground to eat a meal and sitting in a chair and drinking beer outside. one i could do 365 days a year, the other id rather cut off my arm.

Seems like a good alternative would be to take my meal out to eat on my deck. But someone hasn't put our deck furniture back in place since we got our new deck built.  :shakesfist:

Do any of the anti-picnicers backpack?  Never really been on a picnic but I certainly enjoy leaning up a against a rock and eating some hot chow as the sun goes down over the mountains.

I think only kids actually like picnics.  It's something you just do every once in awhile as an adult for the benefit of your kids.  Also something you do for events such as large family gatherings when half your family is trashy and you don't want them in your house.  So you find a shelter at a park or a lake or something.  Nothing beats a good old family picnic out at the riverpond.

Patios are the best.  Picnics are the worst.

One is something that can be enjoyed.  The other requires an immediate shower and to check for tics.

One time, I wanted to go on a "different" date with this chick I'd been seeing for a while and liked a lot and wanted to impress.  So I went and bought some sandwiches and some wine and took it out to city park and laid it all out, then went to her place and we walked over there.

The picnic was nice enough.  But pretty soon, a bunch of little leaguers (10ish year olds) came out and were playing catch near by where we were.  One of them threw the ball way off the mark and domed me right in the back of the head.  I played it cool because I wanted to seem like I was a good guy, but inside I was all "You bastard kids!  :curse:"

Anyhow, they're (picnics) a pretty good way to impress a girl if that's what you're trying to do.  Otherwise, they're very dumb.

This would probably influence any romantic notions i have about a picnic.  I love packing and making a meal high up in the mountains or along some ozarks stream... the self reliance aspect of being a walking unit containing all my food an shelter needs.

For a picnic, they are a nice way to wow a lady.  Thermos are your friend (rum and hot cider) and if you really want to bring some solid food (which, why? you have rum and cider)  Thermos soup is pretty nice too, maybe with some small sandwiches.  Laid out on a nice wool blanket on a warm sping day, doesn't sound terrible.   And bring a frisbee.

Meh.  Like all women I've been interested in at one time or another, she's a great young lady who will make some lucky guy very happy some day, but that guy ain't me.

But if i could go back in time and not have wasted that great date (city park picnic and wine) on her, i would.

DNR the thread but I am partial to picnics.  I proposed to Mrs. Bf on one.  I don't remember what we ate but when I was cleaning up the remnants of our feast is when I popped the question.  The sun never seemed so brilliant and the grass never smelled so sweet.   That spot will forever be in my heart because it was a place I played in when I was very young and now it is forever so dear to my heart.  I go there a few times every year and every time my heart is warmed.

i picnic'd once up in the konza prairie, off of LHC Bill Snyder family highway, pretty great time.

also, for picnics, i like to go to jackstack and order a bunch of food and sides.  they have everything you need to host a most fantastic picnic.

Do you not reuse date ideas with different girls?  I had about 6 or 7 "go to" dates and would reuse for all the ladies.
