Title: Peggy Po's and Nancy Neg's Spring Edition

Peggy Positives

Coach Snyder vs. Cancer as many know LHCBS is a longtime opponent of cancer and shows his disdain each spring by wearing his Nike Cortez with his navy blue blazer and charcoal slacks.  Well done coach.

BSFS Expansion looks delicious as I approached the stadium, I heard the distinctive ring of a strong construction worker hitting cold steel with a sledgehammer.  As the thick sonic reverberations bounced off of the UC I smiled knowing that construction was on time and not behind schedule.

F14 are some of the most dedicated EMAW around Did you know that Abe lives in Jokelahoma?  I mean Jesus Chirst.  He came to the Spring Game!  And periodically comes back to Aggieville Aggieville I'll be out in...Take a good hard look at yourselves Kansas State alumnae.  You better do some crunches and hit the road.

Gronk what an edition.  All of them.  http://deadspin.com/rob-gronkowski-drinking-bud-light-platinum-483812826 (http://deadspin.com/rob-gronkowski-drinking-bud-light-platinum-483812826)

It's Miller Time Harper will not be replaced or replicated, however Miller Time now must emerge as a legit 3rd option to TLBL and TT's 1-2 punch.  So far, so good.  The problem for Torrell has never been his size, but today he showed he is capable of running a great deep route when called upon (although when he is not the primary his routes looked sloppy) and can catch the money ball.  This is a huge development and good for him.

TT and TLBL  So happy that they are back.

Rose to the occasion a Sproles-esque reversal of field for 9 yards capped a really strong afternoon for flowerpowercat.  I hope Hubes gets spelled a little more than last year as Rose looks like a real weapon to both advance the ball in chunks and to retain possession

Sams looked solid You could nitpick the performance (he looked like he still struggled throwing the deep ball and had help with play calling to limit his reads/receivers to key on) but he had better zip on his throws, got the ball out of his hands, clearly brings a true dual threat and appeared the more confident and decisive of the two QBs.  The read option pass to Miller Time was the highlight of the day.

Andre McDonald re-appeared after a long hibernation although he played in 9 games, he did not make a catch last.  The Senior made a couple nice grabs and absolutely trucked a DB in a decidedly un-Tannehill-like sideline showdown.

I saw a very pregnant woman enthusiastically supporting her favorite player who turned out to be JuCo transfer Fullback Adam Weber of Colby, KS.  She had lifted her shirt over her sizable baby bump and painted "34" in purple and white paint on her exposed skin.  34 Belly.  What a mad genius!  It was a riddle of visual football art!  She was simultaneously achieving layers of powerful statements both subtle and apparent a real masterwork achievement and elevation of the genre of signage at sporting events:

statement 1: I am pregnant
statement 2: I support purple 34
statement 3: 34 belly is a play that should be run for purple 34
possible statement 4: purple 34 is the father of this child

Nancy Negatives

Our secondary looks particularly bad they repeatedly broke down for big plays- falling down, not knowing where their leverage should be, biting on play action, not playing an underthrown ball (resulting in a PI which was actually the third best possibility on that throw to TT) it was an underwhelming performance to say the least.  Obviously the depth is not there, but we can at least hope that Ty Zimmerman and Evans? Burns? can marshall together some better play against our actual competition.

our receivers struggled to get open at times the secondary, despite its potential for big errors, did a lot of the little stuff right underneath  Particularly with Waters, they held the receivers in check for close to 10 seconds before Waters would leave the pocket and scurry off for some yards.  They bumped the crossing patterns they knew where the release points were in their coverage and they made some nice aggressive plays on the ball and man.  Did not see a lot of missed tackles for Spring.

Front 7 is going to get unfairly trashed HFBIQKSUC know that Spring is for offense and defense is for Dr. P's so I will not dwell on the obvious lack of production, it is to be expected.  How to the ever, there were two concerns that were concerning to this humble observer

1. We gave the QBs tons of time and even when there was no rush, could not contain them.
2. We have a tendency to over pursue

Second things first- the over pursuit coupled with our secondary's breakdown potential has me even more concerned that we are ripe for a couple beatdowns (think OU-UT or KSU-WVU) this year.  That will hurt my feelings and make our record feel even worse.  It was like last night when I was playing beer pong and it was 1 cup vs. 1 cup and the oppos sank their shot, then the second guy (just for fun) nails his in the same cup just as the consequences of the first shot was being fully absorbed by my miller lite soaked synapses.  Point being?  Quick strike Bob Stoops in BSFS will be double painful (if they figure out a QB).

First things second- We did not have any "coverage sacks" these are good to get when your coverage is prone to break down.  It is like help for the homeless, or bailing your redneck cousin out of juvee or adopting a pet.... it is good for the soul and it shows compassion for the greater good.  Our front 7 have combined Gordon Gecko's confidence with no Glengarry leads.  These are best described as problems.

Things that happen in June (2 happy 2 happy-sad) happy: KK birthday happy: sonofKK birthday happy-sad: John Hubert is back from injury (but it is still sad because he was injured), happy-sad: FattyFest June 15th, We remember Shwan "Fatty fat fat" Alkhatib at Auntie Mae's.  He's one of the greats.  If you are in Kansas, or a surrounding state, get here.

Ron Realistics (addendum to negative nancy):

Ron is over in the corner of the classroom with his hand in the air.  I think he has a question and I think it might be, "have we not been saying the same thing about defense after the last few spring games"?

Stop me and tell me if you've heard this one before because I don't want to put in the work if the punch line is known: "we can't get pressure, we can't cover"

Ron will rebutt with another punch line, "I like my ice cream and spring game defense to be vanilla"

Two years ago we were coming off the horrifying '10 defense.  We had a safety moved to Sam LB, two new starters at corner, and one returning starter on the DL (kibble. And that was before kibble became 2011 kibble).  Our starting defensive ends looked to be what we believed to be a paralyzed Adam Davis and whoever we could find on the '10 intramural champs.

The only thing we had in either of the previous two seasons that gave me the warm fuzzies was art brown.

Honestly, and in Ron's not so professional opinion, we don't look like LSU but there are plenty of things to like about the defense.  I don't expect to be great but I was surprisingly pleased about several things I saw.  We have more than a puncher's chance to be decent on that side of the ball.

"have we not been saying the same thing about defense after the last few spring games"?
Hasn't our defense been pretty bad the last few years? Arthur Brown kept it from being embarrassing.

"Hey dtackles, it would be cool if you could keep some of the olinemen off of me every once and a while. but if this isn't an option, i guess I'll continue to make crazy plays in which i shrug off about 15 offensive guards and run from one sideline to the other to make the tackle and prevent the td."

Had a great time yesterday, my only negative was the concession stand lines were terrible but I'm pretty sure I saw a mod in line behind me so that was ok
