i want to cook cattle for 2 on it without stinking up the house. there's an existing gas hookup coming out of my exterior wall, so i want one that will use that.

i was just going off of what you said about wanting to be way below $1000 and using your existing gas hookup
if you want to be @ $200-300, charcoal and weber is the way to go. If you want gas, to get a good one at that price, go used. I found a 6 burner with a rotisserie burner that would have run me $1100 new for $175 on craigslist. Only had to replace 2 burners at $44/per burner so I had a kickass grill for under $300. That is the thing you need to look at, ask them if you can start it up when talking with them, if they say they are out of propane, take your own. If you start it and it looks like one big flame instead of many small ones as you adjust it, walk away or figure new burners in your price as they will need it.
if you want to part with $500 or so, get a new one

Reg. $400, i picked one up 2 springs ago for $200 at a Lowe's and i love it. A bunch of grill if you're doing a big gathering, and a propane or charcoal side for something smaller (though each is still plenty big) to suite your needs
caveat: overall, i love it, but heres what i can say about it so far. Rust: i've read alot about people having rust problems with them, but as much is true of any grill thats not 100% stainless steel... i keep mine in the garage (its got wheels on one end, so easy to move when done grilling and its cooled down) and after 2 years, no sign of rust.

I have this as well. It's a good grille. I have the side fire box for the smoker too. 3 years in and it's still in good shape. I haven't used a cover on it. I did repaint it this year but that cost like 8 bucks. I probably have used it 100 tiimes per year. I would say that it's held up nicely.

ok, this is good. so propane and natural gas are interchangable? are there any brands i should be looking for, or are they all the same?
-
Not interchangeable
-
will the weber rust at all?
-
ok, this is good. so propane and natural gas are interchangable? are there any brands i should be looking for, or are they all the same?
interchangeable yes, so long as you get new orifices, although natural gas grills tend to be stationary for pretty obvious reasons
weber is a great choice. I'm assuming that if you are using an existing gas line, your grill is going to be pretty stationary and with that being said, I'd stick to a stainless steel model if possible. This is unless the area your gas line is located is very well sheltered from the elements.
if you have existing counter space as in a cooking island already there, I'd look into just getting a grill head to attach to your existing space. Bull Outdoor and Lynx make outstanding products but are not cheap.
as has been pointed out, the weber genesis is a fantastic model but it is going to go for around $750 and up unless you find one used
you can always get a less quality one but you do get what you pay for and being in the elements takes it's toll quickly on things that aren't made with quality
-
Pretty sure there is a parts diff btwn propane and nat gas. I know they sell them designated one way or the other. Maybe a regulator difference? Have also been told that you can buy conversion kits.

you can generally go from propane to natural gas by just making the orifices a little larger but going from natural gas to propane is tough because there is no way to make the orifices smaller
if you want to be sure, look only for a natural gas model
if you have any shop chops, it is easily remidied

The Char-Griller Duo is amazing and on sale for $199 at Lowe's. Can confirm

excellent. so weber, bull outdoor or lynx. stainless steel. propane or natl gas, doesn't matter. hopefully someone will put something along those lines up on craigslist.

You can generally change out the orifices/burners in any grill to switch between the two. Will run between $50-100 depending on the grill and what needs changed.
-
Man, so not only can you choose between charcoal and propane these days but also natural gas? Hank Hill has got to be pissed.
-
I've had a Weber Genesis for almost 10 years and it still works great. Still has the original brass burners (3 burner model), I've replaced the grates a couple of times. Very little rust and its not the stainless steel model.
-
I got the last generation Genesis that was 100% USA made on clearance at Home Depot for about $180. Was a great deal. I never beleived the Weber hype, but they are worth it.
The best thing about Weber is that most of the time you can call up if something wears out or breaks and they will send you the replacement part free. Though I've not had to use this, there are TONS of people who buy used Webers then make them like new again doing this.
-
I bought a charcoal grill for $89 at Lowes and it cooks food well. Gets really hot and just cooks it up nice.
-
Love my weber, only problem was from stupidity on my part as i left the battery in the electric start over one winter and it got all nasty and messed up. I went with the 3 burner spirit 3 years ago so it isnt quite as fancy as the genisis but it works great. No rust or any issues and I leave it under my back porch uncovered. When i got mine Home Depot was the only place you could get it with the heavy cast iron grates. Not sure if this is an issue now but just look at the store when you go.

I used to buy cheap grills ($150 or so at walmart, bestbuy, etc) and the burners or grill tops would corrode out in a couple yrs and repair parts cost like 60% of the cost of a new cheap grill. When I bought my Weber, I did so because it has something like a 10yr warranty on the burners and a 25 yr warranty on the cast iron grill top.

Agreed, can't believe it was so inexpensive. Have used the crap out of it for several years now and have had nothing but success.
Also: the side gas burner is great for lighting the charcoal chimney. It was practically made to fit.
-
Eff gas... the only thing it's good for is lighting charcoal with a weed burner.
Go with a Weber Performer...find a good old ss top one on craigslist...you wont regret it.
If you want to go big, go for the Weber Rancher.
If you can't swallow that pill and still don't know what you want... go here:

Gas is great just have to season correctly. I don't have time to do charcoal during the week.

All you need is good lump (scrap the briquettes) and a weed burner to get it going. Less than 10 minutes from lighting it to searing at 550 degrees.
-
Yeah, I'm not buying a weed Burner
-
A very important consideration is how often you will grill. I grill at least three times a week in the summer easily. Use gas at least two out of three times. I also have a Webber kettle fwiw.

I'm not upset. I find it humorous that people give you recommendations and then you crap on every one of them.

Good point.
I grill year round. easily 3x/wk in the spring through fall and at least once a week in the winter. Also not buying a weed burner and don't want to mess with storing charcoal or having to mess with it when it's 20deg and windy out.
Gas all day err' day.

yes, agree on gas. if I had to clean up charcoal after grilling every time I'd just leave it and buy a new house.

Yeah, only instead of using one of the charcoal chimneys(or a weedburner apparently) they used to fight a simple stack of the coal and have to wait like 45 min to cook.

so, i never bought a gas grill. apparently no one sells used ones in the summer and the new ones are all so ridiculously expensive. can i just buy one of the super cheap ones (charcoal, i think i'm giving up on the gas idea) and be fine? i don't want to do anything fancy, just cook steaks and hamburgers without stinking up the house.

Sys, don't give up on gas.
Up until two yrs ago(my latest gas grill), I have always bought what ever gas grill was on sale at walmart for like $100, and I made a bunch of fantastic stuff on those. The main differences I notice between my Weber Genesis and those:
1. even heat. It is ridic how even the heat is across the entire grill on my Weber. The walmart ones always had hot and cold spots. That said, I used to use that to my advantage in that I would get certain things to a good sear and move them to the cooler spot to cook slower until finished or when cooking different things that like different heat(hamburgers and hotdogs for ex). Also, when cooking for others, the hot/cold spots give you a very easy way of cooking a group of items to different levels of done(med, med-rare, etc) when cooking for a group with differing tastes.
2. longevity. I have had my Weber for two years and it looks brand new. Usually by this time my walmart ones would have pretty serious signs of decay in the burner deflectors, grill, or burners. I used to go through walmarts every three years or so.
3. amount of attention I have to provide while grilling. I used to flip things on my walmart grills very often. like, very often to make sure they were where they were supposed to be and progressing how they were supposed to.
So, imo, you should be just fine with getting a cheap walmart gas grill as long as you don't mind baby sitting the grill often or throwing it out every three years or so, depending on how often you use it.
-
just seems i'd be putting too much weight on to the fact that i have the gas hookup available. if i give up on that, then charcoal should be cheaper for the same quality/better for the same price, correct? less parts and whatnot.
-
i don't want to replace it. it needs to last 5-10 years.

No clue. I really never messed with charcoal grilling due to my laziness and love of being able to just turn the grill on/off without having to worry about the other charcoal stuff.
-
i don't want to replace it. it needs to last 5-10 years.
Then, you probably should get either a more expensive gas grill, or go charcoal.

so you have a natural gas valve for a grill? you will need to get a NG grill, not a propane grill.

yeah, i have a gas line coming out of the house where i could hook up a grill. a couple of months ago, people (maybe cns) said i could get a propane grill and hook it up with a cheap conversion kit, but now i'm thinking i should just punt it and go cheap charcoal.
i need alexander to show up and tell me what to do.

I don't get gas grills. Might as well throw it on the stove in the kitchen.

think for yourself, sys
what did you end up getting?
-
just seems i'd be putting too much weight on to the fact that i have the gas hookup available. if i give up on that, then charcoal should be cheaper for the same quality/better for the same price, correct? less parts and whatnot.
so you have a natural gas valve for a grill? you will need to get a NG grill, not a propane grill.
yes, you can get an NG grill or a propane and a conversion kit.
yeah, i have a gas line coming out of the house where i could hook up a grill. a couple of months ago, people (maybe cns) said i could get a propane grill and hook it up with a cheap conversion kit, but now i'm thinking i should just punt it and go cheap charcoal.
i need alexander to show up and tell me what to do.

Go with a round Weber Charcoal grill, sys. Once you figure out charcoal it's lots of fun.

definitely buy it and you have plenty of money left over to get a nice charcoal or decent smoker
best of both worlds

Guys, my old offset smoker has reached the end of it's life. I think that I am ready to venture into the pellet grill/smoker market and am considering a Traeger or a Yoder smoker. Do any of you fine gents own either of the two and what are your impressions if you do?
-
Love the Traeger. Great for noobs who don't want to have to jack with fire maintenance.

Did you consider any others before you bought it?

Not really. Yoder and Traeger are equally expensive. I have actually been rocking a stand up propane one for a little while. It's volume is a lot more but it is VERY wind sensitive.
-
I am torn between Traeger, Yoder, and Memphis.
-
Like gooch said, traegar is easy, you can do a lot with it. Biggest drawback to me for grilling is the grill doesn't get very hot. Biggest drawback for me for smoking is I don't think you get a really thick smoke flavor, which I like. Good, reliable, versatile product tho.

I've heard good things about Green Mountain Grills.

I own this one (minus the timer)

Best of both worlds. Just a great grill. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Got the same one this summer, and I agree, absolutely love it. And the built-in charcoal bins/separators and lid rest are wonderful additions.
