I understand why everyone likes Nirvana. They started a movement. Soon after they came on the seen EVERY band became a grunge rock band. But you know what? The Smashing Pumpkins were way better. And the reason they didn't start a movement of everyone making the same music is because nobody could.

Jake, I disagree as well. I find Corgan's voice really annoying. Still like SP, but not as much as Nirvana, stories aside.

Fun fact: they were both supporting acts on Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik tour in 1991.

i like nevermind better than melloncollie, jakesie. truthfully though, I listen to unplugged in new york alot more. Almost as much as i listen to antipop and sailing the seas of cheese. truth is almost all of those 90's bands were great because they didn't let a genre define them.

Give me Deftones and Alice in Chains over Nirvana any day

Be quiet and drive, hole in the earth, passenger(ft. maynard james), change, my own summer bout the only deftones songs i like. Alice in chains had hole, rooster, heaven beside you, would, man in the box, etc.

Nirvana had: lithium, something in the way, smells like teen spirit, token eastern song, rape me, moist vagina, heart shaped box, plateau, lake of fire, you know you're right, polly, dumb, in the pines, pen cap chew, clean up before she comes, they hung him on the cross, grey goose, ain't it a shame, even in his youth, verse chorus verse, D-7, pennyroyal tea, and im sure i forgot a few,. until you've heard every song i just mentioned then you shouldn't comment. there are atleast 20 nirvana songs that the average person has never heard.

I thought this was going to be a legit overrated thread.

Come on dudes.

The Beatles have some great ones and they really started a movement in rhythms and lyrics.
Nirvan showed their talent on unplugged.
Chains are groovy.

To everyone else, you all know that Kurt Cobain died in his prime, therefore you are all biased. I'm talking about getting a group of people and not even telling them the band's name, story, or anything. Just letting them choose which is best based on music.

I'm happy to help, Oklahoma Wildcat!

"overrated" means the majority of folks think something is better than it actually is.
Example: Many people think the band Mumford and Sons is amazing, when in reality, they are just an average bunch of dudes who strum their mandolins really fast, and since most bands don't have a mandolin, people confuse this with talent. Hence, overrated.

rated by what?
The general consensus of people.

I hope this helps and that you can enjoy this thread.

Don't get me wrong, I sing my ass off anytime Mumford and Sons comes on. But I do that with Call Me Maybe, Party in the USA, and Bad Romance too. But I don't go around trying to tell people that they're good songs. They're just catchy. If you equate catchy with good, then I guess you can argue that Mumford and Sons makes good music.

I think it's pretty unfair to lump them in with the Maybe/Party/Romance crowd. Mostly because they are a band that all play instruments and write their own music.

Hard to be overrated when it's never won Best Drama Series. Only 3 Best Actor in a Drama Series awards, and 2 Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series awards. So it probably is overrated by me, but not the general public, which is, by definition, necessary to be considered overrated.

I am 100% with Jakesie on this one. Nobody could ever or will ever be as undeservingly overrated as Nirvana.
I see some people saying the Beatles. That's weird. The Beatles were in the early 60's, and people still listen to them, and their songs still resonate with new generations (like mine), and their musical and lyrical genius is still evident, like, all over the place. You know what? Nobody rough ridin' listens to Nirvana anymore. If I hear Lithium on the radio I'm changing the station. The whole idea of Nirvana was purely a reaction to the overblown excess of 80's glam. You know what? Nobody rough ridin' listens to glam anymore either. They were two extremes that have not passed the test of time.

I understand why everyone likes Nirvana. They started a movement. Soon after they came on the seen EVERY band became a grunge rock band. But you know what? The Smashing Pumpkins were way better. And the reason they didn't start a movement of everyone making the same music is because nobody could.

I would just like to say, "eff You, Billy Corgan and your self inflated worth." Neither Nirvana nor Billy Corgan started a movement because they were extensions of what several other bands had been doing for years. Both just happened to be more marketable sounds in comparison to those before them.

Smashing Pumpkins are definitely completely overrated.

What a stupid thing to argue about.  Appreciation of music is inherently subjective.  Do you rough ridin' like it or not?  Who gives a eff where it's "rated"?  Nevermind that you cannot reach an objective consensus on where it's "rated" in the first place before you begin to debate the merits of said "rating".  Pointless.  It's goddamned sounds people find enjoyable to listen to or they don't.

“Do I belong in the conversation about the best artists in the world? My answer is yes, I do,” Corgan told Rolling Stone. “I’ve been too productive for too long, and despite what anybody wants to strip away from me, I am influential.”

Billy Corgan is one of the most self inflated "artists", not to mention a gigantic douchebag, the music industry has ever seen.

Quote from: Billy Corgan
Let me be blunt. When oscar Springsteen puts out a new album I pay attention. Same with Neil Young. Because they’re major artists who have something to say. I consider us in that category. When we do something it should be taken seriously, even when we’re off. If we’re marginalized by the culture, we’re not going to play dead and say thank you for our B-plus status.

definitely right. there is this weird fall out when a band as historically significant as sonic youth goes without recognition throughout their careers where some fans (typically newer fans) overreact and attach themselves to that underappreciation. depending on the context, sonic youth is both vastly underrated and overrated.

Can we just change the title of this thread to "90's bands discussion"?

so because they wrote 1979 and a few other songs that were popular it makes them worthy of the attention they got in the 90's? I've heard people say they were one of the most influential bands of their time (including Corgan himself), that Siamese Dream is "one of the best albums of all time, dude". The fact that the lead singer for that band compares himself to Neil Young is example enough of how out of touch fans of the Smashing Pumpkins are.

Well if some guy i have never heard of named Quinten Tarantino is going around saying he is super great and influential then I would probably consider him overrated. Quentin Tarantino is probably overrated as well. Just to be clear, overrated doesn't mean a person or band or anything is horrible. Just means they aren't billed as advertised. (Still personally think The Smashing Pumpkins are trash, though).

Arbys seemed underrated before lunch but then I got a sandwich there and now it seems really overrated and actually pretty rough ridin' disgusting.

Quinten Tarantino always talks about how great and influential he is. Does that make him not great?

I'd like to drink a beer with Tarantino, seems like a cool guy

It'd be amazing. I bet we wouldn't even get a word in.
fwiw it's worth, it would be more than beer. He wouldn't have it any other way. I hope you like snow.

Radiohead, ratm, tool and soundgarden seemed like they were the only ones doing anything amazing in the 90s, but that is just my opinion. I didn't listen to 90s music in the 90s though since I was too young so take that fwiw

She say it's cold outside and she hands me my raincoat
She's always worried about things like that
She says it's all gonna end and it might as well be my fault
And she only sleeps when it's raining
And she screams and her voice is straining

[chorus]

She says baby
It's 3 am I must be lonely
When she says baby
Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes
Says the rain's gonna wash away I believe it

She's got a little bit of something, God it's better than nothing
And in her color portrait world she believes that she's got it all
She swears the moon don't hang quite as high as it used to
And she only sleeps when it's raining
And she screams and her voice is straining

[chorus]

She believes that life is made up of all that you're used to
And the clock on the wall has been stuck at three for days, and days
She thinks that happiness is a mat that sits on her doorway
But outside it's stopped raining

I saw mb20 at a festival in high school (one of the lazer shows at Clinton lake) .   It was awful.  Worst band I've ever seen live.  Cake at one of those same shows was the second worst.

Jujubes are overrated.  They're terrible but there's always one person who sees a box and goes apeshit over them, for no good reason.

My old man went to a MB20 concert at the Sprint Center in his company's box and has been obsessed with them ever since. My views on them are probably skewed because of this.

Went to go see Everclear perform with MB20 when I was in high school.  Art was sick and Everclear cancelled and the venue was refusing refunds.  We stuck around because someone in my group wanted to flip off Rob Thomas before leaving. Rob comes out and tells everyone to go to the ticket office and leave now if they want a refund.  Forced them to give refunds.  Don't particularly like MB20 but appreciate Rob Thomas now.

It's rated about as high as it could possibly be rated. If you think maybe it's half a peg below best acting performance of the decade (as michcat clearly does) then it should be considered overrated.

I would have no issue with saying the entire movie was overrated.  If you haven't seen A Knight's Tale, catch it the next time its on TBS for 24hrs a day this summer.  Then watch Batman.  (https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Foi47.tinypic.com%2F2640xo8.jpg&hash=2b338c20db5be49d461139133544ef1caa4ec3f0)

Yeah, the difference in HL's performance in every other movie he was in vs his performance in Batman is why it is talked about so much(also the fact that he died right before the release).

I really enjoyed it and was really disappointed that he died and wouldn't have a chance to do other things now that he showed he wasn't just some chick flick actor.

I've heard good arguments that his performance in Brokeback Mountain is better than his Dark Knight performance. DDL even said he was inspired by it for his performance in There Will Be Blood.
