Anybody bought a used car and registered it in KS recently? Trying to figure out if they calculate sales tax based on KBB value or the price on the bill of sale.

We all know exactly what you're thinking. :dubious:

Its on bill of sale. Buddy bought a used Land Rover and put down the sale amount as $1300. When he registered it the lady made some comment about how that was pretty cheap and he just told her it needed a new transmission and alot of work.

Well yeah. I'm thinking if I get a screaming deal on a car for $100 less than KBB, I'd hate to pay the extra $7.50 or whatever on the inflated KBB price. :dunno:

does Kansas have Gift Affidavits for vehicles? you should do that if you can.

Yeah, but it's not a gift, so I'm not going to falsify an affidavit, and I'm sure not going to ask the seller to falsify an affidavit.

The last used car I bought, they used the KBB value at the registration office not what I had written as the sale price on the title. That was probably 7 years ago or so

that's crapcity because to assess KBB value, the would have to have known the complete condition of the car. who did the car inspection?

That is why they changed it back to whatever you write on the Title.

Are property taxes on vehicles still crazy high in KS?

Finally got my car registered. I can now confirm that they go off the sale price you write down on the title. I got an amazing deal on a car for about 50% of KBB value, and they didn't bat an eye. Starting to wish I'd gotten an even better deal, you know?
Side note - it is a lot easier to buy a gun than it is to register a used car. Ridiculous. The best part was paying the KS Highway Patrol $20 bucks for them to spend 30 seconds writing down the VIN under the hood. They didn't even look to see if the VINs on door jambs, etc. matched.
Second best part was paying the 50-cent "tax collection fee" on top of the taxes. JFC.
