Don't read the Kitchen... (http://curtiskitchen.com/weber-dont-be-nagging-wife-k-state-fan/)
-
I enjoy how he types his strawmen in bold
-
Is this the worst piece of writing ever written? Spoiler Alert:
Yes
-
he is so jealous of gE
-
A more fitting title would have been "Dear gE"
-
wow that's a pretty bad. :frown:
-
I enjoy how he types his strawmen in bold
Yes. Almost exactly what I would have written if I was a sock.
-
I have to really give oscar credit for selling the heck out of exactly why his recruiting failed (but then succeeded?) at Illinois. A lot of people are buying it without understanding/comprehending the inherent contradiction in his pitch.
-
meh, what ever, has some points but is extremely off about why we are mad.
-
Did he have his 12 year old cousin create the layout for that horrid looking blog?
-
meh, what ever, has some points but is extremely off about why we are mad.
That's because it's not really an argument. It's just a sales pitch to the GPC crowd.
-
Didn't exactly give any arguments as to why we'll be good going forward.
-
I agree with almost the entire piece.
I don't know enough about recruiting to know whether Weber is rough ridin' us there -- and that's at least half of a coach's job for sure. I guess we'll see. As for the other half (the coaching), he's doing fine by me.
Kitchen also lost me at the end with this:
Some of the game-by-game reactionary judgment this season — based on god-knows-what credentials because you haven’t seen good basketball in your uniforms in over 20 years — left me incredulous at times, all the way to the end, and while the season ended prematurely for my money, I’m just sort of glad it’s over.
Just because you support Weber doesn't mean you have to contend Martin and Huggins didn't show us "good basketball." And how any real KSU fan could be even "sort of glad" the season is over is beyond me.
-
That is some really bad writing.
-
We are nutjobs because we don't think oscar Weber is good enough for K-State? OK
-
I enjoy how he types his strawmen in bold
BTW, I stole your old joke in my twitter response.
-
Stop it, you instant-gratification wanting, everybody-should-have-a-Mike-Beasley-in-tow believing nut job.

the Only Thing He Got Right was Martin Missing On Ron Baker.

Curtis needs to lay off the haterade. My god.
-
He spends a lot of time on gE.

That's one of the worst pieces of sports journalism I have ever read, both in terms of content and execution.

It's pretty typical fare in the Kitchen.

that post was more creative than anything CK's ever written

I must admit that Curtis did a nice job of pissing me off, assuming that was his intent.

I enjoyed the part where he implied value in Gipson getting "Chris Lowery'ed".

I liked it. :emawkid:

I enjoyed him trashing the Fresno guy

Yep, I love this part he’s already stated that he learned from his mistakes at Illinois, where he got caught up in recruiting based on boosters’ and fans’ opinions and demands rather than focusing on the types of kids suited for his coaching style and system.
I mean, it wasn't just boosters and fans opinions that those 4 and 5 stars could play but also the Izzo's, Donovan's and Crean's of the world too.
-
And, maybe sticking to that “guys who fit” idea will lead to guys like Wichita State’s Ron Baker, the Scott City, KS, kid who wowed the nation this past weekend, helped the Shockers make the Sweet 16… and couldn’t get a sniff from the former K-State staff.
who the eff starts a sentence with "And-comma." can we move this thread to the birther pit?
And, have you looked at his old blog? dark text on a dark background in a goddamn blogger template. and, his new blog is just as awful looking - what a douche.
And, he tries to pass himself off as a legitimate sports writer with 'credentials' but his composition and grammar pissed me off so much that I couldn't focus on the content after the first sentence-paragraph. did he say anything interesting?
And, maybe if he's going to have a career dedicated to publishing articles he writes, he should at the very least try not to be terrible at writing and publishing. there's a reason he's been writing for over a decade and no one will give him a real job. it's not as if he's Cormac rough ridin' McCarthy, toiling away in obscurity before winning a MacArthur genius grant.
edit: typo.
-
I liked it. :emawkid:
Me too. The butthurt about oscar's success is seeping out of the internet
-
and all some K-State fans
I couldn't go past that.

to be fair, you did take that out of context. there are many other examples of bad writing to pick on.

i've never understood the idea that since your particular college may have sucked for the past 20 years, you don't know what good basketball is. i could argue the opposite is true, that having dealt with what we've dealt with, we better understand what good basketball is. but then i remember what i read on this board, and i guess maybe kitchen is right.

He is SO MAD that we caught him stealing _FANframes.

I enjoyed the part where he said one of the reasons "K-Staters" are mad at oscar is because he's supposedly looking at other programs.
 on so many levels

and that is a win for the whole board. Thank you Curtis!

It's not DNR but CouldNR. Argument and execution defeated my attention span.
-
the Only Thing He Got Right was Martin Missing On Ron Baker.
I like how Baker is now awesome for "wowing the nation" but Weber does not suck for shitting his pants on the same stage. There's just so much thickheaded stupid in that article.
-
Seemed pretty sexist

Yeah, I'm glad Mr. Bread can really see it and say it. Its probably the most annoying aspect of the K-State fan base. I'm sure I'm guilty myself from time to time.

why is a retired Seattle SuperSonic writing about the catz?

Come on, from my anecdotal perspective having not lived in the midwest for nearly 2 decades now. I am surrounded by fans (some of which are actual alumni) of two of the bluest blood basketball schools in existence. They literally melt down at the first wisp of an attempt or perceived attempt by anyone to slight their favorite school . . . be it message board, media, whatever. Dude, this message board caused a complete meltdown with actual local news coverage over a perceived slight of a school and their football program. This message board caused members of another fan base to try and have us censored by the KSU administration.
So, spare me this "K-State fans are thin skinned" B.S. Hell, over on phog their head explodes if Kevin Keitzman . . . Kevin Effing Keitzman isn't kissing their ass 24/7. Hell, at one time they actually tried to start a boycott campaign of his sponsors.
It's an inherent reality within all fan bases that actually care.
-
I love insensitivity. It makes sports fun.
-
I wonder what Frank did to Curtis. Sheesh.
Curtis and I talked about that a while back. There was something there, but I won't get into details as it was a personal conversation. But it did change the way I looked at Frank, so it has changed my tone towards him on this board and other forums.
Curtis is a friend of mine, so these threads are very awkward for me. One one hand, I want to defend him, but on the other hand, he knows this comes with the territory and he can speak for himself. He doesn't need me to do that for him.
He and I have had conversations about what was in that article on several occasions. I agree with him in a lot of ways and disagree in others. He's a level headed guy who understands the game and played at the small college level. I think a lot of the characterizations of him on this board are incorrect, but again, I know him personally, so my perspective is not that of a fan who just reads and critiques his work. I'm just reading a bunch of posts where someone calls my friend stupid, so it's kind of upsetting to me, but again, I know it comes with the territory.
-
he's not stupid, his article/op ed was inaccurate.

i thought i remember him writing something about his relationship with Frank. maybe i'm thinking of someone else. dunno.

FWIW, I have no problem with Curtis and I usually read his columns. I think he usually writes pretty decent pieces and presents a slightly different perspective from normal beat writers, which I like. My problem with this piece is it seems clear he let whatever his issue with Frank come through way too much and IMHO it hurt the main points he was attempting to make. The "nagging wife" angle just didn't work and took away from the writing, almost like he was trying too hard.
-

WELL WHAT DID FRANK DO
-
do you think his wife nags too much?
-
Did he attend and graduate from KSU? Asked him this question and did not get a response.
-
he's not stupid, his article/op ed was inaccurate.
I wonder if he just decided to go full Glenn Beck and feed the tuck masses. Ratings wise, it wouldn't be a bad idea. Because otherwise he's really bad at his job or his personal issues with Frank impair him from being objective (which I guess is also being bad at his job).
Pan, ask him if he was serious or just pandering to the majority.
-
I don't think that is his "job" fwiw

Also, I wonder what Frank's side of that story would be. Because we can already see that Curtis can't separate emotion from fact. Doesn't sound like a super reliable source.

And, he is bad at his hobby.

I'm not protecting Frank. It was a private conversation, and I'm not going to share the details. _FAN implied that there is a history there. I can confirm that.
It wasn't a long drawn out ordeal. Frank was apparently really cool until a misunderstanding occurred, and he cut Curtis off. That's ultimately the gist of it.
-
Regardless of content, as a copy editor it would not have made it past my desk. The incredible laziness of most sportswriters is what gets to me. That being said, Kitchen is usually ok.

if you aren't protecting Frank, what happened wasn't that big of a deal and it would most likely make Kitchen look bad more than Frank.

I'll be ignorant somewhere else. :sadpeek:

I'm not going to be critical of Kitchen's writing because I've always read it as a blog. Its not like he's writing for a paper or a fan site with an editor, its simply an independent blog where he puts out his opinion. I don't see it much different than my _FANframes, etc. I know that my writing generally has plenty of errors and can be picked apart as well, so maybe I'm less likely to be critical because of that.

Not really. I don't think anyone looks "bad" in the situation as I remember it. The conversation took place a year ago, right after Frank left, so some details are a little hazy now. I think that it just confirmed that Frank had no problem burning bridges with people, which is something we already knew from a lot of different avenues.
-
Jesus some of you are dense. Sometimes its more important to protect the availability to converse rather than the actual content of the conversations. People need to untuck.

and Pan, I don't want to offend you on this deal but his attitude about this issue just irritates the hell out of me.
We don't agree on everything, and I said as much. On occasion, at least in football, we've had point/counterpoint phone calls.
My concerns that I've shared with him are consistent with some of the larger fears on this board. How will he recruit? Does he instill the right attitude with his players? Does he put emphasis on the wrong things, etc.?
However, I do mainly agree with him that the notion that Weber is destined to fail isn't something we can definitely predict, and at this point, after winning a conference title (even in a down year), he's earned the right to at least have a "wait-and-see" attitude next year after we lose Rodney, Tay, and JO. If things go into the dumpster immediately, then yeah, #BID, but I'm willing to at least give him and these new recruits another year.
-
you know when someone is recounting an argument they had with someone else and they use a really freakish voice for the other person to make their side of the argument sound better? that's what the bolded strawmen remind me of.

As I said on twitter yesterday, I don't think we will have an option outside of letting this play out for at least one to two more years (outside of someone having pictures). What pisses me off about his article and a lot of people on twitter is that they treat the shared title as a get out of jail free card and act like he (or any coach for that matter) is beyond reproach. What these people are missing is the genuine interest in the good of the program that we have. Weber may turn out to be a fantastic coach here.......I just have my doubts based on past performance.

Always a possibility, but say what you want and let the chips fall where they may. It's not like he's got a business to support based on access.

also, the other downside is you can look really stupid

also, the other downside is you can look really stupid
When you put something out there, you will inevitably find someone who disagrees with you and thinks you're stupid.
-
Kitchen doesn't get to call everyone who disagrees with him stupid without them being allowed to call him stupid back.
Also, I would totally take Upshaw's frosh year for a 7 footer.

Also, I would totally take Upshaw's frosh year for a 7 footer.
I'm pretty sure he was aware of that when he adopted that tone.
-
I'm not going to be critical of Kitchen's writing because I've always read it as a blog.
You don't come out and write slam pieces against coaches, teams, or fanbases, either.
It was chippy, but if you have free reign to write whatever is on your mind, why not? He's not a beat writer. He is a blogger with credentials and access to interview coaches, players, and administration. If you want to get something off of your chest, do it.
because you might lose your access? :dunno:
Always a possibility, but say what you want and let the chips fall where they may. It's not like he's got a business to support based on access.
yep. man oh man i'm going to write a really hard hitting piece of journalism. now just who should i write it on???
a current coach? nope. not a good idea.
a current player? nope. not a good idea.
a current kstate atheletic dept employee? nope. not a good idea.
some annoying fans that a lot of people don't already like? boom. jackpot.
i mean curtis basically just wrote the equivalent of a pep rally speech where the guy is tanking and stuttering the whole time but ends it with manhattan high football rules! and then everybody applauds and goes wild and cheerleaders victory pyramid then talk of two kegs at red bridge or goofy. sorry friend of curtis kitchen but it was cheap, lazy, and riddled with inaccuracies. oh well though it's up to 5 pages now on this blog so i guess he's doing something right.

For the record, while I don't agree with everything that's said here, I am a aE proponent and defender. And my previous post that you responded to wasn't in support of me telling you how to think, it's my opinion on the "rope" I'm willing to give oscar. You know that I respect your opinion and enjoy you as a poster.

also, the other downside is you can look really stupid
When you put something out there, you will inevitably find someone who disagrees with you and thinks you're stupid.
Oh, I don't think he's stupid because I disagree with what he says.

also, by all means take your time on oscar. i mean everybody here loves _fan and i'm pretty sure that if you asked him today, he'd still want woolridge coaching the team if at all possible. this is a pretty forgiving bunch.
-
I just don't think his stuff is very well written. not even to the level of pseudo-intellectual. maybe two or three pseudos. maybe four.
Whatever idiot, that's your opinion and I wouldn't be surprised if you're a Jew or even a dark skinned ethnic minority. Kitchen rules!
Whoa, listen, I'm just making a point regarding his writing. I don't think racism is something you should bring into this.
I hate you and I think a woman's place is in the kitchen! Curtis Kitchen on the other hand is a stud!
Well, that's fine. I don't agree though. Look how much more reasonable I am than you.
DUR DUR DUR DUR FARTNOISE DUR!

I'm more patient/forgiving than most, but I've said multiple times my patience with Wooly was extremely dumb and I will not repeat that again. 6 years for that guy is still an embarrassment to K-State basketball.

CK: quit being a bunch of bitches, gE...you guys suck and are stupid. oscar, along with everyone else, is better than you deserve.
gE: CK, your passive-aggressive attack on gE was was riddled with logical fallacies, grammar mistakes, poor composition and your website is ugly. thanks for the amusement.

oscar does not equal Wooly...
Yeah, I know no one was saying that...
But Give Brucey SOME credit. The early exit was very disappointing, but the season overall way pretty awesome. Hating on they guy because he was fired or has an annoying voice has gotten old...this season should give him a couple (2-3) years of time to see how things work out, and for gods sakes, the guy had surgery as a child which rendered his voice intolerable...cut him some slack.

I liked the part where you said you knew it was a strawman and then went on to beat the living eff out of the strawman.

I wouldn't have taken that tone, and I'll probably say as much. Especially after last Friday. IMO, oscar gained some capital with folks sitting on the fence during the conference season, but he lost a lot during the La Salle game, especially with me. I thought he treated the NCAA tournament like it was some reward or bowl game. And I hated his attitude during the post-game press conference. So, I think it's understandable that people want to open fire. I'm just hoping for the best and trying to talk myself into some sort of positive outlook.

His, "Let's make it one game farther than we did last year in the tourney" motivational tactic was the most uninspiring, cowardly, idiotic thing I've heard him say so far. Really left a sour taste in my mouth when the result was an early exit at the hands of LaSalle. That will keep my oscar hate fueled until he wins another conference championship, tourney game, or lands a good recruit.

By his approach to the tourney, or by my critique of his previously stated approach?

one thing that's funny is oscar's approach and results in the tournament are the absolute least of my concerns with him.
-
the guy had surgery as a child which rendered his voice intolerable
If this is true, I'll feel guilty for letting his voice bother me so much (but it still does & still will, unless he starts beating KU regularly). :ck:

how are people only now learning about this? i read a lot about oscar when we hired him and it was mentioned in several articles. anyway, there is very little difference between making fun of a person for something he was born with and making fun of a person for something he has because of surgery to fix something he was born with. :dunno:

The absolute least? I'd put his voice as below his moronic tourney strategy

Did he attend and graduate from KSU? Asked him this question and did not get a response.
No, he did not. But he is/was a KSU fan.
why are you protecting frank? Grow some balls and tell us what happened.
That's ultimately the gist of it.
i'm almost positive i heard about this; i can't recall from whom. it was something stupid like martin told kitchen something that he thought was off the record and kitchen blogged it (presumably because he thought it was on record). and then martin like refused to acknowledge kitchen's existence from then on.
i can't recall what the blogged info was, but it was something really boring.
-
also, the other downside is you can look really stupid
When you put something out there, you will inevitably find someone who disagrees with you and thinks you're stupid.
i think he's stupid because he's such a bad writer. maybe if i talked to him, i'd find out that he's a good talker and i'd think he was a little smarter.
-
Dave Skretta's (? -- AP guy) feed on twitter with oscar's postgame quotes was really incredible. I mean, it just laid bare oscar's loser-y mentality. And all the Brucites missed it (or ignored it) because they're so much more obsessed with the anti-oscar portion of goEMAW than caring about the long-term fate of the Cats.
-

I'm sure in the back of Pan's mind he has to know that his buddy is a poor writer. Pan also writes for a blog and isn't a poor writer. If Kitchen wasn't his friend he would clown Curtis too. Pan why does your friend resort to trolling at times?

We haven't had that conversation, but he tries a lot of different approaches. I think blogging gives you the liberty to try varying styles.
That doesn't answer your question, but it's the best that I can come up with.
-
Like michcat, I don't think he's stupid because I disagree. I think he's stupid because he can't form a coherent, consistent argument in his poorly written rant about the other side being illogical.
Not to mention the Frank thing. If you're gonna use your "access" to write what you think about fans, then be honest and explain what's motivating you.
But yeah, good for him rallying the GPC crowd behind him. They're not stupid, so I guess he's not either.

Since you have no choice in the matter, you SHOULD be team oscar now! If Currie would have brought in Slats Grobnik, I would be team Slats until which time Slats proves that he's a loser.
The question has been asked and needs to be repeated: Which coach in this fair land, having a better resume' than Coach Weber, do you think we could've gotten in here last April? Herein lies your problem and the problem of all those who won't get on board.
oscar Pearl? Doug Gottleib? You're talking about a program that threw the dice with a no name High School coach that was taken in by Huggins because of his Florida recruiting ties.
The truth of the matter is: KSU can do no better than to acquire a good X and O's coach who knows how to coach up 3 star recruits, runs a clean program, and can land an occasional 4. You need look no further than LHC Bill Snyder. Now, let go of Frank and get on board.
