Did ku play today?

All the KU fans on my FB newsfeed are posting all sorts of cutesy "yay for us" stuff. It's making my phone buzz all day and really is interrupting my awesome life. I'd filter this stuff if I had the time. :curse:

I don't think KU fans realize what Michigan is going to do to them on Friday

I really hope they handle Michigan. If they don't there is a halfway decent chance of ending up with an all big 10 final four.

I am very worried about this guy. Hardaway Jr. and Burke scare the crap out of me. I'm not real sure how we are going to guard them, might just have to hope their 3s are not falling.

I think the entire NCAA tournamant is an exercise in hoping the other team's threes are not falling.

Yeah, he has really made this year. I mean, Releford has been great too, but without Withey this year would probably look remarkably different. He has done an amazing job.

there's no "probably" about it.

KU: 41.1% eFG% defense (#1). 38.7% 2PT% defense (#1). Withey completely changes the game with his presence inside.

Kind of a slap to the face of big 12 hoops that whithey is not a naismith finalist.

I think every team that plays KU (not big 12) doesn’t realize what Withey does until they start playing him. They see him on film, they see what he does to other teams, but they just don’t understand the effect he will have on them. So I see Michigan being the same way. KU will play aggressive on the perimeter - don’t have to worry about back door cuts or drives to the basket because of Withey – and Michigan will get flustered because they won’t get the same shots they are used to. Probably leads to some turnovers, some transition buckets. With Withey, you can’t just throw the ball to Burke and have him get to the rim when they are in trouble (like they tend to do).

Interesting to see how Michigan attacks them. On offense they are #11 in eFG% at 54.6% and #10 in 2PT% at 53.8%. Going against KU who is #1 in both categories.
Michigan is also #1 in Off TO% (14.5%) and defensive FTR (22.3%).

Michigan wins by 10
-
The only way KU loses to michigan is if they put together two stinker halves of bball. They've only played one good half in 2 games.
Great defense always beats good O.
-
I'll take the team that has far superior guard play
-
Seeing Withey progression really makes me pissed off at Jordan.

You mean the guy our coach mostly refused to play until the last few weeks?
JO this season was all about oscar trying to play for the future with Gip rather than with a senior.

It's a joke that he wasn't selected Big 12 POY. Absolute joke.

LOL... the butthurt is strong with this one. By the way, Bill Self is 8-0 vs. Michigan.

What a rough ridin' meaningless stat. Last time they played was 2 years ago and they lost in OT with Ohio State 3 days later and totally different teams.
Predict KU to lose=butthurt, ok got it. Like I said, I'll take the team with superior guards and a big man that will give Withey all he can handle

I won't disagree that oscar played a significant part in JO's lack of playing time (specifically his 1 post system and his preference for Gip's offense), but consistent foul problems and JO's back injury were also very big factors in how much he played.
-

Withey was talented and highly recruited, but he was not very good when he came to Kansas. We abused him his sophomore year at home. He was a surprise last year as a complement to Robinson, but people chalked that up to people taking it towards him and away from Robinson. His progression has been very impressive, where Jordan would show streaks of awesomeness, followed by 0/2/2 statlines.

I think JO would be a lottery pick this year if Bill Self had coached him for 4 years.

Best analysis I've read this entire tournament.

He averaged 2.4 fouls per game and fouled out 4 out of 33 games played. There were a few games when JO picked up a quick 2, oscar overreacted.
-
I think Withey will be the first Self player to have a great NBA career (although the Morris twins could end up being consistent starters from the looks of it).

Florida/FGCU is going to be entertaining.

I agree that oscar's "2 fouls in the first half" policy is excessive, but JO was prone to do that and then sit. (JO and Gip both averaged 2.8 fpg in Big 12 play, FWIW.)
-
it's odd how shortsighted some of you are being as it relates to the level of play JO exhibited this season. jo's (lack of) playing time had everything to do with jo playing like crap for the majority of the season. a 2nd half against la salle doesn't change that.

Maybe. I've only watched a handful of KU games, 3 of which were the games against K-State, but he seems to have a good enough midrange jumper that , with his defense, would let him start for most NBA teams. Even shot (and made) a 3 this year. Wouldn't be surprised if he was in the league for a long while, to say the least.

FWIW, I agree with this and I think even JO would.
I understand the oscar hate around here and agree with much of it, but it does get old that any narrative that doesn't support oscar hate is pretty much dismissed or not considered.
-
I think the idea that people are only upset with oscar (because he’s oscar), is fairly short sighted. His leash has been short(er) than other players – I’m looking at you Will. And when you look at the efficiency by which he’s played (which I’m sure oscar doesn’t) then his lack of playing time (and Will’s playing) do not correlate.
-
comparing will spradling to jo is pretty hilarious and something i wouldn't have thought of doing, 'grats.

I was comparing your theory that playing time is earned based upon performance.

Odd comparo.
Will/Tay or JO/Gip makes sense though.
Besides, with 100% of college coaches, fair is not always (or usually) equal. Everyone knows this.

I value what JO brings defensively, which is more than Gip, which makes up for any ppg disparity. oscar didn’t/doesn’t. JO's minutes had nothing to do with JO’s play. It was oscar's preference.

That's a fair point. JO put up consistent Dboarding and block numbers all year. I think the trend in oboarding (and improvement during Big 12 play) correlates well to his overall improvement in whatever it was that oscar valued in his play and thus his increase in playing time.
And he really had 2 sections of the season, he sort of bounced around early in the preseason; then starting with Gonzaga as a low point gradually worked up to playing more by the time we played KU in Manhattan. Then he had another period of bouncing around, a low point at OSU, then another trend of playing more as the season closed out. Also, his periods of playing less correlate well with the stretches that Gip played well and vice versa.

no question, gipson was a useful player and that he and jhr competed for a limited number of minutes available for bigs. and most players, jhr had great games, bad games and a lot of games in between. but it's impossible to look at his season-long numbers and conclude he played poorly this year. there is absolutely no question that he was one of kstate's five best players, and honestly, if you approach the numbers without preconceptions, it'd probably be easier to argue him as the best player than the fifth best.

Gipson was the better option for oscar's system. JO seems to like to face up and oscar's offense seems to want him to be back to the basket. This is what I was saying in that oscar wants to run his system the way he will in the future and he thought it would be best to do so with his Soph big that likes to play it that way rather than altering it to allow JO what JO is comfy with.
-
also, JO has hands that react to the ball as if they were made of cinder blocks.
-
Typical goEMAW, hijack a perfectly good butthurt thread to argue about basketball stuff.

I was actually kind of butthurt about K-State losing. Had you guys in my Sweet Sixteen. Now my entire West bracket is toast (except for Ohio State).
