Title: Boise State/La Salle
Post by: kso_FAN on March 19, 2013, 09:02:47 AM
As most expected, the Cats drew a 4 seed, but they also drew the recently added play in game between 13 seeds, supposedly 2 of the last at large picks in the field. Last year as a 12 seed South Florida won their 1st round game and then upset 5 seed Temple. 2 years ago 11 seed VCU won the first round game, upset Georgetown, and then made the Final 4. Hopefully the Cats aren't the 3rd upset victim in 3 years.

As two of the last teams selected, its no surprise the Cats' possible opponents are similarly ranked; Boise State finished 44 in the RPI while La Salle finished 46 while BSU was 49 in kenpom with La Salle 57. Boise State played in the tougher Mountain West conference and finished with a SOS of 53, going 4-7 against Top 50 RPI teams and 8-8 against the Top 100. La Salle finished with an SOS of 77, going 2-4 vs the Top 50 and 6-8 vs the Top 100. Both teams had moments where they received votes in both the AP and Coaches polls during the season. Boise State featured a pair of 2nd team All Mountain West players in guards Anthony Drmic and Derrick Marks while La Salle had A-10 1st team Ramon Gallaway and 2nd team Tyreek Duren.

Boise State

The 3 charts show the tempo free stats for Boise State for the season, Mountain West games, and their games vs Top 100 kenpom teams (14 games, they went 7-7). They play at fairly high pace, and played their fastest against the Top 100. Notably they have poor post defense as evidenced by their lack of blocks and high 2PT% agaisnt them, but they are also a very good 3PT shooting team and rely on the 3 a lot; those numbers are very similar to ours. They also allow their opponents to shoot a high amount of 3s. Also, they rely more on playmaking, especially by their two lead guards. They are a very consistent defensive rebounding team, but their defense slips quite a bit against better competition.

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg29.imageshack.us%2Fimg29%2F3305%2Fboisestateplayers.png&hash=8a76fb032aabf7935dced704c220b59ca64dcd06)

I put together per 100 possession charts to better show actual production while on the floor, but also added shooting charts. The top left chart shows the starters (bold) in addition to experience and height. Marks and Drmic are their key players with a solid pair of posts (Watkins and Buckner) and a drive way shooter (Eloriagga).

La Salle

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg521%2F3025%2Flasallemetrics.png&hash=3049da326aa6ef3745323b58c9f4095749df4572)

La Salle has some similar metrics, but they slip substantially on offense against tougher teams. They rely much more on a defense that forces TOs and are a very poor defensive rebounding team. Their 2PT% defense slips in conference play, and offensively while they rely on the 3 at a similar rate to Boise, they also feature a much higher assist rate.

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg32.imageshack.us%2Fimg32%2F646%2Flasalleplayers.png&hash=5a95efaca9ab1765dd9324bc3a8b7503bde5760c)

Like Boise, La Salle is led by a pair of perimeter players with a nice complimentary player inside (Wright). Its notable that one of their better post players, Steve Zack, has been out for the last several weeks with a foot injury.

I expect to play Boise State. Boise State is the better rebounding team and La Salle really slips shooting the ball against better competition. Plus, if Zack is still out, that will substantially hurt La Salle's interior defense and rebounding. Of course, either team could get hot from 3, and in that case La Salle may have the advantage because opponents attempt a lot fewer 3s against them. Either opponent would provide a nice challenge for the Cats, but I would expect a comfortable win against either one.

Thanks _Fan.  Any thoughts on why the play-in winners have had such success? Is it because their opps have less time to prepare?  Underestimate them? Random?

Any D-1 hoops coach will tell you, "the toughest game in the tourney is the first game in the tourney".

Playing one greatly knocks the nerves off and gives the winner a bit of momentum heading into Rd 2.

So if I glanced at those stats correctly - you're saying Boise State lives and dies by playing the lottery (AKA shooting from beyond the arc) ?

BS.

It's because we're drawing conclusions from a population of 3.

Yes. The lottery applies more to defense than offense because you usually have more control of the quality of your offensive looks, but its still a bit of a lottery if you are shooting more than 40% of your attempts from behind the arc.

Allowing opponents to shoot 37% of their attempts as 3s also probably means they allow their opponents a lot of good attempts.

Thanks _Fan.  Any thoughts on why the play-in winners have had such success? Is it because their opps have less time to prepare?  Underestimate them? Random?

At this point its random because its such a small sample size. I do think winning a game can't hurt though for a 11/12/13 seeded team.

I just noticed that 7 of our 9 worst offensive rebounding(OR%) games have resulted in losses.   :sdeek:
Boise St. seems to be a good rebounding team, could that be trouble for us?

I'm not overly concerned because we've rebounded well lately, but its definitely a concern for us, more of what we allow though. I think we'll be fine on the oboards against either team.

There's NOTHING BS about it...  Although its a small sample size, both my statements are true.

I don't understand how the Mountain West is a tougher conference than the A10. Butler, St. Louis, Xavier, Richmond, Temple, VCU compared to New Mexico, UNLV, SDSU and BSU. Idk seems about equal maybe the slight edge to the A10.  I just don't get conference ratings sometimes.

I was just curious what these 2 teams did away from home against conf foes.    So both BSU and LaSalle played 8 road gms and 1 conf tourney game.   Here is what they did=

LaSalle = 45.7% eFG  and 0.99 ppp
Opp. = 51.5% eFG and 1.04 ppp

Boise = 47.1% eFG and 0.96 ppp
Opp = 52.5% eFG and 1.06 ppp

I do like that both of these teams were under 1.00 away from their home court

The season really breaks down to 2 segments; BS and AS (before and after Shane became a starter) .

Weber was clear from the start that he was going to play small; but his original small 4 was Nino.

Nino started the first 9 games, including the losses to Michigan and Gonzaga. The Cats shot better than 33% from 3 in only 2 of those games. Nino did start two more games, but those were the 2 when Angel and Tay were both hurt and didn't play and Shane started also. Texas Southern was Shane's first start, and the Cats only shot 2-13 from 3. But the game after that was Florida and since then the Cats offense became the strong shooting team it is today, largely because Shane added that additional shooting threat that Nino didn't provide.

And in our 4 games at Sprint Center, we played 3 good tourney teams who are a 1,3, 5 seed and then also Texas

Ksu = 45.7 eFG%  and 1.04 ppp
Opp. = 43.4 eFG% and 0.97 ppp

We played pretty good defense against Fla, Tex, Osu and 1st half vs KU
The 1st half vs KU we were just awful on offense.  The other 7 halves at Sprint = 1.11 ppp and 48.4 eFG

Personally, I'd rather see LaSalle, but I think Boise will win. Lasalle don't rebound particularly well, and I'm not as worried about them getting hot from 3 and making the game closer than it should be. Either way we are much better than both of these teams and it should be a cakewalk.

So true.  The lower seeded team is not supposed to be favored to win, this when they do, it is called an upset.  The other meaning will be how you feel when you don't make it past your first game and are left crying with an 0-1 tournament record for 2013.

La Salle was the team I preferred playing, just looking at their numbers.

They are a bad rebounding team. In games vs Top 100 teams they got beat by over 6% on OR%.

They don't defend the paint well at all; very low block% and a very high 2PT% given up.

Their key strengths match with ours. They win by limiting 3s (to their credit, they were very good at that, though not great tonight), defending 3s well (lottery), and forcing TOs. All things that are our strengths offensively.

Defensively they take a lot of chances for steals (thus their high steal percentage), but clearly that ends up in them giving up a lot of open looks and lay ups. With Angel playing so well (and Tay/Will for that matter as far as limiting TOs), we should be able to exploit that often Friday afternoon. Their perimeter defense and pressure may limit our looks from 3, but I suspect Gip/JO could both have big games inside.

Offensively the spread 4 wide and play a lot of 2 man games leading to drive. To be fair, that has been a weakness of ours defensively. We'll need some solid minutes from JO, especially on defense. If he plays well, he could approach a triple double because I think he'll have a ton of block opportunities, chances to score, and oboards. Fortunately for us, playing small ourselves helps us match-up better than a lot of teams would against them.

La Salle will score some, but I highly doubt they can maintain the shooting they showed tonight. Plus, we provide a ton of match-up problems for them as much as they do against us. The last 4 games they've given up at least 1.09 points per possession and I see the Cats at least matching that.

Cats 78 - La Salle 63

Also, 6 guys played at least 30 minutes. With a day between games not as big of a deal, but we are tipping 40 hours after their game tonight ended, plus they had to fly out after their game tonight.

Butler and Nova they won at home and forced a bunch of TOs. They were actually outshot in both games.

VCU is the most impressive because they won at VCU. VCU shot 25% from 3 and the bigger surprise shot only 43% on 2s.

You're right _FAN, those wins don't count. Should we call the NCAA tournament committee and have them change La Salle's record so people don't get confused when it's showed?

Just giving context to those wins, but yes, La Salle has the ability to beat us and they are a solid team. I just don't think they will.

I thought JO could get a triple double going into the game.  If only he didn't sit so damn much in  the first half.
