Title: The JO-urney Continues; Big 12 #2 ADV
Post by: kso_FAN on March 15, 2013, 11:46:01 PM
1st   Pace   PPP   eFG%   TO%   OR%   FTR
KSU   28   1.00   34.4%   17.8%   47.8%   21.9%
Opp   28   0.82   37.5%   28.5%   47.6%   21.4%

2nd   Pace   PPP   eFG%   TO%   OR%   FTR
KSU   36   1.11   60.4%   24.9%   21.4%   58.3%
Opp   36   0.94   32.3%   16.6%   31.8%   45.2%

Total   Pace   PPP   eFG%   TO%   OR%   FTR
KSU   65   1.05   45.5%   21.6%   37.8%   37.5%
Opp   65   0.88   34.7%   21.6%   39.5%   33.9%

After a dismal beginning, the Cats finally got offense rolling in the 2nd half with an impressive 60% eFG% (+28%!) shooting performance. OSU ended with a slight margin on oboards, but the best eFG% defensive performance of the season (2nd to only UT last night) carried the Cats to a comfortable win.

The biggest difference in a week was efficiency from Angel and Rod, plus an inspired performance from JO. Others played well, but those 3 were not going to let us lose.

Now on to another opportunity against the Hawks.

dare we say the defense is "peaking" at the right time?

Really happy about this game.  A slow start like that will doom us tomorrow though.

Shane couldn't get untracked. Need him to hit open 3s tomorrow.
Also would be nice if we can get the breakout baskets we had in the second half. Had a lot to do with out eFG%.

They mentioned we had 16 fast break points at one point late in the game, that would be the best we've had all year. The official stats aren't out yet to confirm.

If jo plays this many minutes in Stillwater, we win handily.

Lets say it how it is, Ford got worked by oscar.  The doubling on Nash early set the tone.  Angel fought his ass off. Rod wouldn't be denied.  Great win.

Feel like we got out o-boarded in the second half because we were trying to get back on D more since they couldn't score in the half court. Kind of a misleading stat, but holy cow.... Angel from that spot!!

Nash was completely eliminated. Great to see.

Must've watched the dunk highlight reel from Stillwater and made some nice adjustments.

JO was great, but I think you are overstating his impact.

Tonight was about Angel and Rod combining to score 42 points on 28 shots instead of 32 points on 31 shots.

Nope. Our overall offense tonight was about the same as it was in Stillwater, but the defense was much, much better. because of Jo's minutes.

True, shouldn't downplay the defensive impact that JO brought tonight (A 25% improvement in defensive eFG% is a ton).

I guess they should have taken him for a cortisone shot down in Stillwater too.

kstate didn't lose by much.  jhr could have easily had enough impact to alter the outcome.  obviously, art and mcgruder shooting way better would have too.  or any other player playing awesome.  but the coaches have a little more control over how many minutes jhr gets, so it's a logical variable to consider.

Yeah, I overstated Angel/Rod offense (though I don't think it insignificant) and understated JO's defense. Though one of my original points was that JO played great.

Updated the stats in the first post with those based on the official numbers. As usual boards and TOs were off by a few, but gametracker also missed a shot for each team somewhere.

Also:
PTs in Paint-OSU 22, KSU 28.
PTs off TOs-OSU 14, KSU 11.
2nd chance-OSU 17, KSU 12.
Fast break-OSU 9, KSU 16.

Have you seen the size of those needles?  I'd faint.  I'm sure the players have someone following them around who could take time out of their busy day of looking in trash baskets to make sure JO gets the juice.

JO had a hugely impactful stretch in the 2nd half capped by that save on the press break--to which I admittedly and readily fistpumped.

But this game was decided the minute Rod decided Smart really was a little bitch who needed to be sent home. Then Angel picked up where Rod left off.

Spradling can still sit the f down though. Clanking everything from deep, 3 TOs (if you count eating the 5-second call), allowing Forte to get loose a few times (luckily he only cashed in once)....someone remind me what he brings to the table over Tay, please.

I remember it being pretty hilarious when teams would try to press us w/ Pullen and Clemente. Pretty much a guaranteed 2 points for EMAW.

All u need to know about our defense =

Tonight ... OK St got 7 dunk/layups/tip-ins

Last Saturday ..... After we took the 50-41 lead,  OK St got 6 dunk/layup/tip-ins in the next 3:55 to tie the game at 53

Other thoughts ---
A good defensive effort and Osu playing poorly and having foul issues........ was countered with our own bad offensive perfomance and thus only a 5 pt halftime lead.   However, we did exactly what we had to do, which was gain control by the under 12 timeout.   We did and our lead was 13

We ended the game with 14 TOs.  Fortuneatly for us, 7 of those were in the final 10 minutes and our lead never got below 8

yeah DC would make that decision look pretty sophomoric.

Also just remember when Wooly teams would get the full court pressure (https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsmileys.emoticonsonly.com%2Femoticons%2Fw%2Fwetting_pants-2150.gif&hash=c8fe55fecaf6ef57207de67d09e5c05b65ff6a84)

I don't remember us controlling a game to the point that the other team tried pressing us.

OSU actually has a pretty good press defense.

I do remember Frank pissing away some leads at the end of games. That was pretty common.

The final 25:45 of the game=

KState 62.5% eFG
Osu 30.0% eFG

KState  1.19 ppp
Osu 0.85 ppp

Rod/Angel 37 pts
Mr Flop/ Brown 16 pts

We were down 17-12 and OK St was in the midst of a 15-5 run.
Kstate scored 10 pts in the next 4 possessions and went on a quick 10-0 run.   Tay' s 3 capped the run

We controlled the game the rest of the way.   We had quick little 6-0 run to start 2nd half and another 9-2 to push the lead to 13 and the game was never in doubt

Not sure a crippled Jo on the court would have helped. All we really needed was a fairly officiated game and ksu would have won by 10

Key to game today:  don't have our two post players dq'd on 10 phantom foul calls

Visited the orange site last night. 36-page game thread bitching about refs and, near the end, civil war on whether or not Smart is a flopper. Some absolute denial, some acknowledgement and some (reasonable, IMO) "why not, he's good at it and gets rewarded for it."
