I don't know if i'll be crying more during the last tunnel dance with Martavious, or when Rodney kisses the floor for his final exit from the bram. It's a real toss-up for me. Either way....lots of  followed by lots of :D.
-
I wonder how McGruder will be remembered. Is he the most loved Wildcat of recent era besides Jake?

I love Rod. If Rod were a song he'd be "I'll Be Around" by The Spinners.
-
Rod is not a talker, he pretty much just plays basketball. Maybe he should be more of one. But because he's not, he goes a bit unnoticed compared to some of the past guys I think.

Yeah, playing college ball for free would have been way more beneficial than playing professional ball for millions of dollars.

I love Rod. If Rod were a song he'd be "I'll Be Around" by The Spinners.
DEAD ON. Makes me weepy just thinking about it.
Angel will be Chan Chan by Buena Vista Social Club.

We have been truly blessed as K-State basketball fans for the past 6 seasons. I was lucky enough to be on campus for a majority of them and experience our program's resurgence. For me, Jake and Rodney are the my most loved cats players during that time. Big time players who were completely emaw and were heart and soul leaders of our teams. :emawkid:

No you didn't. I love Jamar, but he was way too infuriatingly inconsistent to put on my top 5 list.

Rod's in my top 5. Ever since that dunk against Texas his freshman year I knew he was going to be a treat

Wonder if he'll ever get a shot in the NBA?
I didn't know that he was granted Georgian citizenship and played on their national team.

Until Saturday night, that was the most infamous shot of his career.

I love Rodney for who he is. He's not Jake. He's not Jamar. He's not Denis. He's Rodney.

The older you get, the tougher it becomes to put together your top 5/10 etc. He's sorta a Top 15.
Guards: Jake, Clemente, Angel, Beane, Hatcher
Wings: Rod, Cartier, Samuels, Hoskins, Walker
Posts: Beasley, Massey, Davis, JO, Kelly
Yeah, Samuels/Hoskins/Walker weren't really wings probably.

In order:
Jake
Mike
Rod
Denis
Bill
Sixth Man: CK
Honorable Mention: Jamar
Side note: it’s kind of shows just how awful ksu basketball has been that any “good” players over the past 25 years have come from the past 5/6 years. The other side of the coin is that it’s pretty cool to have truly experienced it as an adult rather than having to try to remember bits and pieces of Richmond/Henson as a young teen/child.

Could Angel be on this list one day?! :ksu: :ksu:

Move it over to a new thread then. This thread is about being sad about our seniors, and how maybe when we think about it something gets in our eyes and we have to walk away some people don't see us.

“The first time I saw them, J.O. (Henriquez) had on red, white and blue long socks with a bucket hat on,” Irving recalled Monday. “He had a polo shirt on and he had this funny, deep voice, and I thought this guy had to be a tall, goofy fellow.
:D
“Rodney didn't say a word. He said, ‘What's up?’ and then was just quiet. I thought I was the quiet one. We always joke with Rodney that the first few months you never saw Rodney except for practice. He’d go back to the dorm and was nowhere to be found.”
For the record, Henriquez took exception to Irving's description of that old bucket hat as “ridiculous.”
“I'm from New York and New Yorkers rock the bucket hat,” he said. “I still have it, but I don't wear it anymore. If it gets a little hot I might throw it on to go out and get the mail, but I don't wear it out.”
Henriquez might offer it to Irving to help out what he considers a problem area.
“I get on Martavious about his hairline — it's receded more and more,” he said.

It was a blast talking to Martavious, Jordan and Rodney one last time before a game at Bramlage. You can tell these guys are extremely close and have lots of memories together. Here are some of the quotes I couldn't fit into today's story...
MARTAVIOUS IRVING:
On his first impression of Manhattan...
"I was like, 'This town is extremely smaller than I thought it would be.' It was the summer time so it was really hot. I was hoping it would stay like this. Then it got cold, I saw snow for the first time. I had to warm up to all the people and being away from my mom, home and all of that so it was just a transition."
On meeting Rodney and JO for the first time...
"The first time I saw them, JO had on some red, white and blue long socks with a bucket hat on. He had a Polo shirt and he had this funny, deep voice and I was like, 'this guy has to be a tall, goofy fellow.' And then Rodney didn't say a word. He said 'What's up?' and then was quiet. I thought I was the quiet one because everyone said on my visit I was quiet. We always joked with Rodney. We always said that the first few months we never saw Rodney except for practice because you go back to the dorm and he was nowhere to be found for some reason. Those were my first impressions of them. Funny ones and I'm glad that it went that way. Those are some special guys."
On JO's bucket hats...
"I really feel like he has two or three because I think he has a Gucci one, a Polo one. Jordan is a special type of fashion guy. It doesn't matter what it is, if he likes it, he'll wear it."
On who will be attending tonight's game...
"My mom, grandmother, aunt, uncle and girlfriend... My sophomore year we played Florida and all of them came. This is their first time being in Kansas, period. This will be their first game in Bramlage... It's always great to have family to support you here. My mom always supported me from where she was at through the TV screen and I am just glad to have her here in person."
On training someone to do the tunnel dance...
"I haven't, but hopefully it continues. We've been talking about it as a team who should start it, who should continue it and all of that. We'll have to see next year."
On who he would endorse for tunnel dance...
"Probably Shane or Angel.... Not better than me. It's close, but they can dance."
On wanting the tunnel dance to continue...
"I do. It's fun. It's not about me really. It's about the team and about us getting excited. It's about the crowd. We want it to be the best 6th man in the country when we play against whoever. Hopefully it can keep going."
On coming to K-State...
"No matter what happens to me in life, I will always thank Frank Martin and Brad Underwood for recruiting me to come here because they gave me a chance. With my injuries, a lot of schools backed off. And they stuck with it. I finished my senior year in high school strong and I'm just glad they did recruit me."
RODNEY MCGRUDER:
On his favorite game at Bramlage...
"I would say when we beat Texas when they were unbeaten. We knocked them off my freshman year. That was a big time game for us."
On watching the highlight of his buzzer beater...
No, I didn't watch the highlight. I didn't watch the highlight. There's still a lot of season left. You can't celebrate yet. Maybe when the season is over with, check everything out and see how my college career panned out."
On hitting a buzzer beater before...
"I hit a buzzer beater in like middle school. I hit one when I went to play in Estonia two summers ago, but that was the last time I hit one... It felt good."
On being happy with his celebration..
"I didn't really get the chance to celebrate. I skipped a little bit. I was happy with it. I'm just happy that we won.... It just came on me. It's nothing I planned or been practicing on if I hit a big shot. It just came. I was just excited."
On Martavious having his hands raised as the ball was in the air...
"Someone actually sent me a picture of Martavious with his hands up and the ball is still up in the air. At first, I didn't believe him. I said, 'Tay, get outta here. You waited until it went in and celebrated.' But after I saw the picture, he was telling the truth."
JORDAN HENRIQUEZ:
On his his first impression of Manhattan...
"The first time I got here, there wasn't anyone here. There were four other freshmen who came here with me. We stayed in a form by ourselves. It was a little scary being in Manhattan, Kansas in a dorm with nobody else in the form with us. But I've grown on it. I love it."
On his ridiculous bucket hat collection...
"Ridiculous? I mean, I'm from New York. New York rocks the bucket hats. It was a Polo hat. I still have it. I don't wear it anymore. But it's Manhattan. It might get a little hot out and I might throw it on and walk outside to get the mail. Other than that, I don't wear it."
On his relationship with the other two...
"It's strong with Rodney and Martavious. I know with Martavious, I've grown on his hairline. So make sure he hears that tomorrow."
On some memorable moments on the road...
"The first NCAA Tournament. We were winning and winning and going to different arenas, just star struck, just sitting around and seeing Jake, Curt, Denis and all of those guys get the media attention and thinking, 'Wow, that could be us some day.' It was fun. I'll never forget moments lie that, and moments in Bramlage, also. I could go on forever."
On memorable moments at home...
"Beating KU after the shot at Colorado with Rodney. We came back aggressive and regrouped and put a hurting on KU. Other than that, we've had a lot of wins at Bramlage. We beat a lot of No. 1 teams in the country during my time here. A lot of those, I remember."
On who will be at the game...
"My mother, my brother, my uncle, my aunt, which are my mother's brother and sister coming down. It definitely will be nice, especially after last week. It's a great getaway."
On playing well in front of his mom...
"Yeah, I do. She tells me that a lot. I guess I do. I kind of own up to that."
On being a mama's boy...
"I used to be. Not anymore. She still wants me to be, but I'm 23 years old. I still show some signs of it."
On what his family is going to think about Bramlage...
"They're going to be star struck. My uncle actually played college basketball. He played for Coach Calhoun a while back at Northeastern so I'm pretty sure he knows what a crowd looks like."
On Frank Martin....
"Frank has been a father figure in my life. My grandmother passed away and he called me that same night and sent his condolences, and so did the whole coaching staff, because they had a chance to meet her. I appreciate Frank. I know I'll have a relationship with him for the rest of my life."
-
I just allowed myself to think of Angel's senior night and immediately slapped my own face.
-
No love for Stew from anyone? I feel like his ability and demeanor made him like Rod except he was willing to be a little silly in the tunnel.
