Higher ed research funding is going to be severely mumped by this. That indirectly impacts me. Otherwise, nothing.

I suppose I'll miss being told about all the things I'm going to miss by our fear mongering propagandist in chief.  That was at least good comedy, in that it was so pathetic.

Aren't the cuts across the board?  As in everyone is equally mumped?

If this had been anybody's idea other than Obama, it would be the worst idea ever.

It's a pretty horrible way to operate, really.

I've decided I don't actually miss this, so I'm back to nothing.

True, and I can't come up with any reason for Obama to turn down the senates offer to let him choose how the cuts would be made, other than he doesn't want any more ties to it. Maybe he still plans to blame congress for it during the 2014 elections?

Oh, Congress deserves their share of the blame, as well.

furloughs aren't scheduled to set in for another six weeks. there are a lot of dod employees that live in mhk and most are about ready to get paid 20 percent less than they currently make. that's potentially a pretty big deal to mhk whether some of you idiots realize it or not.

In terms of my neck of the woods, this is not all bad. It is REALLY hard to cut dead weight around here. Gimme five years and lets reassess.

The private sector has been dealing with pay cuts since 2007. Its unfortunate.

yes and if there was a private employer ten miles away from mhk that employed several hundred mhkers and it was about ready to start paying them all twenty percent less and stop hiring more of them as well as start releasing some of the ones that currently worked there then i would say that it would affect me because i live in mhk. not real hard to do the math on this one genius.

Are you going to be allowed to cut the dead weight, or will you just have to pay everybody less money, effectively pushing your good employees to find better jobs?

The latter. The shitty people can't get another job and don't want to leave anyway. The good people don't like working with shitty people and don't like 20% pay cuts.

Answer your own rough ridin' questions. I'm cutting dead weight and eff anyone who wants to object. Maybe I'll regret it, but you gotta make hay when the sun shines, right?

That's good to hear. Are the people who are going the 20% cut route only doing that because they don't want to lay anybody off? Are some agencies allowed to turn cuts into layoffs while others are not? I don't completely understand how this works, so it's always good to hear from somebody who does.

Quote
The Obama administration denied an appeal for flexibility in lessening the sequester’s effects, with an email this week appearing to show officials in Washington that because they already had promised the cuts would be devastating, they now have to follow through on that.

In the email sent Monday by Charles Brown, an official with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service office in Raleigh, N.C., Mr. Brown asked “if there was any latitude” in how to spread the sequester cuts across the region to lessen the impacts on fish inspections.

He said he was discouraged by officials in Washington, who gave him this reply: “We have gone on record with a notification to Congress and whoever else that ‘APHIS would eliminate assistance to producers in 24 states in managing wildlife damage to the aquaculture industry, unless they provide funding to cover the costs.’ So it is our opinion that however you manage that reduction, you need to make sure you are not contradicting what we said the impact would be.”

It's really vague and really rushed, which always leads to good decisions. I'm young, mobile and have highly marketable job skills, so I'm doing what I think is best and am not really worried. That said, my office is more sheltered than the fish guy. I'm using the opportunity to cut more than I have to by cutting what I need to but couldn't before. Do you know how hard it is to get rid of a mediocre govt employee? I'm not wasting an opportunity. When crap settles down in a month or two, we can bring on better talent.

Yeah.  It was a terrible idea, and it's not the right way to do things.  These manufactured, up-to-the last minute crises are getting old quick.  We need to get rid of the two term limit for President and bring back Bill Clinton.
