1st half shootout, 2nd half grinder, Cats win. Rod (ROD!) and Angel did their thing, but huge defensive performance in the 2nd half holding BU to .9 ppp and 35% shooting. Dboarding was an issue at times and some missed shots at the rim, but Cats come home winners and STILL in 1st.
Enjoy it.

Really happy to see the Cats figure out defending Austin in this game after a decent start. Shane did well, but not as good, for being so undersized.

Yeah, much better. Biggest issue was Shane trying to keep Austin off the offensive boards and he finished with 7.
I was very concerned in the stretch where Gip had a silly TO on the outlet pass, missed a bunny, then Shane gave up the oboard to Austin.
But we overcame it. Big win.

With Cats being +4 on To margain, OR at almost 40%, and shooting over 40% from 3pt...u would think we would win.
We did but it wasn't easy.
We led 18:11 of the 2nd half. Baylor didn't even have the lead for a minute in that half.
** 3rd time this conf year Kstate has won the game on its final possession. WV, Ou, and now BU.

Bottom of the boxscore stats:
PTs in paint: Cats 28-26
PTs off TOs: Cats 16-6
2nd chance: Bears 15-10
Fast break: Cats 4-2

Never would have guessed the pts in paint one

Me either. In the second half we quit settling for jumpers and attacked the paint .

Just watched on DVR. Unless it was said during a fast-forwarded free throw, Bob Knight nor the play-by-play guy ever mentioned Austin was matched up against Shane. No talk about Shane playing out of position at the 4, no questioning why they didn't attack that mismatch more (or why they didn't notice Austin was matched up with Angel on that one possession).
I know it's a given that Bob Knight is terrible, but he was especially bad last night.

Knight did mention the height discrepancy late in the game when Austin was getting seemingly every board

I came away with the impression that Gip had his worst game in our recent stretch. True or false?
-
Baylor's disappointing season and the meaningless of Jackson's stats is explained with that points in the paint figure.
Hope they get it figured out for senior day.

yeah, almost cost us the game. fortunately we went back to what we're good at in time to salvage the win.

He hinted at it once when Austin came up on a high ball screen. When he realized Shane was up instead of JO he stopped his talking point about bigs needing to sag back.

I refuse to believe that Knight was ever a good basketball coach after he kept saying that K-State needed to try to pound it inside more. That has to be absolutely embarrassing for him.

To be fair, Gip got a bunch of good (great) looks and simply missed them. Granted, Baylor's length had something to do with it, but he didn't have to change his shot or anything. I really liked that we tried to attack them, though I would've taken more 3s too. Still, 30% of our shots were 3s; not quite our average of 35% 3PA%, but close.
-
Gip had some great hook looks but seemed to over estimate Austin and Jefferson's jumping ability because he turned his hook looks into fade away hooks and obviously they all fell short. I think their height and leaping got in his head a little, imo.

This is why good teams sometimes lose to Baylor, they give them more credit than they're due. Just assume that they are all FPs and you'll dominate, because they ARE FPs.

kstate shot 13 3s in the first half, just 4 in the second half, with at least 2 of those being in the last few minutes. that's just not enough, and i think it contributed to our decreased efficiency in the 2nd.

I don't disagree.
I liked the looks we got for Gip though, but certainly another 4-6 attempts from 3 would've been better for the way we usually run offense. 12.5% 3PA% (2nd half) is really low for us, especially when we were only 39% on 2s.
-
After his poor first half shooting it seemed like Rodney turned down a lot of open looks from outside in the 2nd--except for the one that mattered, of course!--opting instead to drive or dish.

I am not worried about Rod, but he is only 4-21 3pt last 6 games.

He's also 1-1 in his last 1 attempts :)

I enjoyed his monologue on the perils of "handplay" and his constant description of free throws as "long and to the right".
