Title: Can Butler Beat The Cuse?
Post by: SkinnyBenny on March 24, 2010, 09:41:41 AM
HBBIQers and LBBIQers should both respond.  Whatchoo think?  Who would you rather our doberkhatz stomp into the ground after we stomp Xavier into the ground?

Most analysts seem to think Butler is going to be launching 50 3-pointers in this game ... and yet they also say that whether the team hits those 3s isn't key.  That seems like utter nonsense to me.  If Butler goes 3-crazy, they better hit a good percentage, or they will get destroyed.

I'd rather play Butler because they are a worse team.  Unfortunately this will hurt them against Syracuse.

I'm honest.  BYU scared the sh*t out of me, way more than cuse or X.

Yeah, this is pretty dumb.  Syracuse definately has the talent advantage and will cause Butler all kinds of defensive match-up problems, but the 3 points shot could be the equalizer.  Butler has several guys that can hit from outside, though they aren't a spectacular shooting team by any means.  But if they have a hot night, this game will come down to the last minute, and I think it helps Butler that Syracuse is a zone team.

If they shoot 50 3 pointers and hit half of them, that's 75 points (math lesson for the day).  Assume they shoot a few free throws and get a trash offensive rebound under the basket or two, they easily score 100.  Butler will win if they score 100.

Weird thing about the Cuse Zags game was how many points Zags scored in the paint.  Also heard Boeheim basically say they want people shooting a lot of 3's.

IMO, if Butler tries to shoot a bunch of 3's over Cuse's 6'5"+ players, they will lose.  If they run clock and pass the ball around like a white-boy mid major team and get a bunch of white-boyesque 10-15 foot jump shots (any layups or dunks are bonus) inside the zone with <10 ticks on the shot clock they'll win.  I think they can defend well enough to keep Rautins and Johnson from going ape-hullabaloo like they did against Zags (whom don't play 5 minutes of defense).

The 'Cuse bigs are pretty sucky, we'd board like mad over them, specially cuz they play zone.  The problem is Rautins and Johnson would shoot right over the top of anyone we have to guard them.  Would be a weird matchup and high scoring

Oh, I don't disagree.  Just saying lots of "experty" types think Butler goes bombs away in this one.  The temptation may be too great.

It probably depends what Syracuse gives them in the zone.  Like us, Butler is very good at drawing fouls, so they'll probably try to drive the creases in the zone and kick, or get it to the bigs for inside out looks after they get the zone to collapse.  Then attacking the rim in spots, trying to draw fouls and get to the FT line.  I don't expect them to shoot early 3s, but as was said, they'll look to get shots late in the shot clock most possessions after working the zone.

I want to play Cuse. I want to play the #1 seed and kill them. My guess is JamSam will have another crap game against X then just dominate Cuse the next game, going 5-5 from 3.

I'm actually kind of glad our posts haven't come through with a big offensive game yet - we haven't needed it.  Would much rather JamSam or CKelly save their 20-point outburst for the big dogs.

I'm telling ya white-boyesque mid range jumpers are the key to this zone (and virtually ever other zone).  Butler has that white-boy flava.

'Cuse will give them the tre, question is whether Butler will take the bait

this.  I think were the best team left on the west side of the bracket (west & midwest).

Wally Judge roaming the baseline against the zone will be the 'Cuse-Killer... will open up the free throw line for Curtis & JamSam and the perimeter for Jake y Denis.

I think you could make a case for Syracuse being our equal or close to it (which is what I think), but you're pretty much right.  Win the next two and we're more than likely in the national championship game.
