about 20 minutes ago, there was an explosion and it felt like the windows of my apartment were going to shatter, and I looked out the window and saw that JJ's was engulfed in flames. Scary stuff.

Supposedly a car ran into the building, causing a gas leak and subsequent explosion. Hope people were out of there before the explosion.
-
Clams?!
-
eff
-
Watching it on the news. Huge fire. Huge. Scary stuff considering the amount of traffic, business, and population immediately there.
-
Black smoke everywhere. Holy crap
-
CLAMS!
-
Damn hope everyone is ok.
-
-
Would have been pretty busy about 5:30 but maybe folks bugged out before it went up.
-
...clams?
-
not sounding good
-
Was walking my dog in prairie village and heard the boom clearly, sounded like a fort riley round.

From KSHB website:
A woman who lives on the same block of JJ's said she smelled smoke about 15 minutes before the fire broke out.
One viewer tweeted us that he felt his house shake from the explosion. He lives at 57th & Locust.
Read more: http://www.kshb.com/dpp/news/local_news/car-hits-gas-line-sparks-explosion-on-country-club-plaza#ixzz2LOaB8L9c
the former gives hope that most had time to get out.
The latter gives pause as to size, as the fire is at 48th street and the guy felt his house shake at 57th.

CLAMS!
:ohno: :ohno: (ftp://:ohno: :ohno:)

Friend said it smelled like gas pretty bad a block away when she got home 5 min before explosion, then her apartment shook violently. Hopefully people realized not to stay in JJ's if it smelled that potent.

WTF? So they kept working after a car crashed into the building?
-
Channel 9 just said a waitress left work feeling ill because of a heavy gas odor.
Lucky.
That said, how does anyone let a strong gas odor go on long enough for someone to complain and leave early. I mean, if you work in a kitchen and smell that heavy of a gas odor, it should ring some major alarm bells.

I'd be leary of accounts in the immediate aftermath of it.

It will be interesting to hear how this whole thing went down. My wife went to take out the dog just a couple minutes before the explosion, and took our dog down to the corner of 48th and Belleview and said it smelled like gas REALLY bad. It'd be hard to think that anyone would have stayed in that building.

KMBC just reported there could be more gas explosions and they pushed back everyone. Be safe everyone.

at least. their wine collection was incredible- no joke, bottles cost up to $5k, some might be ok though because they stored the big bottles underground in a bunker across the street.

Im a lieutenant/paramedic on an engine that runs an avg of 15 alarms a day. That's approximately 10 hours of work plus another 5-7 to write reports. Plus allof the other misc duties i have to complete each day.
but yeah, i don't do anything.
-
Also was my first fire as a lieutenant. Holy eff...
what can you tell us about it? here's what i'm guessing happened- the explosion occurred directly in front of JJ's, from the gas line that was broken. the explosion broke the front pane glass windows that covered the entire front of the restaurant effectively torching the inside of the dining room and the bar which went up like a tinder box. ceiling collapsed almost immediately. no front walls (all glass) left to fall in. i'm assuming the KCFD pushed in the West brick wall along SW Trafficway/Belleview?

Oh man if the construction company that nobody wanted down there ended up causing the explosion, the lawsuits will be Crown Center walkway-esque
Crown Center was a design flaw on the engineers end. The plans they drew up showed the walkway couldn't withstand the weight and they ignored it or didn't see it, that's why they got sued. Someone gave their word as a professional that the design was good to go and it wasn't.
Unless there was a flaw with the gas company's installation of the gas line and a car crash caused the leak, I don't think it even matters if they called or not, they won't be held liable. If it was leaking before hand that's another story. As far as I know, utility companies are not responsible for anything besides "wear and tear" especially if damage happens that quickly.
Yeah, it reminds you of Crown Center because they are both tragedies in Kansas City. One was a series of dumbasses being lazy, this sounds like a straight up accident.
On another note, how'd you like to be the person who crashed your car into the building and made it go boom? T's and P's for everyone.

It sounds like it was a backhoe that was just digging.
-
Yeah, I'm reading a few reports that say a contractor was digging and knocked it loose but reported it this afternoon and warned people in the restaurant. Those say nothing about a car crash.
Other reports say a car crash caused the explosion but don't mention much about the contractor.
Those lines are pretty far underground for a reason, I doubt the car crash had much to do with it. Either way, it would be on the contractor not the gas company.

Yeah not to derail this thread, but yeah, it was a shitty design to begin with. The two channels facing each other instead of back to back was Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) (still would have worked), and the design required a nut to be threaded like 20 feet, so the fabricator changed the design in the shop drawing stage. Engineer didn't catch it during shop drawing review. The change resulted in twice the load going to the shittily designed connection. Combo of the two resulted in the disaster.

they closed the kitchen and turned off their appliances, but were still serving drinks, because they were told it was safe. until they were told it wasn't safe, and then it blew up.

Engineer didn't catch it during shop drawing review. The change resulted in twice the load going to the shittily designed connection. Combo of the two resulted in the disaster.
Nailed it!

Yeah, was doing my best to try to differentiate between a gas leak and a walkway collapsing without engineering it up. You guys did a better job than I did. Although, I thought the designer had been notified of the change and knew that it wouldn't bear the load.

I'm about 1/2 mile from JJs. I thought the wife had slammed the front door really hard or something. It literally shook all our windows.
Also, dumbass johnny rowlands was hoovering non-stop above my house at 5AM this morning :chainsaw: :chainsaw: :chainsaw:
Crazy scene.

Kinda true, kinda not true.

With a blast like that, I could see someone getting knocked out by the explosion and not being conscious during the fire. :frown:

The explosion was so powerful. The fire was so hot. The smoke so thick. Whoever this was felt no pain and unfortunately is probably largely disfigured.

"[Second cousin] miraculously survived the explosion & was released to go home from the hospital with lacerations & cuts from glass & debris. The employees had just told the public to vacate due to the odor of gas & within seconds, the explosion occurred. She was behind the bar with her back to the 14' tall glass wall filled with liquor bottles which blew up & fell. She was blown out of her shoes . . . She had to crawl out from the debris & smoke to get out. She was able to walk & a kind soul took her & another person to St. Luke's (they didn't wait for an ambulance). They had to cut her undergarments off of her because they were so impacted with glass & had to remove glass from her hair & head. I believe she had some stitches done in her ankle area."
That was on Phog. Pretty crazy that someone could survive that and be out of the hospital already.

Hate to be insensitive but if only 2 people died that would be pretty incredible, considering the severity of the blast/fire. You could quote me a much higher casualty count and I would believe it without question.

Agreed, first thing I thought when I got home was there are going to be over 10 fatalities
-
I thought the count was going to be huge. They way they originally presented it made it sound like all was normal until a car crashed into the building then suddenly blew up. I figured all this at 6pm on the plaza would equate to an entire dinner crowd being T'ed and P'ed nationwide today.

I heard that to shut of the main they had to bust a hole in the pavement and actually pinch the pipe rather than being able to use a shut off valve.

Jasper's staff are giving up shifts to the JJ's staff. I think I'll go down there on Saturday night and drop a big tip.

About 8 a.m. Tuesday, Heartland Midwest LLC gave notice that it planned to use a trenchless horizontal boring machine near JJ’s to install fiber-optic cable underground. Heartland was working for Time Warner Cable and notified Missouri One-Call, a nonprofit organization set up by utilities to help excavators and utilities dig in compliance with safety laws.
I worked for that company for a summer. :horrorsurprise:

1. They are f'ed
2. the permit just says city hall approves it, it has nothing to do with One Call or MGE locating the utility.
The permit wouldn't have prevented this.

MGE attorneys stopped by my apt to ask questions about the explosion. They know they are about to get fisted.

MGE attorneys stopped by my apt to ask questions about the explosion. They know they are about to get fisted.
Yeah, even if they did locate correctly, there will be some ball pain coming their way for not being able to shut it off in a timely manner or by reasonable method. Makes me think their infrastructure was neglected and not up to current code. I mean, they had to bust a hole and pinch the actual pipe, rather than going a block or two down and accessing a shut off valve via access point. I am not fully up to date on this stuff, but pretty sure shut offs are required pretty frequently and pinching a pipe is never the answer. Imagine what could have happened if the pinching of the pipe was botched? JJ's already on fire, new gas leak intentionally caused a block away and new fire caused...
No winners here.
-
What's scary is that the pinch seems to be their SOP in this situation. :sdeek:
Do these folks even do any sort of risk analysis? If not, that's negligence right there.
-
Good lord. Fisted is right.

I spent some time with Jimmy, the owner over the weekend and he said he wanted to rebuild. Who knows though, we were both pretty PAK'd and I'm sure sorting through insurance, etc will be a long drawn out process.

The CV space is pretty small, but I can't imagine it has any less tables than the old JJs space. JJs was pretty small. Ingredient space would be nice too.
-
it would be about the same size as old JJ's minus the bar. and that's where the problem lies with me. the bar and patio at JJ's was my favorite in KC and something that couldn't be recreated at CV. also, the kitchen at coal vines is roughly the size of a 737's bathroom. regardless- it sounds like he's looking somewhere else now, i'll ask around this weekend and find out. come to think about it for a sec, maybe the CV space is still in play. someone ITK A+ source mentioned it to me a couple weeks ago.

not very interesting really, but ok. i've been to a bunch of other cities in the US where i've either walked or driven past them and visually seen them with my eyes.

Bunch of other cities, eh? Did you stud out?

Seriously, there can't be more than 2 dozen porno theatres left in the whole US and midtown has two of them.
Do they even make porno on film anymore, or do they just re-run sweaty hairy 80s porn?

I can't imagine needing a porn theatre these days. Everything is in the palm of your hand (cell phone) now.

I'd heard long time ago that osco might be whole foods. Not gonna happen, but point is osco is fn huge. big enough to be a grocery store.
whole foods is going in near 51st and Main. they'd die a quick death in midtown. also, midtown is ok in my book, tower tavern, velvet dog, sol cantina, there's nothing wrong with these places.
and jfc pete not knowing what crossroads is.

The places you describe occupy about a contiguous 1000 square yards of this "midtown" you refer to, correct?

Seriously, there can't be more than 2 dozen porno theatres left in the whole US and midtown has two of them.
Do they even make porno on film anymore, or do they just re-run sweaty hairy 80s porn?
There are no porn theaters in Midtown. Lol. WTF.
-
that's weird, velvet dog was always packed when i've been there.

It was only a matter of time for velvet.

austin has more porn theaters than chain restaurants

velvet dog is just being renamed and re-done, same ownership. they're going to have 7000 different whiskeys or something stupid like that.
midtown is rough ridin' great, especially hyde park you dipshit. "herp derp crime and drugs and i have no idea because i don't live there" i mean there are just butt loads of awesome 100+ year old 3BR houses that have been remodeled and you can buy them for under $150k. it will absolutely explode in the next 5 years with young homeowners looking to avoid the endless beige nightmare. troost is the next street that is going to be revitalized with new businesses. have you seen what is happening on Armour?
i have lived in Southmoreland for 2+ years and i love it.
also i love coal vines.

Don't forget Penn Valley community college. That's a place you would recognize! LOSER!

i have seen lights on in the osco at night a few times recently, looked like somebody was doing something in there. seems like such a great space, it would be great if somebody would take it over and get that clock back to working

Very fuzzy on the details, but I was plazapak'n with somebody here, chicat maybe, and 'clams called and was wanting us to come to JJ's that neither of us had heard of. Everyone was pak'd and we thought he was saying KJ's and I suspected he was at his home that he'd nicknamed KJ's for the aggieville bar. We're at his front door trying to get a hold of him and he calls and we finally realize he's at JJ's not far away. Go there and had 2 or 3 cheese pizzas ordered one at a time.
It had to have been during Cats football season because we were singing Fire & Ice and showing strangers the youtube video on my phone. Maybe one of the Farmageddon weekends.
-
The should make the basement exactly like it was when Reverse had that spot.
Speaking of Farmageddon weekends, the guy who secured Pete, LSOC and I's tickets in parking lot for one years earlier pissed on the bar in Reverse.

I love the Hyde Park area. Like you said, it's packed with awesome homes under $150K. But, there's a reason that the homes are under $150K. Most people, especially people with kids, won't live there. And, yes, the statistics will show that crime rates are higher the closer you get the Troost/Paseo corridor. And my best friend and girlfriend live in HP. I've spent plenty of time in that neighborhood. Great character. wouldn't let my wife walk alone at night. it is what it is. I'd feel a lot more comfortable further west in Southmoreland - which is also a really cool neighborhood.
And, no, HP will not explode in the next five years. It's slowly going to gentrify, but you can read articles on its expected resurgence dating back to the early 2000s. It's going to be a slow turnaround.
-
Looks like it's going to remain on the plaza, in nearly the same location on the West side

Good for 'Clams. We should all have a mini Pak when it opens.

Neighborhood isn't brookside enough to justify the total lack of feasbile public schools.

i would just like to touch base here and lol at Belvis again:
-
is it weird that his gf lives there AND that he won't let his wife walk alone at night there? maybe/maybe not. maybe he won't let his wife walk alone at night there because she might bump into him and his gf? food for thought certainly. chew on that one you guys.
-
Rick daris I did not even catch that. Wow, this guy is a stone cold bastard.
-
I'm guessing his best friend's gf. smdh
-
If I had a wife and a gf, sounds like I would want my wife walking down that street at night. Right? :dunno:
-
maybe his best friend IS his gf? :dunno:
-
Maybe his gf is his best friends wife
-
lot of questions to be answered here.
-
One thing is for sure, and that is belvis knows nothing about Hyde Park and the millions of little babies in strollers that you see when you walk through it

Those are perps casing houses with fake babies.

HP is pretty much the same as it was a year ago. Whether it is was what Belvis said is up for interpretation. Still has no where that could be considered a school.
