Title: Good things from last night
Post by: mocat on February 12, 2013, 07:39:15 AM
* 2-0 lead from a Hot Rod breakaway dunk  :D
* Rod slam jam where he got fouled (wasn't called) by Rellaforde (sp?)  :sdeek:
* Angel raining threes all night long baby  :gocho:
* Gip being a cool customer not letting his boiling hot emotions take control in retaliation at that silly referee when he fouled out  :)
* Rod looks just like his dad! Adorable.  :D
* Will raining threes all night long baby  :gocho:
* Some times our defense looked great when KU would throw the ball out of bounds  :dunno:
* At one point early in the 2nd half when things were getting out of control, I looked in Angel's eye and saw the same fire that burns inside of Jacob "0" Pullen. He put the team on the back doo and started penetrating towards the basket on every possession, and good things started happening. I fell deeply and permanently in love with Angel tonight. Before tonight the love I had was peanuts compared to this you guys.

I thought it was interesting that oscar changed his gameplan so drastically from game 1. In Manhattan we tried to slow the game down (60 possessions) and shoot 3s. Last night we tried to speed the game up and attack inside. If oscar had switched plans, I'm not so sure we wouldn't have won in Manhattan and made the game closer in Lawrence.

I do sort of appreciate that our plan was to attack, both inside and in transition, even though it was doomed to fail. I'm sure oscar thought if we attacked and got on them early, then perhaps KU would be mentally weak and fall apart. Of course, attacking on offense didn't matter if we played as bad on defense as we did (and pretty much always do in Lawrence).

In any case, we got good games from Rod and Angel and I liked seeing both step up and try to carry the team, even though that burden was far too heavy last night.

Peggy Po:  the oscar is inflexible when players have 2 1st half fouls myth has been debunked

oscar smelled blood in the water with the 3-game losing streak, and seemed to want to avoid the "just bunker down and slow the game down" mentality that makes people pee down their legs in AFH. It backfired completely, in hindsight, but yeah _FAN I at least admire the attempt.

K-State fans can certainly say that oscar had a stupid game plan against KU yesterday. But IMHO you can't say that he coached "soft" in this game.

It looked like he got caught up in how bad KU looked their last 3 games and coached the game that way. We tried to push the ball in transition, we tried to attack the lane, and we tried to pressure the ball on defense more than we have in general. All of those backfired horribly.

But oscar's plan was clearly to attack KU in every way, and thinking they were vulnerable, maybe KU would cave if we got going early. Then KU went on their run and we had no options, because at that point we couldn't play a low possession game and shoot a bunch of 3s.

I just wish we would have bombed more threes. Don't care about pace, really, but I would prefer we let Angel take more chances in transition.

I agree. Early in the game Rod really struggled in transition. A lot.

This is the good things thread, man.

Let me just go ahead and say any gameplan that involves pounding it inside against KU is stupid.  That’s not hindsight at all.  It’s as if he watched all of their losses and was like “hey, ya know what will surprise them?  If we do exactly the opposite of what everyone did to beat them or almost beat them”.

Yes, he had a good gameplan the first game that just didn't work because the shots didn't fall. That doesn't mean you should try something different. There were a shitload of great looks in the first game.

positives:
- fouls were as even as you could hope for on the road, especially at AFH 17-19
- KSU out-shot KU from 3 (% wise), even in makes at 8
- macgruder was 7-14 for 20 points
- shot 73% from the line in a hostile environment
- shot 40% from the field against one of the best defenses in the country

negatives
- ku put their worst defender (tharpe) on macgruder for a lot of the game.
- got completely owned on the boards 39-20
- ESPN will be replaying withey's dunk for many years every time the two teams meet.
- gave up 83 points on a night when KU was 2-11 from the 3 (other than mclemore)

Angel last 3 gms is 7-15 from 3.  4 guys shooting at least 39%, so getting Angel drilling 3s is sweet

Last 5 gms-- We are 75.6 FT%, and have a 90-82 adv in FTAs

I don't usually don't complain about officiating but Withey flailing everytime he was within arms reach of Gip was flat out embarrassing. On the upside (for the good things thread), it shows how intimidated he is by Gipson.  I think that bodes well.  Gipson did well to keep his cool.

Also shows how Withey will be terrible in the NBA.

Foul trouble on the posts greatly contributed to their rebounding/post advantage.  Earlier, people mentioned how 3s don't bode well for offensive rebounding, and past stats bore that out.  But I would think they would actually up the percentage as it contributes to more long rebounds so even if the defense is "in position" some go over their heads.

Bodes well for what? Gipson will never face Withey again.
