Title: Second Job/Side Business
Post by: ben ji on February 08, 2013, 01:01:58 PM
Anyone have a part time second job/business on the side?

I'm not hurting for money, it would be more of something to keep me busy on random nights. I've narrowed it down to a couple of options and would like some goEMAW feedback.

Cashier/Worker at Liquor store(Thinking Rimann's, no hole in the wall place for ben ji)
Pros-
1. I really like craft beers
2. Discounts?
3. Seems like you would see alot of characters

Cons-
1. Would probably have to work weekends, thats a no go.
2. Low pay? $10 an hour for 10 hours a week only works out to around $5,000 a year.
3. Dont know if I would enjoy it

Part Time Lawn Business with brother
Pros-
1. Had a lawn mowing business in high school and enjoyed it, still have most of the equipment
2. Brother works for a nursery and does some lawn mowing/landscaping on the side, could probably just tag along with that.
3. All cash transactions

Cons-
1. Old people telling me I missed a blade
2. Would probably have to work weekends over the summer.
3. Dont want to knock on doors like I did in high school, would probably be kinda creepy now that I cant pull the neighborhood kid line.

Get a job doing something that you already like to do as a hobby...so sounds like you are on the right track.

Used to have a retail job at a specialty shop for great discounts.  I don't work there anymore because 5 days a week is enough rough ridin' work.  I'd rather pay full price.

I delivered pizzas for a second job when I was first getting started. Except for the mileage I put on my truck, it was a great second job.

Liquor store seems like a bummer having to ID kids and shut kids down.  I would not want to do that.

Is there a city beverage place in MHK?  Deliver Kegs, beer.  I had a friend that worked at one in another town and stuff "fell off the truck" all the time.

Also seems like you would be far more likely to get robbed at gunpoint than with other jobs.

i always thought that robbing a bank really isn't that hard if you plan.

getting the money is not the issue, banks will give you what you want because they want you outside their doors.  After that becomes the issue of getting away and not being found.

with careful planning it really wouldn't be that hard.  you will have a several minute head start on the cops.

Better chance of getting away if you create a new identity, get a job as a teller and rob the place blind when you open up in the morning. I've thought about this before

you'd be on video way too much.

you have to do it in a town that you're not from.  that way it doesn't matter if they show a grainy shot of the surveillance camera in the local pud newspaper.

Working the old 6-10 shift on Tuesday Night one of my old teachers comes in, they ask for a recomendo about what kind of beer they should get and then recognize me. We have a 30 minute convo about life and the finer points of hops before they walk out smiling with their 6pack of Bridgeport Triple Red Ale.

Mowing old Mrs Wilson lawn on a beautiful spring morning, I finish up just as the sun is starting to set behind the big Ash Tree out front. I head up to collect my $25 but before I can even ring the doorbell Mrs Wilson is there with a cup of lemonade and the cash. We chat about her grandkids and then she notices I edged her driveway this time. "O wow, that looks nice! Do I owe you anything extra?" "Nope" I respond, "just wanted your lawn to look good when the kids come to visit this weekend". She breaks into a big smile as I walk away.
