my advice is to find out what kind of cut she wants. princess? emerald? oval? then figure out how much you want to spend. then go to some online place that sells diamonds. blue nile, etc. by the diamond from a place like that separate from the band. color is pretty important. don't sacrafice a whole bunch there. her friends will be able to see the color just during casual conversation. sacrafice some on the cut and then clarity if you need. buy a simple band/ring to go w/ it. she can always upgrade this later if she wants something more interesting. maybe would make a nice 5th anniversary gift! good luck.

I lucked out on this. Mrs. Jakesie's grandma had a ring that she wanted Mrs. Jakesie to wear, and Mrs. Jakesie loved it. Probably not as much as myself, who didn't have to spend any money except for on the wedding itself.

I bought my wife's engagement band at Blue Nile, and we found her wedding band locally on clearance.    Saved a ton.

If you do Blue Nile, sign up for Fatwallet Fatcash or Ebates and get several percent rebated back to you.

moshiri in olathe at 119th and black bob is pretty good.  they ask you what you want and then make it for you, pretty reasonably priced.

Don't be fooled by the marketing techniques of Big Diamond.  You should be able to get an adequate one for less than $100.00.

If you're ordering the diamond and ring separately and want diamond inlays in the band, order the band with the inlays set. It's going to come from India where the child labor is superior at setting small stones, and also about one tenth the price of having a goldsmith set them in the store.

You going with gold or white gold for the band?

I know she wants a round stone, solitaire setting, tiffany style. so the worries of getting something she doesn't like is pretty much zero.

my only concern is feeling like I didn't get the best deal possible. but, I'm that way with pretty much everything. will check out blue nile and compare prices.

If you buy from one of the large chain stores you should get the insurance.  It probably won't pay in the long run $'s wise but Mrs. Bf loves going there to have her ring cleaned for free.  They also check if the stones are getting loose and you are covered in case one falls out.

Locally owned jewelry stores will price match online on the stone; stick with GIA stones only.  Then you still get to see it with your own eyes before you're paying for it.  Let them make the money on the band.

Moissanite.

It would be foolish not to buy Moissanite, which is sometimes called a Russian diamond.  It is sparklier than a diamond, and chemically so similar to a diamond that a jewler cannot tell the difference with one of those lens things they put in their eyes.
My wife gets compliments all the time on her ring because of how sparkly it is.

It also costs about 1/2 what a diamond would cost.  I'm not recommending deceiving your fiance though, you should be honest with her.  If you frame the question as "Hey, would you like a Russian diamond that is twice as big for the same price?" she will be fine with it unless she isn't very bright.

Hate to disagree with goE founding father Rick Daris, but I have it on good authority (Canadian friend) that cut is the most important of the four Cs. You want "ideal" or "very ideal" or whatever is the best, and that can hide some of the other stuff if it has too. (Although you shouldn't have to hide anything, :kstategrad:)  I'm not saying color isn't important, but it's the cut that makes the diamond most sparkly. Definitely think the diamond separate/simpler band idea is a strong one, the band is easy to change.

I bought Mrs. WonderMeal's ring from BrilliantEarth.com, which was really easy to use, all GIA certified, and all of their diamonds are conflict free. (Most come from Canada, like my Canadian friend.) She'll appreciate the bling and the fact that she can rest assured knowing that her diamond wasn't mined by someone who had their feet and hands cut off shortly after working a 19 hour day in the mines.  A bunch of my EMAW buddies (I see you, SkinBen) have since used Brilliant Earth on my recommendation, and all have been very happy with it.

Also, this is personal preference, but I think gold or white gold is the way to go. Platinum seems kind of like a fad, and also just looks like silver or steel or something to me. But hey, we're all EMAW fans here, so different strokes for different folks .

there are definitely more brilliant and sparkling diamond cuts.   My wife gets a compliment on hers about every 3 weeks or so from strangers.    A lot of it has to do with lighting, but the diamond can really sparkle if cut right.

You really need to know what setting you want, as some can let you get away with a grade less on the clarity to enhance color or cut.

Question from someone who knows absolutely nothing about engagement/wedding rings.

Is the engagement ring different than the wedding ring? Like do you buy an engagement ring AND a wedding ring? Does the engagement ring turn into the wedding ring?

So confused.

Separate a lot of times, same a lot of times.  Depends on the bride.

A lot of the time the engagement is the large rock and the wedding is a lesser decorative band that they wear right next to each other.  My wife had hers fused together so that they are technically one piece now.

True story, I thought Moissanite was some London East End slang term used in Snatch that was not a real thing.

"A moissanite is an artificial diamond, Lincoln. Its Mickey Mouse, mate. Spurious. Not genuine. And its worth...eff-all."

Ya I think the large rock (or enormous if you're a :kstategrad: ) followed by a tiny, usually matching wedding band is what most people do. And then I think a lot of people get them fused together just because it's easier to keep track of, and then they're not getting all twisted and having to fiddle with them anymore.

If you get a solitaire diamond for the engagement ring, it is very easy to find a wedding band that is shaped to go around the engagement diamond.

The downside is that now she wants the "other side" of the ring.  Too much bling I think looks gaudy and like you're an old whore.

I got engaged on Sats. I was wearing an enormous and weird bird suit. An actual guy related to me through marriage/in-laws (so not really related to me but would be at family reunions if we gave a shazbot! about them) proposed to his girlfriend by putting the ring in a bucket of fried chicken. They were divorced a year and a half later.  There's a great thread about ring shopping/proposal stories on The-Mainboard.com called "Married Men Get itt" or something. Highly entertaining.

Back to rings: I didn't really look anywhere other than the internet. Not sure how reputable bluenile.com is as far as actually adhering to their claim that the diamonds are free of human rights abuses. They might be, they might not. But I know I started looking on brilliantearth.com first and their Conflict-Free Diamonds guarantee seemed more convincing. It also seemed to me like they were kinda taking a jab at bluenile.com without mentioning them by name. http://www.brilliantearth.com/conflict-free-diamonds/  As far as pricing goes, I think Brilliant Earth may be a little bit cheaper than Blue Nile, but the difference is probably pretty nominal.

Place had incredible customer service. Free overnight FedEx from San Fransisco got to New Orleans less than 16 hours later. 30-day free  return/exchange/resize policy with no questions asked, and the packaging when they send it to you includes very specific crap about where and when it was mined (most are from Canada, Russia, or Botswana), how they pay their workers a living wage, etc. Also you can pay in installments if you are a :kugrad: .  Great company. Will definitely use again for my inevitable second marriage.

At every wedding i've ever been to I always make sure the following songs are played to really ignite an awesome party:

GET LOW
HELL YEAH

those two songs ensure a fun time. One wedding I went to they were country folk and told the DJamer absolutely to play no hip hop music at all and I paid him 20$ to play these songs and all these country folk shook their bumpkins and everyone had a great time.

Dancing.  We think we’d like a lot of pop that people know, including some funk, some older soul, 80's, old school hip hop, newish hip hop, some dirty hip hop, some Detroit booty house and more. We envision that later in the night will be the time for bumpin, grittier hip hop.

These are in no particularly order. if you want us to put it in order let me know. We may need your capable skills to pick music for the ‘older generation’ as well as slower songs.

Anyone with a decent understanding of economics and the diamond industry should be able to figure out why buying a "new" diamond from any source, whether or not they claim to be "conflict-free," helps perpetuate the conflict diamond problem.

what ever you do, don't fall for that myth you have to spend 2-3 months salary on an engagement ring

it was started by diamond brokers to line their pockets

before they were around, fathers actually gave the groom loads of goats and cattle to take the bitch off of their hands

cliffs:  tiny ring and tell her pops you want some goats

Post by: SkinnyBenny on January 29, 2013, 10:48:23 PM
Also the 2-3 month salary thing is bullshit because most jewelry stores don't have a safe big enough to accommodate all the cash that 2-3 months of a :kstategrad: would be putting into said safe.

That has to be the most awkward return ever. That both goes for the person returning the ring and the clerk/sales associate taking it back.

My local jeweler was able to match the price of the stone to online stuff.  I could give a crap if the band was even 50% cheaper online sine the stone was waaay more.  Also, bought in MO, had it couriered to KS for small fee to avoid sales tax.

There's also like free bla bla for life but honestly I think most places do that and would do it even if you weren't a customer but wanted you to be a customer.  They incur no additional costs by cleaning her ring or fixing a stone setting.

Also, for me I hate running around town comparing this and that.  So dealing locally and getting the price match saved time.

I think B&M places are probably loses their asses to online, so force them to compete directly.  But, also expect them to make some money.  If you don't take too much of their time though their share can be small.

Don't know what AIG haggles are.

moshiri in olathe is fairly reasonable.  my issue was that she wants a pretty unique ring so none of the online sites had anything like it, so that's why we went to a small local place that does custom work.

1.  It depends on what type of ring you want.  If it's supposed to be something special, you better go to a jewelry store.  They're all about the same.

2.  If the recipient has another ring that you can take, the jewelry store can tell you the size of it.  And if you end up buying a ring that isn't quite the right size, they can resize it or exchange it.

Congratulations, WG. Although I can't imagine why you would marry someone who wears skinny jeans.

so guys, help me out here.

she doesn't like trends, prefers to be "unique", doesn't wear a lot of jewelry, wants something simple, strongly against blood diamonds etc.

i'm thinking vintage/antique.. thoughts/experiences ?

Have her sit down and watch Blood Diamond.  When it's over ask if she still wants one.  You're welcome.

Ditto.

When you buy ask for the child slave free diamond.

Get a Canadian one or a lab produced one. It's better for the ethics.

seems like "blood diamonds" should be worth more than those procured from non blood diamond places

being able to drop a "do you know how. many people died so I could wear this little piece of jewelry?" during conversation would be tight

Contact her mom/grandmothers and see if they have a ring they want to pass down.
