Title: Students - Please be different!
Post by: SkinnyBenny on January 23, 2013, 11:25:15 AM
While last night was electric and full of cathardic energy, one thing was VERY disturbing.  The F--- KU chant throughout the night caught me off guard.  Granted, I am 50 years old.  But that was simply something that I never thought I would see.

We used to use my in-laws tickets to go to KU games (as they are close to where we live).  At one point we simply could not go any longer when the students started chanting foul language before every kick off.  I took great solice in understanding that, although students are always on the edge with enthusiasm, K State's students would never go that far.

I completely understand the enthusiasm.  I get the generation thing.  But, for what its worth, my wife had to leave the collisium before the end of the game because of the language, and I followed soon after.

I sincerely hope that this was an isolated thing.  I hope our young people can find better ways to support our colors.

Agree? Howabout STOMP KU  STOMP KU instead next time.

If I remember correctly, Currie sent out an email to all of the students about "being classy" a year or two ago. Perhaps that idea simply needs to be refreshed in the student's minds. I assume that email was sent from Currie because alumni sent him angry emails. While its pretty :cyclist: to send Currie an email, I think it might be the best way to change the way things are.

I'd be more worried about a child learning a new word than anything else. Foul languaged children are no longer adorable. Adorable children participate in little cat slam jam. The students love little cat slam jam.

Insto facto: If the students don't stop cussing, little cat slam jam shall cease to exist. NO ONE WANTS THAT!

I agree that it makes our fanbase look bad. I remember that I used to love the Michael Jordan space jam song where everyone would stand up and pump their fists saying, "K-S-U Wildcats". Well, then students last year had to say "Mother Fuc*in" in between "K-S-U" and "Wildcats". Now we don't even do that chant anymore and it saddens me. eff is just a word.

If you, or your wife or anybody else chooses to give that word, or ANY word enough power to make you leave an area to avoid hearing it, you have the problem, not the one saying a WORD.

I love this part of these posts. I can just imagine some fat 50 year old in the lobby crying hysterically cause she was forced to hear "eff" 5 or 6 times. And then her dimwit husband with his arm around her, "It'll be ok hunny, we'll go to church tomorrow to make up for it"

Not using words that offend some people en masse with television cameras looking on, is polite. I don't say "eff" out loud when there are children or older people around, because I don't want to offend. For the same reason, I no longer use the word "Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!)." Why offend someone for no reason? Just to be edgy?

The English language is full of so many wonderful words and phrases. Why resort to using ones that are offensive? (Yep, I'm tucking in my shirt.)

The sock gets why the chant was rough ridin' stupid, it was just way too "try too hard."  How in the eff could you be a college student and think swearing is so edgy and cool? I just did it twice, seamlessly. You people really are Spradling loving, mayo eating, uncultured hicky rubes.  This is what happens when 80% of your student section spent every summer from 7-18 being sent to vacation bible school in the Gyp Hills.

Organized swearing doesn't have to be stupid, it is possible to fail at it horribly.  When I think of moronic swearing, I think of K-State, KU, and Wisconsin's "eat crap/eff you." Three fan bases full of hickY rubes. Maybe this should be added to the white midwestern thread.

Its like the Ty Ler Lock Ett clap clap clapclapclap

but instead of chanting the syllables of someones name you just say eff eff eff eff clap clap clapclapclap.

This is going to be really big with the kids by the start of next football season.

Not using words that offend some people en masse with television cameras looking on, is polite. I don't say "eff" out loud when there are children or older people around, because I don't want to offend. For the same reason, I no longer use the word "respect." Why offend someone for no reason? Just to be edgy?

The English language is full of so many wonderful words and phrases. Why resort to using ones that are offensive? (Yep, I'm tucking in my shirt.)

Thats the point, why is it offensive?? Don't let words bother you

The entire and only point of using the word in that context is to offend.  It wasn't chosen randomly from a list of verbs.  You can't substitute in "Hug KU" and communicate the same intent.

Words don't offend me personally, and when I'm around my friends (Jewish, gay, Chinese, Mexican, white) we find nothing funnier than insulting each other with slurs.  But we knock it off when others are around because not everyone shares our sense of humor.  So, one reason to not say "eff KU" is that you know there will be folks around who get offended and it's respectful to not offend folks for no real reason.  (Yes I have the language filter on at work.)

The second reason is that it's not clever.  Not at all.  Frankly anyone who doesn't buy into the "respectful" argument should at least want to come up with something clever.  Also, a clever chant might not be offensive.  Or it might.  But at least it wouldn't be insipidly stupid.

But at least it wouldn't be insipidly stupid.

yeah. the generic unoriginality of it is the only thing that bothers me.

But, for what its worth, my wife had to leave the collisium before the end of the game because of the language, and I followed soon after.

Congrats on having this discussion. I agree the foul language isn't necessary. Plus fans can get inside an opponents head other ways. Stanford fans are famous for this.

Just to be edgy

The sock gets why the chant was rough ridin' stupid, it was just way too "try too hard."  How in the eff could you be a college student and think swearing is so edgy and cool? I just did it twice, seamlessly. You people really are Spradling loving, mayo eating, uncultured hicky rubes.  This is what happens when 80% of your student section spent every summer from 7-18 being sent to vacation bible school in the Gyp Hills.

I wasn't a fan of the students, in the front row they were retards and couldn't think of anything to yell but, "You refs suck!" "You're crappy!"  What happened to the days of "dead beat daddy" or "Brady's Drunk"?  I mean come on students, they played a guy that looked like beetle juice, guys with premature balding, Withey, you don't even have to be creative to make fun of him,  and don't forget I mean, it's Kevin Young!

So yeah, the students should be more offensive, if anything. less eff ku, more fetal alcohol syndrome references(Elijah).

Is dumbass purple blazer guy still sitting in the front? That is probably the issue.

To be fair, this may be the most boring collection of kansas basketball players we've ever seen.

I mean J.R. Giddens?  Rush?  Morris twins?  Sherron?  Sasha, Moody and Luke Axtel were goofy.

No one on the 2013 KU Jayhawks comes even close to that.

No shock value among those guys at all. None. Makes me yearn for the days the b-ballers fought the f-ballers on the campus.

Ya, sections 18 - 21 are ICat student tickets and 22-26 are GA student tickets. If the students that hold GA passes don't go to the game then there isn't crap we can do about it. Thanks for proving my point with an image though.
