Title: KU vs. K-State Academics
Post by: Lucas Scoopsalot on December 28, 2012, 09:25:12 PM
Ok, so my first year of college I went to a community college where I took Trig and Calculus 1. They transferred to K-State respectively as those classes. I have a friend that goes to that same community college(a KU fan), but is transferring to KU next year. He get's really really offended for some reason when I talk about how hard Calc 2 or any other math class is at K-State. I really don't understand why he gets so butthurt. Anyway, he said that he is taking Trig and Calc 1 at the same community college. He told me that in order to get credit for Calc 1 at KU he had to take Calc 1 and 2 at the community college. That was confusing to me since mine transferred straight up pretty much. Well, he went on to say, "Since I have to take Calc 1 and 2 for it to transfer just as Calc 1 it means that the Math is just 5x harder at KU." I responded, "They better not be, because you will fail miserably."

He spent the weekend in Manhattan with me when KU came to get their asses kicked in football. The whole weekend the kid was passively talking crap on the K-State campus and just shoving in negative comments whenever he could about the things he saw on the campus. He said the K-State campus is far inferior to that of the KU campus and KU academics blows K-State's out of the water. He didn't even get to see the K-State campus in it's full before making these wild assumptions. I don't even argue with him about KU vs. K-State stuff, but it's just getting out of hand. Ever since he decided he is going to KU he has nothing good to say about K-State.

Can someone help me out with finding some stats for comparing the Universities? I want to be able to point out where each of the Universities are better than the other. There is no possible way that KU is that much harder or better in the Math department than K-State.

I've driven around the KU campus before and I really wasn't THAT impressed. I mean, it was nice, but this kid makes it out to be heaven.

He also talks about how awesome the city of Lawerence is and how "cool" Mass street is. Whatever the hell that is. He also thinks that Manhattan is confusing as hell and he thinks that Lawerence actually feels like a smaller town and is less crowded. I mean what the eff? This is exact opposite of what I've been told my whole life.

Don't worry about it Lucas I worked in Lawrence for 2 years and was not impressed.  The people there are nice and are totally committed to boosting their towns reputation.  It's kind of a turn off IMO.  Hey Lawrence your pretty cool but tone it down you are messing up my swag.

Be happy that your bud is happy about his choice of school. Then remind him that he is being a Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) ass.

At KSU calc 1, 2, 3, and DiffEq are all 4 hours each (totaling 16). It is common at most universities that these 4 classes total 16 hours. Some schools do it in 5-5-3-3 to get to 16. KU is a little different once you get past calc 2, but both calc 1 & 2 are 5 hours. That is why they would probably require 1 & 2 to transfer in as just 1. It's not that it's "harder", they just organize the the classes different. They cover more in 1 & 2 than KSU, but cover less in the next 2 semesters in finishing the calc string. At the end of 4 semesters you've covered the exact same content with the same difficulty.

Fort Hays uses the 5-5-3-3 system has has the same transfer issues. One system isn't harder/easier, it just makes it difficult to try to match classes up when they use different systems to get the same end result.

might be wrong, but i'm fairly sure calc 1 used to be 5 hours at ksu too (talking like 2000).  i'm taking it this coming semester and i keep thinking it's 5 hours, makes me very  when i remember it's only 4.

QFT.  I took calc 1 in '99 or '00 and I could swear it was 5 hours.  Maybe not though, it was a long time ago.

Math and algebra? I did without it. Took one semester of algebra in high school, then shrugged math off until I had to take a KSU class that basically taught me how to balance a checkbook to satisfy my math requirement.

Now, I own my own business, make a lot of money, and can stay up late at night drinking Scotch and posting here. Why would I need anything else besides Mrs. Bones, KSU, this site, and all the KSU games?

Took AP Calc in high school and got a 5 on the exam... First semester of college in fall of '06, took Calc 3 and got an A. Bam, 4 hours of A for calc 1 through AP, 4 hours of A in calc 2 for back credit for getting an A in calc 3. Also, didn't have to take the only hard calc class

Meh.  Calc doesn't seem to me to be genius thing, more a study thing and there's no such thing as study brag.  Also, I'm not good with math above the trig level.  I am amazing at other studies but my math skills have always been better than average, at best.

The real brag was scamming my way out of the one really hard calc class.  Also was a very pak'd brag.

Pro tip, if your buddy from a community college is bragging about Mass Street and ku's academics, you have already won.  Enjoy kicking his ass.
