Who had the most smokers?

Did you see that cool urinal?

Best food you thought you'd hate but liked?

Worst food you thought you'd like but hated?

Coolest thing you thought would be uncool but was?

Uncoolest thing you thought would be cool but was not?

Did you ever go in the countryside and find old french rifles that were dropped during wwII?

Did you ask for Freedom Fries?

Who had the most smokers? 100% of parisians smoke. pretty cool. felt like a loser not smoking.  :frown:

Did you see that cool urinal? not that one but at claridges in london the urinals were the tall ones that go from like chest high to the floor and they had, like, pee guards over your feet. sort of a reverse salad bar sneeze guard. wanted to take a pic but the bathroom attendant was staring me down.

Best food you thought you'd hate but liked? those steak and ale pies sound gross but are good.

Worst food you thought you'd like but hated? some cheese in paris smells like worse than the worst thing you've ever smelled. barf city.  :barf:

Coolest thing you thought would be uncool but was? tower of london, those beefeater guys are a riot.  :D

Uncoolest thing you thought would be cool but was not? the louvre. I mean, the mona lisa, etc. is a huge snooze fest. also apparently the "r" is silent or something?

full plane and airport lounge reports please.

I think I like Lufthansa business class better than AA first class. Both pretty great though. I put on AA pajamas for the flight from DFW to London :D AA DFW termy D lounge was great. they put the cats basketball game on one of the tvs in the bar and on the sound. took a shower at the AA arrivals lounge at Heathrow. day would have sucked ass without that place. like, at customs my bag was waiting for me when I got off the plane because we were flying in first and we got to go through the customs line with zero people and then get to use the arrivals lounge and get coffee and breakfast and take a shower and stuff. would have felt like garbage until we could check in at 3PM without it. Lufthansa lounge in CDG and Frankfurt were kind of meh because we were just in business class. free snacks and booze and whatever but kind of packed with people.

beer

UK "real ales" or whatever they always talk about are garbage. tried about 10 of them. all gross. very bland and all kind of taste like a beer that has been poured about 4 hours ago and just kept cold'ish. Even the IPAs were flavorless pieces of crap. Only good beers were Meantime beers http://www.meantimebrewing.com/ which I'm a fan of.

Paris had elite beers everywhere because they just serve all belgians. Had quite a few winter seasonal belgian strong darks that I really liked.

Good call drinking the Belgians in Paris.  When I have been in Europe, I always like to try the local beers.  This worked out ok in Croatia/Greece/Italy.  In France, they were the most god awful crap I've ever had.

Did you see any punk rocker London kids? nope, kinda disappointing

Did you risk the "non-black cab" cabs?  :ohno: yep.  guy kept talking on his phone while driving us around and the people he talked to all had hilariously british names (iphone was in a dash holder so we could read their names). One was Big Robert and one was Minty.

Also:

Best American food that you had? porterhouse at Hawksmoor (http://thehawksmoor.com/locations/seven-dials) . the waitress asked if we would like her to describe the specials and the menu and we said yeah and she went in explaining the different cuts of steak and I was all "lmao, I went to kstate, gtfoomf with this explaining what the difference between a porterhouse and a t-bone is (not really, I just sat there politely while she told me but that's what I basically said to her with my eyes prolly)"

Worst American food that you had? ehh, probably an omelet (is that american? seems like it is). they don't cook their bacon properly.

How did you get to France?  If chunnell, did it feel claustrophobic? eurostar train throught he chunnel. didn't seem closterphobic at all. only really under it for about 15 minutes. train goes really freakishly fast. makes me want to ride one of those asian ones that go way faster.

Did you use the subway/metro systems in the places you went? How were they (ease of use, convenience of station locations)?

yeah, used them in both. both very easy. some of the ones in Paris are basically commuter trains while others feel like a normal subway/metro. the only ones that were a pain in the ass that we used was the picaddily line in London. you had to go up/down an elevator instead of stairs/escelator to get to it at some stations so it sucked to wait for one and then pile in like sardines. got a couple oyster cards in london and you just flash them in front of the machine to get on. worked on the tube and busses. in paris we got books of tickets and you had to run them at the beginning and sometimes the end of the usage and onetime mrs. dave trashed hers after getting on and I laughed at her for being an ignorant stupid american. never used the bus in paris.

also, did you ever come across one of those gyro-type pizzas? i don't remember exactly what they're called, but i've seen them in every country i've been to, they are there, and delicious.

here's one:

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-ash3%2F5891_668533910691_2941070_n.jpg&hash=fc7c4aa79a3d34e3c5ae222c9cde92e179491d4f)

those are amazing, it's basically crust, gyro meat, a special thousand island type dressing and then whatever else you want. It seems like every pizza joint in Sweden is owned by middle eastern types that sell these

yeah now that you mention it maybe it was just Sweden, although I thought i remember it in Amsterdam & Berlin as well. could be wrong. effing delicious though.

sorry for semi-hijacking the thread SD. carry on.

Where did you get the omelet?  I thought the UK bacon was much better than ours

full plane and airport lounge reports please.

AA pajamas huh? that's great. i have a bunch of AA lounge passes that are going to expire before i even get to use them. if anybody want some let me know.

Did anyone try to scam you while you were in Paris? What scams were they running?
I must've had "sucker" tattooed across my forehead when I was there, because practically every two steps in public places someone tried to scam me. People tried to "help" me with the metro and then ask for money, even though I knew how to use the metro and people did this scam with fake gold rings.

no, didn't experience any of that personally. did see one of those shell game things where the guy has the three cups or whatever and one has the thing under one and is moving them all around and his (obvious) bud was acting like he just walked up and started betting 50 euros at a time and winning a couple times and then losing on an easy one while people looked on. was pretty lol. saw another guy get busted in the face by someone on the street and three cops with machine gun looking guns (no idea what qualifies as a machine gun) had the guy who got decked up against a fence and I guess he tried to rob the other guy or whatever.

went by the Centre Pompidou but didn't go in. crazy looking place. Went to Montmartre and walked around. lots of street vendor type stuff there and a ton of asian tour groups of roughly 100 people following around another asian guy walking with a sign on a stick he is holding in the air. walked down rue di rivoli a few times, lot of elite hotels on it and right off it and rich person shops. used the metro a lot. pretty easy to navigate but they don't have a lot of rail (compared to London or NYC or other large cities) so you are walking a ton even if you take advantage of it whenever possible. our hotel was right by a station for the primary east/west line so that was pretty great.

the churches are all free, so hit those when you run into them until you get bored.  def. go to st peters even if you have to stand in line (but try not to stand in line too long).  go to the top of it while you're there.  there is a small 3rd or 4th century church in the suburbs that i went to once that was cool.  i can find the name and location if you're interested.  the pantheon is an incredible building.  you can sneak into the colesseum at night and have it to yourself, so do that.  the forum is right there, so you'll probably want to hit it, even though it's kinda overrated (cool stuff, but too crowded to enjoy).  the baths of some emperor were pretty cool if you're down in that part of town.  i liked walking along the via appia in the area outside the walls where there's a bunch of aqueduct arches.

a lot of times, you can just kinda wander around seeing stuff and it's mostly all old.  went somewhere once that was like a museum and behind it was a garden with old marble sculptures and domestic rabbits hopping around the garden.  didn't go in the museum, but the garden was enjoyable.  hopped a wall and walked around a monastery or something with fruit trees and stray cats.  also nice.  just stuff like that is fun.  don't go when it's hot.

try to avoid the bad pizza and to eat a shitload of the good.

The ladies in Rome are unbelievable.

If anyone is going to Italy any time soon I suggest you plan a few days in Positano. About 1.5hrs south of Naples on a crazy ass cliff road leads you to probably the coolest town there is.  Google some pics and be sure you spend both nights at Music on the Rocks.  The only bar/club in the surrounding cities is right down by the water.  Doesnt open till late but has all the locals and some crazy house techno stuff.

Partied with a guy that was looking for a place to "summer his yacht" when we were there.  :kstategrad:

Thanks.  The colosseum at night sounds amazing. I get really annoyed and angry in big crowds of people so any time I can avoid them I will.  Just peacefully walking around in ancient gardens with rabbits hopping around sounds like heaven.

Also can you tell just by looking what pizza is good and what pizza is bad?

Ok - well I'll just hit the highlights.

* One night I had dinner at a Jason's Deli by my hotel. This very fat person wen't up the counter and asked for a large empty soup cup. She proceeded to walk over to the soft serve yogurt thingy and completely fill it and then walked out. i was all  :surprised:

* The evening before I went to dinner and when I parked my rental car the rough ridin' keys wouldn't come out of the ignition. It wouldn't start either so I couldn't just drive back to the hotel and say eff it. I was furious. I called the Rental Agency and started bitching to the poor guy on the phone. THEN - I look down and realized I didn't put the car in park  :blindfold:. Crisis averted. This happens to me a lot with cars that I am not familiar with.

* On the flight home last night I got a free beer from the flight attendant since I thought I had drink tickets left. She was all 'dont worry about it'  :gocho:

Thanks everyone for reading my stories.

missed this post. no, I did not. clams set up his elgato tv thing for me to watch on my phone but I didn't because it didn't start until 2AM Paris time.  :frown:
stevedave, i was in paris during the cats game and watched it on my laptop...man i would have enjoyed some company. i was searching the streets for fellow EMAWs, but of course the parisians were too busy smoking their mommies (as the brits like to call it) and eating mushy omelettes.

If I had known this I would have invited you to do something Parisian with us!

can you tell just by looking what pizza is good and what pizza is bad?

a lot of times, yes.  but you will be tempted by the bad.  so, there are two types of pizza sellers.  the ones where you go in and sit down and eat your own individual round pizza with a carafe of wine and the ones where you stand up and order your pizza by the gram (actually the 100 gram increment) and then either stand there eating the pizza or you walk away eating your pizza.

with the second kind, it's usually pretty easy to tell.  if it's a normal eating time, and there aren't a lot of people waiting to buy pizza, it probably isn't very good.  they should definitely be bringing fresh pizzas out constantly to cut and sell.  not standing by a couple of cold pizzas that they'll heat up for you.  and they should either be selling mostly red pizza or mostly white (or mostly both).  but not mostly pizzas with toppings.  that's not to say you can't get good pizza with lots of toppings at somewhere where no one else is buying, but it's risky.  it's kinda hard to find one of these places that's good.  there's like one good one in every neighborhood that everyone eats at and maybe 9 that may or may not be good, but that don't have crowds of people at them, so it's chancy.  if it's not a tourist area, then there is just the one good one.

it's harder with the sit down pizza sellers.  follow a guide book, or an internet recommendo, or try to get a look at some of the pizzas before you enter and sit down.  if you see a ton of people there it's probably good, unless it's in a heavy traffic area.  it probably won't be open for lunch if it's good.  if they sell a bunch of other food besides pizza, that's riskier too.
