2012 Big 12 Champs
2012 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award® - Collin Klein
Title: Re: Cats Trophy count master thread

Quote

Kansas State University’s Collin Klein has been named recipient of t he 2012 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.  The award is presented annually to a top college football quarterback who best combines on-the-field and academic achievement.  Candidates for the award must be completing their college eligibility or be a fourth-year junior, on schedule to graduate with his class.

“Collin is not just a tremendous athlete and leader on the field, but an MVP off the field as well, who repeatedly has been recognized for his numerous contributions to the community and to the spirit of sportsmanship,” said John C. Unitas, Jr., President of The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, which along with Transamerica presents the award.

Klein threw for 2,490 yards, rushed for 890 yards and scored 37 touchdowns while leading the Wildcats to an 11-1 record and 5th place in the BCS standings.  The team will play No. 4 Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl on January 3.

Klein was one of 29 candidates for the Golden Arm Award when the season began.  Other finalists for the 2012 award were Matt Barkley of USC, EJ Manuel of Florida State, AJ McCarron of Alabama, and Geno Smith of West Virginia.

Past winners of the Golden Arm Award include current NFL starting quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning, Carson Palmer, Brady Quinn and Matt Ryan.  Last year’s winner was Andrew Luck of Stanford, now the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts.

Klein and his coach, LHC Bill Snyder, will be in Baltimore on Friday, December 7, for the 6 p.m. presentation of the award at the Royal Sonesta Harbor Court Hotel.

Bovada had him @ +700 last night

I think he's got a decent shot...like I said in he 'what does CK have to do' thread...I think a lot of voters were waiting until the last minute to see if there was a Sr. QB they could vote for so they didn't have to vote for a frosh or a LB.

A point someone made on the other board and on the DP show, a number of voters may not even put Teo (being a D guy) and Johnny Fake ID(freshman) on there ballots but far less are likely to keep Klein off.

They vary how many guys they take based upon how close the voting is.  They always take at least three, but they will only invite four or five if it's reasonably close.  If only three players are invited, that means fourth and fifth finished very far behind the top three.

I know, but it seems like they've been taking a lot more lately.  Also, I figured with a Freshman and Defensive player up there, it would open up a possibility of a wider field.

I don't like that only three players were invited because it's an indication that Manziel likely ran away with the vote.  I was somewhat surprised that it was enough of a run away vote for only three players to be invited because this year's Heisman field is the most wide-open I've ever seen, but it's looking like one quarter vs Alabama and a bunch of TDs against trash teams will be enough for Johnny Football to win it.

No KR/PR for the team that led the nation in both categories is my biggest complaint. Granted, Austin and Gilbert were also really good, but Lockett averaged 33 yards per kick return and had 2 scores.

Nigel Malone?

He obviously didn't get credit for some teams completely ignoring his half of the field.  Can't expect the media to know everything I guess :dunno:

This was the coaches vote.

I'll be honest, I have no idea which offensive linemen are good and which aren't. I just bitch about the entire line if we are getting killed and compliment them all if we are dominating.

Also, don't know who watches the games to know which guards and tackles are better than others. I guess Lucas was that good, but can't say for certain

I played offensive line in high school and at an NAIA school before my knees were too injured to keep playing, so I have a high OLIQ.  Finney and Whitehair are both very good linemen who have lengthy NFL careers ahead of them if they stay healthy.  Surprised Lucas got first team honors.  He isn't bad, but our tackles just aren't as good as our guards and center.  Then again, haven't watched enough of the other teams to know who should/shouldn't be on the first team so there's that.

Lucas is the most likely NFL guy simply because he's an athletic 6-9 324. Probably contributed to him being first team. I don't know if Finney or Whitehair make it because they are "only" 6-3/6-4, but they'll likely get a shot.

Of the 3 Finney was by far the most consistent and is the brains of the offensive line. I thought both Lucas and Whitehair had plenty of moments where they got beat or didn't finish blocks. And of the 3 Lucas is the least physical, but again, you can't teach his size/athleticism and he'll get attention because of it.

I get why NFL types would drool over Lucas, the guy is built like a monster.  But he plays soft, at least for how big he is.  If his physicality matched his size he would be an All-American.  He's also been beat on the pass rush quite a few times when he stops moving his feet, allowing the DE to run right by him.  I have high expectations for him next season.

I agree with all those critiques and he was frustrating to watch because of that. He can/should dominate at this level if he wants to. If he moves his feet and gets his hands on a defensive player, there are very few that can defeat a block, he just plays inconsistent and soft at times.

Big 12 and SEC individual honors

COACHES OF THE YEAR
•  Big 12: LHC Bill Snyder, Kansas State
•  SEC: Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M
The Wildcats figured to be good, but not Big 12 champion and 11-1 good. Snyder won his second conference title and heads to the Fiesta Bowl. Sumlin had won at Houston, but how would he do with a new job, conference and quarterback? Like this: 10-2 overall, 6-2 in the SEC and Johnny Manziel is the Heisman favorite as a redshirt freshman.

OFFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE YEAR
•  Big 12: Collin Klein, QB, Kansas State
•  SEC: Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
As you might imagine the choice of quarterback was the most difficult. Manziel accounted for 43 touchdowns, passing and rushing, Klein 37. Manziel’s effort in leading the Aggies’ to the upset victory at undefeated Alabama stands as one of the season’s most memorable performances, a true Heisman moment. But Klein was remarkably consistent in guiding the Wildcats. If their teams met, the guess here is Manziel would finish with the better numbers, and Klein would find a way to lead his team to the victory.

DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE YEAR
•  Big 12: Arthur Brown, LB, Kansas State
•  SEC: Jarvis Jones, LB, Georgia
The quiet leader of Kansas State’s defense, Brown always seems to be in the right place at the right time. He was the first to pick off a Geno Smith pass, just as he was the first to pick off RG3 last year. Jones is a big hitter with a big body, at 6-3, 220. He’s aggressive, disruptive and has great closing speed for a Bulldogs team that won the Eastern Division.

You've got free agency to go get two other players at that point. If I'm an NFL GM, I make getting this guy a priority to secure an extra roster spot.

No. He's still just a kicker/punter. I wouldn't draft him until the last round. The roster spot isn't that valuable.

Alex Henry was a really good K & P @ NUB but the Eagles only have him Kicking in the NFL...I'm not sure why this is, you would think it would make sense more from only having 45 roster spots on Sundays than the salary angle

I think the says something about "play worthy of Concensus All-American".  He still has a shot at the being a concensus all-american, but that's not likely.  Also, that "worthy" part creates a loop-hole.  I have a hard time believing that Collin won't get that honor someday, whatever that honor is after they take down the Ring of Honor names to put up a ribbon board.

Also, lol at the GPC meltdown over this.  Johnny Football has been leading the Heisman race for 3 weeks, but they all just know realized that meant Collin wasn't going to win the awards on ESPN or be an AA.

So, like, Bishop is far and away the most dynamic player in college football.  But who do they give it to?  Ricky - a traditional power player, lifetime achievement award

So, like, Beasley is far and away the most dynamic player in college basketball.  But who do they give it to?  Tyler - a try hard white kid senior who has all the intangibles you could want and hustles and stuff.

So, like, finally we get the try hard white kid senior who's capping off a great career/lifetime achievement and he hustles and stuff and has all the intangibles and who the eff do they give this crap to?  Basically, Bishop/Beasley.

I'm right there with you. I felt like I just wasted 2 hours of my time watching ESPN. They basically waste Collin's time, his family, the school and the fans time by inviting them to Orlando to "be a part" of the college football awards. All they do is make a mockery of K-State and make fun of the program and players basically by doing it...

WIBW radio's blurb about it this morning said Collin was "shut out" at that ESPN awards thing.

We went out to eat sushi.  They had ESPN on the TV behind the bar.  I looked up at it once and saw Tom Rinaldi talking and thought to myself "Even if Collin was going to win every award tonight, I still wouldn't watch this crap."

ESPN haters watch ESPN way more than most.

Only when at gym, no volume or when a game is on.

Exactly.  Sports Center is my go to treadmill silent screen thing for my warm ups.  Only program on my gym's system that you can not get in to and be worried about not getting to finish watching at the end of my few minute treadmill warmup.

Unavoidable for the sports fan, then again I'm not an ESPN hater.  They do some things great, they do somethings horribly awful.  Comes with the territory of having such a large organization.

the problem isn't losing the awards themselves...the problem is when you see us lose the award, you think, "well, we don't deserve it after the baylor loss," and then it's like losing the baylor game all over again.

My anger over Klein losing the Davey O'Brien hasn't gotten any better 24 hours later.  Complete travesty, no chance the voters looked at or even cared about the voting criteria of the award.

Approximately zero chance, unless they do that thing where they use different athletes for different consoles

Depends on your interpretation of the criteria "whether a person has achieved performance that warrants consensus All-America level status".  If you think "has achieved performance that warrants" is a fancy way of saying "is", then no.

If you think it is purposely worded vaguely to allow for "they weren't a consensus All-American, but they subjectively played well enough to warrant it" to allow for cases like this season to get Klein up there, then I guess they have a shot.

I'm in the camp that  :bill: probably wrote the criteria, so the only interpretation of the criteria that matters depends on how  :bill: is feeling in 5 years.
